Probing single-chain conformation and its impact on the optoelectronic properties of donor–accepter conjugated polymers

The chain conformation of donor–acceptor conjugated polymers (D–A CPs) is critical to their optical and electronic properties. However, probing the conformation of D–A CPs (e.g., persistence length and contour length) at a single-chain level is challenging due to the formation of aggregates in dilute solution, even in a good solvent. In this work, we studied the chain conformation and corresponding optical spectra for high-performance D–A CPs in the single-chain state by multimodal variable-temperature scattering and spectroscopy techniques, as well as by molecular dynamics simulations. Here we found a critical role of the side-chain length and branch point in the persistence length and optical absorption due to steric effects. Hence, it is important to consider both the chain rigidity and coplanarity of the polymer backbone to achieve desirable optoelectronic properties. Our findings bridge the fundamental knowledge gaps to design new CPs with desired optoelectronic properties via molecular engineering for next-generation electronic devices.

Approaching disorder-tolerant semiconducting polymers

Doping has been widely used to control the charge carrier concentration in organic semiconductors. However, in conjugated polymers, n-doping is often limited by the tradeoff between doping efficiency and charge carrier mobilities, since dopants often randomly distribute within polymers, leading to significant structural and energetic disorder. Here, we screen a large number of polymer building block combinations and explore the possibility of designing n-type conjugated polymers with good tolerance to dopant-induced disorder. We show that a carefully designed conjugated polymer with a single dominant planar backbone conformation, high torsional barrier at each dihedral angle, and zigzag backbone curvature is highly dopable and can tolerate dopant-induced disorder. With these features, the designed diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based polymer can be efficiently n-doped and exhibit high n-type electrical conductivities over 120 S cm -1 , much higher than the reference polymers with similar chemical structures. This work provides a polymer design concept for highly dopable and highly conductive polymeric semiconductors.

Engineering donor–acceptor conjugated polymers for high-performance and fast-response organic electrochemical transistors

To date, high-performance organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have mostly been based on polythiophene systems. Donor–acceptor (D–A) conjugated polymers are expected to be promising materials for OECTs owing to their high mobility and comparatively low crystallinity (good for ion diffusion). However, the OECT performance of D–A polymers lags far behind that of the polythiophenes. Here we synergistically engineered the backbone and side chain of a series of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based D–A polymers and found that redox potential, molecular weight, solution processability, and film microstructures all have a severe impact on their performance. After systematic engineering, P(bgDPP-MeOT2) exhibited the best figure-of-merit (μC*) of 225 F cm -1 V -1 s -1 , amongst the highest performance of the reported D–A polymers. Besides, the DPP polymers exhibited high hole mobility of over 1.6 cm 2 V -1 s -1 , leading to fast response OECTs with a record low turn-off response time of 30 μs. The polymer also exhibited good operation stability with a current retention of 98.8% over 700 electrochemical switching cycles. This work reveals the complexity and systematicness in the development of D–A polymer based high-performance OECTs.
