Two-dimensional potential double layers and discrete auroras

This paper is concerned with the formation of the acceleration region for electrons which produce the visible auroral arc and with the formation of the inverted V precipitation region. The former is embedded in the latter, and both are associated with field-aligned current sheets carried by plasma sheet electrons. It is shown that an electron current sheet driven from the plasma sheet into the ionosphere leads to the formation of a two-dimensional potential double layer. For a current sheet of a thickness less than the proton gyrodiameter solutions are obtained in which the field-aligned potential drop is distributed over a length much greater than the Debye length. For a current sheet of a thickness much greater than the proton gyrodiameter solutions are obtained in which the potential drop is confined to a distance on the order of the Debye length. The electric field in the two-dimensional double-layer model is the zeroth-order field inherent to the current sheet configuration, in contrast to those models in which the electric field is attributed to the first-order field due to current instabilities or turbulences. The maximum potential in the two-dimensional double-layer models is on the order of the thermal energy of plasma sheet protons, which ranges from 1 to 10 keV.

A theory of the terrestrial kilometric radiation

During magnetospheric substorms, electrons with energies of about 1 keV are injected from the plasma-sheet region into the auroral region. A fraction of these energetic electrons can precipitate into the upper atmosphere, and the rest are reflected because of the mirror effect of the convergent geomagnetic field. It is found that these reflected electrons can result in the amplification of electromagnetic waves via a relativistic normal cyclotron resonance. This process may explain the recently discovered terrestrial kilometric radiation.

Induced emission of extraordinary mode radiation in tokamaks

The implications of the formation of a positive slope in the runaway electron tail in tokamak plasmas are investigated in regard to the radiation in the vicinity of the electron plasma frequency. In particular, it is shown that the amplification of extraordinary mode waves may result.

Lyman-alpha and Balmer-series fluorescence from hydrogen photofragments of H2O vapor

Production cross sections associated with the atomic hydrogen Lyman-alpha and Balmer-series (3-9 to 2) fluorescence observed in H2O photodissociation are measured, and maximum fluorescence production cross sections for the two series are reported. Repulsive potential energy curves corresponding to the respective pseudodiatomic OH-H(n) molecule are constructed according to the Franck-Condon principle, and the efficiencies for converting H(2S) to H(2P) by H2 collisions and by H2O collisions are estimated. The data are considered with reference to cometary photochemistry.

Atomic carbon emission from photodissociation of CO2

Atomic carbon fluorescence, C I 1561, 1657, and 1931 A, has been observed from photodissociation of CO2, and the production cross sections have been measured. A line emission source provided the primary photons at wavelengths from threshold to 420 A. The present results suggest that the excited carbon atoms are produced by total dissociation of CO2 into three atoms. The cross sections for producing the O I 1304-A fluorescence through photodissociation of CO2 are found to be less than 0.01 Mb in the wavelength region from 420 to 835 A. The present data have implications with respect to photochemical processes in the atmospheres of Mars and Venus.

Spontaneous synchrotron emission from a plasma with an energetic runaway electron tail

The emissivity of spontaneous synchrotron radiation is computed for a plasma consisting of a background thermal plasma in addition to an energetic runaway electron component. The analysis is performed for both the ordinary and extraordinary modes, for frequencies in the vicinity of the electron plasma frequency and the higher harmonics of the electron gyrofrequency, and for the case when the electron plasma frequency is approximately the same as or smaller than the cyclotron frequency. The relativistic gyroresonance with the runaway electrons is found to result in a level of spontaneous emission which, for frequencies in the neighborhood of the electron plasma frequency, is significantly enhanced over the thermal radiation.

Spontaneous emission near the electron plasma frequency in a plasma with a runaway electron tail

Spontaneous emission of radiation with frequencies near the electron plasma frequency is studied for a plasma which consists of both thermal and runaway electrons. It is found that a substantial enhancement of the spontaneous radiation intensity can occur in this frequency regime via a Cherenkov resonance with the runaway electrons. Numerical analysis indicates that, for reasonable estimates of densities and energies, the plasma-frequency radiation can attain levels greater than the peak thermal emission at the second gyroharmonic.

Theory of thin-screen scintillations for a spherical wave

A thin-screen scintillation theory for a spherical wave is presented under the 'quasi-optical' approximation. The 'scattering angle', the 'observed angle', the intensity correlation function, and the temporal pulse broadening are calculated for the random wave. It is found that as the wave propagates outward away from the phase screen, the correlation scale of the intensity fluctuation increases linearly while the 'observed angle' decreases linearly. The calculations are carried out for both Gaussian and power-law spectra of the turbulent medium. The results are applied to an analysis of the scattering data for the Crab Nebula's radiation.

Small scale turbulence in the Crab Nebula: Evidence of lower hybrid parametric instabilities driven by the pulsar wave

Strong small scale turbulence is observed in the Crab Nebula from the temporal pulse broadening data. It is shown that the strong 30 Hz pulsar wave can parametrically excite instabilities near the lower hybrid frequency in the thermal plasma of the Crab Nebula with a characteristic wavelength of the order of the scale size a of the turbulence observed. These instabilities provided a coupling mechanism between the pulsar wave and the Nebula plasma.

Plasma irregularities in the comet's tail

Scintillation theory is invoked to explain fluctuations in radio intensity observed during occultation of the extragalactic radio source PKS 2025-15 by the plasma tail of comet 1973 XII on Jan. 5, 1975. Plasma irregularities and turbulence in the tail of the comet (Kohoutek 1973f) are fitted to a Gaussian spectrum and to a Kolmogorov power-law spectrum in analyzing the scintillation data. The rms fluctuation of electron density in the cometary tail is reported at 80 electrons per cu mm, the inner scale of the fluctuation at 800 km, and the largest scale of fluctuation at possibly 400,000 km. A hump in the comet power-law spectrum is noted. Use of the power spectrum of electron density fluctuations to predict the power spectrum of magnetic field fluctuations for irregularities associated with hydromagnetic turbulence is recommended.

Theory of thin screen scintillations for a spherical wave

A thin screen scintillation theory for a spherical wave is presented under the 'quasi-optical' approximation. CO/d-3 Delta sub i to X-1 Sigma +/ fluorescence from photodissociation of CO2 by 923 A photons

Measurements of vacuum ultraviolet fluorescence from the photodissociation of CO2 by photons from a N IV line emission source at a wavelength of 923 A have revealed a second CO band system in addition to the expected emission bands. Spectra with time resolution were obtained and the fluorescence lifetime and the dependence of fluorescence intensity on CO2 pressure were measured. An analysis of this data has permitted the second band system to be identified as originating from CO(d-3 Delta sub i to X-1 Sigma +) transitions.

The irregularity spectrum in interstellar space

Published data on the interstellar scintillations of three pulsars are analyzed using a theory based on the Markov approximation for strong scintillations. The data are found to be consistent with either a Gaussian or Kolmogorov-like power-law irregularity spectrum for the interstellar material. For two of the pulsars, application of the Kolmogorov power law suggests the presence of regions of larger than normal electron density between us and the pulsar. The parameters of the deduced power-law spectrum are considered with independent measures of the large-scale structures of the gas and indicate the possibility of a broadly turbulent interstellar medium with a Kolmogorov-like spectrum.

Strong scintillations in astrophysics. IV - Cross-correlation between different frequencies and finite bandwidth effects

The cross-correlation of the intensity fluctuations between different frequencies and finite-bandwidth effects on the intensity correlations are calculated based on the Markov approximation. The results may be applied to quite general turbulence spectra for an extended turbulent medium. Calculations of the cross-correlation function and of finite-bandwidth effects are explicitly carried out for both Gaussian and Kolmogorov turbulence spectra. The increases of the correlation scale of intensity fluctuations are different for these two spectra, and the difference can be used to determine whether the interstellar turbulent medium has a Gaussian or a Kolmogorov spectrum.

Plasma irregularities in the Comet's tail

The fluctuations in the intensity of radio source PKS 2025-15 during its occultation by Comet Kohoutek (1973f) on January 5, 1974, can be interpreted as scintillations due to the turbulent plasma in the Comet's tail. It was found that the rms fluctuation of the electron density in the Comet's tail is about 200 electrons/cu cm, the inner scale of the fluctuation is about 8 x 10 to the 7th power cm and the largest scale of fluctuation may reach 6 x 10 to the 10th power cm.

Strong scintillations in astrophysics. III - The fluctuations in intensity

Fluctuations in intensity due to wave propagation in a wide range of turbulent media, are discussed on the basis of a previously developed theory of strong scintillations. An asymptotic analytic solution to the fourth-moment equation is presented, and its range of validity is discussed. Various parameters characterizing the intensity fluctuations, such as scintillation index and correlation scale, are expressed in terms of turbulence parameters for both Gaussian and power-law irregularity spectra as well as for thick and thin turbulent media.
