Effects of forearm bier block with bretylium on the hemodynamic and metabolic responses to handgrip

We tested the hypothesis that a reduction in sympathetic tone to exercising forearm muscle would increase blood flow, reduce muscle acidosis, and attenuate reflex responses. Subjects performed a progressive, four-stage rhythmic handgrip protocol before and after forearm bier block with bretylium as forearm blood flow (Doppler) and metabolic (venous effluent metabolite concentration and (31)P-NMR indexes) and autonomic reflex responses (heart rate, blood pressure, and sympathetic nerve traffic) were measured. Bretylium inhibits the release of norepinephrine at the neurovascular junction. Bier block increased blood flow as well as oxygen consumption in the exercising forearm (P < 0.03 and P < 0.02, respectively). However, despite this increase in flow, venous K(+) release and H(+) release were both increased during exercise (P < 0.002 for both indexes). Additionally, minimal muscle pH measured during the first minute of recovery with NMR was lower after bier block (6.41 +/- 0.08 vs. 6.20 +/- 0.06; P < 0.036, simple effects). Meanwhile, reflex effects were unaffected by the bretylium bier block. The results support the conclusion that sympathetic stimulation to muscle during exercise not only limits muscle blood flow but also appears to limit anaerobiosis and H(+) release, presumably through a preferential recruitment of oxidative fibers.

High-performance multiprocessor architecture for a 3-D lattice gas model

The lattice gas method has recently emerged as a promising discrete particle simulation method in areas such as fluid dynamics. We present a very high-performance scalable multiprocessor architecture, called ALGE, proposed for the simulation of a realistic 3-D lattice gas model, Henon's 24-bit FCHC isometric model. Each of these VLSI processors is as powerful as a CRAY-2 for this application. ALGE is scalable in the sense that it achieves linear speedup for both fixed and increasing problem sizes with more processors. The core computation of a lattice gas model consists of many repetitions of two alternating phases: particle collision and propagation. Functional decomposition by symmetry group and virtual move are the respective keys to efficient implementation of collision and propagation.

Infrared fiber coupled acousto-optic tunable filter spectrometer

A spectrometer design is introduced which combines an acoustooptic tunable filter (AOTF) and IR-transmitting flouride-glass fibers. The AOTF crystal is fabricated from TeO2 and permits random access to any wavelength in less than 50 microseconds, and the resulting spectrometer is tested for the remote analysis of gases and hydrocarbons. The AOTF spectrometer, when operated with a high-speed frequency synthesizer and optimized algorithms, permits accurate high-speed spectroscopy in the mid-IR spectral region.

SCM Handbooks for dc-to-dc Converters

Two documents aid in design of control modules for dc-to-dc converters. Features of SCM include: Adaptive stability, power component stress limiting, implementation of various control laws, unified design approach. Analysis and quidelines contained in handbooks enable engineer to design SCM circuit and confidently predict resulting overall performance.

Krytox Lubrication Tape Study

The use of Krytox, a fluorinated oil, as a tape surface lubricant was studied for a wideband video tape recorder. In spite of the 5 to 1 head wear reduction credited to the surface lubricant, the resultant head life fell short of the 1500 hour goal.
