Bistable Collapsible Tubular Mast Booms

A promising candidate for deployable composite structures is the two-shelled Collapsible Tubular Mast (CTM) boom, which is to be employed on future solar sail and interplanetary small satellite platforms by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This is due to its two omega-shaped shells forming a closed-section which yields large stiffnesses that allowed for high dimensional stability. An inextensional analytical model describing the bending deformation mechanics of CTM booms was used to determine how design variables induce bistability, or the existence of two strain energy wells. Bistable booms were favorable due to low strain energy requirements for the coiled state and had more controllable deployment when compared to monostable booms. The effects of varying lamina material, laminate layup, and shell arc geometries between different inner and outer shell segments on the second strain energy well and stiffness properties were determined for cross-sections formed by circular segments. The full design space for two-shelled composite CTM booms was explored to evaluate the validity of the simple analytical model developed. Optimal CTM boom designs were manufactured and experimentally characterized for comparisons against model results. The model under-predicted the second stable coiled diameter of the complete two-shelled booms by 27-33% and as low as 3-8% for the individual shells wrapped alone.

Mechanics of Bistable Two-Shelled Composite Booms

The phenomenon of bistability in single-walled composite cylindrical shells or slit tubes has been extensively studied with detailed models that represent the mechanics of these structures as they undergo large deformations from the extended to the stored state and vice versa. This study focuses on the mechanics of bistable composite booms that are formed by coupling or bonding two thin shells. A two-parameter inextensional analytical model is used to describe the behavior of the various two-shelled structures and find laminates and shell geometries of interest that induce bistability. The natural coiled diameters of all boom types are predicted analytically and compared with preliminary experimental data. Using the derived model, parametric analysis is conducted to determine optimal boom geometries that maximize stiffnesses and meet system requirements while retaining bistability.

Estimating satellite pose and motion parameters using a novelty filter and neural net tracker

A system for determining the position, orientation and motion of a satellite with respect to a robotic spacecraft using video data is advanced. This system utilizes two levels of pose and motion estimation: an initial system which provides coarse estimates of pose and motion, and a second system which uses the coarse estimates and further processing to provide finer pose and motion estimates. The present paper emphasizes the initial coarse pose and motion estimation sybsystem. This subsystem utilizes novelty detection and filtering for locating novel parts and a neural net tracker to track these parts over time. Results of using this system on a sequence of images of a spin stabilized satellite are presented.

Multiple degree of freedom object recognition using optical relational graph decision nets

Multiple-degree-of-freedom object recognition concerns objects with no stable rest position with all scale, rotation, and aspect distortions possible. It is assumed that the objects are in a fairly benign background, so that feature extractors are usable. In-plane distortion invariance is provided by use of a polar-log coordinate transform feature space, and out-of-plane distortion invariance is provided by linear discriminant function design. Relational graph decision nets are considered for multiple-degree-of-freedom pattern recognition. The design of Fisher (1936) linear discriminant functions and synthetic discriminant function for use at the nodes of binary and multidecision nets is discussed. Case studies are detailed for two-class and multiclass problems. Simulation results demonstrate the robustness of the processors to quantization of the filter coefficients and to noise.

Model-based satellite acquisition and tracking

A model-based optical processor is introduced for the acquisition and tracking of a satellite in close proximity to an imaging sensor of a space robot. The type of satellite is known in advance, and a model of the satellite (which exists from its design) is used in this task. The model base is used to generate multiple smart filters of the various parts of the satellite, which are used in a symbolic multi-filter optical correlator. The output from the correlator is then treated as a symbolic description of the object, which is operated upon by an optical inference processor to determine the position and orientation of the satellite and to track it as a function of time. The knowledge and model base also serves to generate the rules used by the inference machine. The inference machine allows for feedback to optical correlators or feature extractors to locate the individual parts of the satellite and their orientations.

Correlation filters for orientation estimation

An important task in many vision applications is that of rapidly estimating the orientation of an object with respect to some frame of reference. Because of their speed and parallel processing capabilities, optical correlators should prove valuable in this application. This paper considers two algorithms for object orientation estimation based on optical correlations and presents some initial simulation results.
