Pressure Spike in The LBNF Absorber Core s Gun Drilled Cooling Channel from an Accident Beam Pulse

The LBNF Absorber consists of thirteen 6061-T6 aluminum core blocks. The core blocks are water cooled with de-ionized (DI) water which becomes radioactive during beam operations. The cooling water flows through gun-drilled channels in the core blocks. The cooling water is supplied by the LBNF Absorber Radioactive Water (RAW) cooling system which is designed as per ASME B31.3 Normal Fluid Service [1]. An uninhibited beam accident pulse striking the water channels was identified as a credible accident scenario. In this study, it is assumed that the beam pulse hits the Absorber directly without interacting with any of the other upstream beamline components. The beam parameters used for the LBNF beam are 120 GeV, 2.4 MW with a 1.2 s cycle time. The accident pulse lasts for 10 μs. The maximum energy is deposited in the 3rd aluminum core block. For the sake of simplicity, it is assumed that the accident pulse strikes the 1 in. ID water channel directly. The analysis here simulates the pressure rise in the water during and after the beam pulse and its effects on the aluminum piping components that deliver water to the core blocks. The weld strengths as determined by the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRDF) and the Allowable Strength Design (ASD) are compared to the forces generated in the weld owing to the pressure spike. A transient structural analysis was used to determine the equivalent membrane, peak, and bending stresses and they were com-pared to allowable limits.

A Model-Based Thruster Leakage Monitor for the Cassini Spacecraft

The Cassini spacecraft was launched on October 15, 1997. It uses thrusters to perform many spacecraft control functions: to detumble the spacecraft, to maintain three-axis attitude control, to perform small trajectory correction burns, to desaturate the reaction wheels, and others.

Performance of Four-Wheel-Steering Vehicles in Lane Change Maneuvers

This study addresses the performance of four-wheel-steering vehicles in high-speed lane change maneuvers. We compare the steering commands of an experienced driver in executing high-speed lane change maneuvers in road tests with those determined via solving suitably formulated optimization problems. It turns out that the optimal control determined is qualitatively comparable to the steering commands used by experienced drivers in road tests. Hence, we can analytically compare the performance of an experienced driver in executing lane change maneuvers using different vehicles.

Emulating the Lateral Dynamics of a Range of Vehicles Using a Four-Wheel-Steering Vehicle

The concept of Variable Dynamic Testbed Vehicle (VDTV) has been proposed as a tool to evaluate collision detection/avoidance systems, to perform vehicle-related human factors research, and to support other Automated HighWay System programs. The goal of this study is to analytically investigate to what extent a VDTV with four-wheel-steering can emulate the lateral dynamics of a broad range of vehicle models.

Modulation and coding for fast fading mobile satellite communication channels

The performance of Gaussian baseband filtered minimum shift keying (GMSK) using differential detection in fast Rician fading, with a novel treatment of the inherent intersymbol interference (ISI) leading to an exact solution is discussed. Trellis-coded differentially coded phase shift keying (DPSK) with a convolutional interleaver is considered. The channel is the Rician Channel with the line-of-sight component subject to a lognormal transformation.

Low cost training aids and devices

The need for advanced flight simulators for two engine aircraft is discussed. Cost effectiveness is a major requirement. Other training aids available for increased effectiveness are recommended. Training aids include: (1) audio-visual slides; (2) information transfer; (3) programmed instruction; and (4) interactive training systems.

TAC BRAWLER - An application of engagement simulation modeling to simulator visual system display requirements for air combat maneuvering

The TAC BRAWLER air combat simulation models both the acquisition and use of visual information by the pilot. It was used to provide the designers of manned simulators for air-to-air combat with information regarding the training implications of display system resolution, inherent target contrast, field of view, and transport delay. Various display designs were simulated, and the resulting quantitative and qualitative differences in engagements were considered indicators of possible mistraining. Display resolution was found to alter combats primarily through its effect on detection ranges; the 'pixel averaging' contrast management technique was shown to largely compensate for this problem. Transport delay significantly degrades pilot tracking ability, but the training impact of the effect is unclear.

An acoustical study of the XV-15 Tilt Rotor Research Aircraft

Acoustic data were obtained during a full-scale test of the XV-15 Tilt Rotor Research Aircraft in the Ames 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel. The XV-15 has two 25-ft-diameter, three-bladed rotors at the tips of a 32-ft span wing. The rotors are used as lifting rotors, as propellers, and in various intermediate stages. Acoustic waveforms, dBA, and spectra as functions of different rotor conditions are presented and discussed. The noise level was found to be sensitive to change in rotor-disk angle of attack in the helicopter configuration. Much higher noise levels and harmonic contents were found in the helicopter mode than in the airplane mode. The measurements are compared with existing theoretical predictions which include wind-tunnel wall reflections.

Wind tunnel investigations of model rotor noise at low tip speeds

Experimental and related analytical results on model rotor rotational and broadband noise obtained in the anechoic wind tunnel and rotor facility are summarized. Factors studied include various noise sources, effects of helicopter performance parameters on noise generated by a model main rotor, appropriate scaling laws for the various types of main rotor noise, and the effects of intensity and size scales of injected turbulence on the intensity and spectra of broadband noise.
