A Coacervate-Based Mixed-Conducting Binder for High-Power, High-Energy Batteries

Polymer binders add crucial structural integrity to lithium ion battery composite cathodes, but industry standard binders, such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), are insulating to ions and electrons, detrimentally adding resistance to the overall system. In this work, we use electrostatics to stabilize a blend of a charged conjugated polymer with an oppositely charged polyelectrolyte, providing a processable, stable binder with high ionic and electronic conduction. Using LiFePO4 cathodes as a model system, we show significant improvement in rate capability and stability, with the conducting binder enabling a 39% utilization at 6C compared to 1.6% when PVDF is the binder. Additionally, the conducting binder affords a 63% capacity retention over 400 C/2 cycles, compared to only a 6% retention over 400 cycles when PVDF is the binder. These results show that electrostatically stabilized complexation is a promising strategy to integrate both electronic and ionic conductivity into a binder, while simultaneously maintaining stability and processability.

Role of Complexation Strength on the Photophysical and Transport Properties of Semiconducting Charged Polymer Complexes

The high polymer fraction in complexes of conjugated and insulating polyelectrolytes offers unique opportunities for the fabrication of conductive thick films and bulk structures. The electrostatic interactions in these systems further provide a handle for controlling their structure and properties. The impact of charge-mediated complexation strength on the photophysical and electronic transport properties in blends of conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) with oppositely charged polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) was examined. Complexes were formed with varying frequency of charged repeat units, from 50 to 100%, on an anionic polythiophene-based CPE and a complimentary cationic PIL. In highly charged complexes, the intimate mixing between the CPE and the PIL reduced the structural disorder along the CPE backbone, enhancing its intrachain conjugation and interchain stacking. In weakly charged complexes (<90%), these chain planarization effects were absent and microphase separation occurred. At all charge fractions examined, the electrical conductivity of an acid-doped complex was higher than that of the unblended constituent CPE. Further, the highest electrical conductivity, near 1 S cm –1 , was found for a charge fraction of 100%. These results demonstrate the potential for designing effective polymeric conductors using electrostatic complexation.

Double Doping of Semiconducting Polymers Using Ion-Exchange with a Dianion

The interactions between counterions and electronic carriers in electrically doped semiconducting polymers are important for delocalization of charge carriers, electronic conductivity, and thermal stability. The introduction of a dianions in semiconducting polymers leads to double doping where there is one counterion for two charge carriers. Double doping minimizes structural distortions, but changes the electrostatic interactions between the carriers and counterions. Polymeric ionic liquids (PIL) with croconate dianions are helpful to investigate the role of the counterion in p-type semiconducting polymers. PILs prevent diffusion of the cation into the semiconducting polymers during ion exchange. The redox-active croconate dianions undergo ion exchange with doped semiconducting polymers depending on their ionization energy. Croconate dianions are found to reduce doped films of poly(3-hexyl thiophene), but undergo ion exchange with a polythiophene with tetraethylene glycol side chains, P(g 4 2T-T), that has a lower ionization energy. The croconate dianion maintains crystalline order in P(g 4 2T-T) and leads to a lower activation energy for the electrical conductivity than PF 6 – counterions. The control of the doping level with croconate allows optimization of the thermoelectric performance of the semiconducting polymer. Finally, the thermal stability of the doped films of P(g 4 2T-T) is found to depend strongly on the nature of the counterion.
