Optical design of the Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph for the Cassini mission to Saturn

When the Cassini spacecraft arrives at Saturn early in the next century it will carry an Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS). Observations made with the UVIS will support a broad set of scientific investigations including spectroscopy, imaging, and occultations. The UVIS consists of three spectroscopic channels covering the wavelength ranges 55-115 nm, 115-190 nm, and 160-320 nm. Each channel has an off-axis parabolic telescope followed by a toroidal grating spectrograph and an imaging microchannel plate-CODACON detector. The UVIS configuration was selected as a balanced solution to a large number of engineering and scientific constraints. We describe these constraints, the optical design, and the anticipated performance of the instrument.

Hex-square moire patterns in imagers using microchannel plates

In electronic imaging detectors using microchannel plates, the mismatch between the pixels on a square mesh and the microchannels on a hexagonal mesh produces moire image defects. Theoretical statistical estimates of the sizes of the microposition offsets and the flat field intensity errors are calculated, showing the trade-off between resolution and position accuracy. A distinction is made between moments of spot images and moments of the single-pixel-response functions. As the resolution between the hex and square meshes is improved, the detector resolution is improved, but at the expense of an about 10 percent moire pattern. These moire patterns will not be properly corrected by dividing by the flat field image.

Solar Mesosphere Explorer observations of stratospheric and mesospheric water vapor

It is noted that while the SME (Solar Mesosphere Explorer) data is consistent with the earlier LIMS (Limb Infrared Monitor of the Stratosphere) results, its interpretation is complicated by aerosol contamination, particularly at altitudes below 35 km. This contamination arose from several volcanic eruptions, including that of El Chichon. Analyses are reported of a subset of data from the SME satellite, concentrating primarily on the period January through March 1982 so as to avoid contamination from the El Chichon volcanic aerosol. The SME observations of water vapor between 20 and 60 km were inverted for the first three months of 1982 as well as for selected additional periods. Reasonable results are obtained at locations where no contamination by aerosol is suspected.
