Organic matter in meteorites.

The meteorites known as carbonaceous chondrites contain organic compounds. These compounds were subjected to detailed analyses which indicate an abiotic origin. Results for the Murchison meteorite are compared with the Murray meteorite, another carbonaceous chondrite. A combined gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy technique was used for the analysis. Results showed a similarity between the two chondrites, in that at least 18 amino acids were present in both, and nine of these could be separated into the D and L forms, present in equal abundance for each amino acid. The amino acids in the Murchison meteorite were found to be optically inactive. At least 23 aromatic hydrocarbons were revealed in the Murchison meteorite by the combined chromatography-spectroscopy technique. The meteorite contained all possible isomers of amino acids with two and three carbon atoms, and all but two of the isomers of amino acids with four carbon atoms. This distribution suggests a random synthesis of the amino acids, rather than a selective synthesis by organisms.

Evidence for amino-acids of extraterrestrial origin in the Orgueil meteorite.

The problems of separation of contaminant from indigenous amino-acids in meteorites can be largely overcome by applying gas chromatographic techniques for the separation of D,L enantiomers of amino-acids as their diastereomeric derivatives and the identification of these compounds by gas chromatographic retention times and mass spectral fragmentation patterns. Two samples of Orgueil meteorite were examined. The results show that there are amino-acids indigenous to the Orgueil meteorite in addition to those present as contaminants.

Mass spectral analysis of C3 and C4 aliphatic amino acid derivatives.

Diagnostic criteria are obtained for the distinction of alpha, beta, gamma, and N-methyl isomers of the C3 and C4 aliphatic amino acids, using mass spectral analysis of the derivatives of these acids. The use of deuterium labeling has helped in the understanding of certain fragmentation pathways.

Experiments in Jovian atmosphere.

A 1000 ml reaction vessel, fitted with a stopcock, two joints for the electrodes, and a connecting joint, was used in the investigation. The flask, which has a cold finger at the bottom, was filled with an equimolar mixture of anhydrous methane and ammonia. The electrodes were adjusted to provide a gap of about 0.8 cm between them so that the current flowing through the electrodes was about 0.5 mA and a continuous spark could be observed. The operation was continued for 20 hr. The analysis of the reaction products showed the formation of amino nitriles under the conditions of the investigation.
