Potential applications of GSC-2 for GAIA operations

The second guide star catalog (GSC-2) is a project that aims to create a complete catalog of stars and galaxies to about the 18th magnitude, and would contain colors, magnitudes, positions and proper motions. The catalog would provide an object list for the construction of an input catalog for possible future astrometric satellites, such as the global astrometric interferometer for astrophysics (GAIA) satellite. With a schedule that is compatible with the projected timeframe of GAIA, the GSC-2 could be available in time to support the preparatory astrophysical observations for an input catalog. The availability of the digitalized images for the preparation of finding charts would improve the efficiency of this task.

A digitized version of the NLTT Catalogue of proper motions

An optically scanning data-entry machine and various manual techniques are used to digitize the NLTT Catalogue and the first supplement to the NLTT Catalogue. Included in the catalog are stars found on over 800 Palomar proper-motion survey plates to have relative annual proper motions exceeding 0.18 arcsec. The supplement contains data for 398 stars having motions larger than 0.179 arcsec annually.

The guide star catalog

Part 1 of the catalog presents an astronomical overview of the Guide Star Catalog, together with its history, the properties of its current implementation, and the prospects for enhancement. Part 2 presents the algorithms used in photometric and astrometric calibration of the catalog, as well as the analyses of the related errors. Part 3 presents the current structure and content, as well as future enhancements in this area. An overview of the forthcoming publications is given, both with regard to scientific papers and electronic media.
