The computed spectrum of AlC

The low-lying (up to about 40,000/cm) doublet and quartet states of AlC have been studied at the CASSCF and MRCI levels of theory. The bonding in the X4Sigma(-) state is shown to involve three one-electron bonds. The first excited state, a 2Pi, lies about 8700/cm higher and like the X4Sigma(-) state is derived from ground state Al and C, but has a two-electron pi bond leading to a much shorter bond length.

On the interpretation of the photoelectron spectrum of NiCO(-)

Ab initio calculations have been carried out for the X1Sigma(+), a3Delta, b3Delta(+), and c3Pi states of NiCO, using a large Gaussian basis set and an MCPF treatment of electron correlation. The calculated dissociation energies, De (kcal/mol), are 30.1, 11.5, 10.1, and 4.3 respectively. An analysis of the relative cross sections for photodetachment indicates the the lower energy feature in the photoelectron spectrum of NiCO(-) results primarily from bound-free transitions to the c3Pi state, with some contribution from bound-bound transitions to both the b3Sigma(+) and c3Pi states.

Theoretical study of the NO gamma system

A systematic study of the NO gamma system with level of correlation treatment was carried out using large Gaussian basis sets to determine the potential curves for the X2Pi and A2Sigma(+) states of NO. It is shown that the A2Sigma-X2Pi electronic transition moment (gamma system) increases monotonically with decreasing internuclear distance and that the increase in the moment as r decreases is correlated with the increasing degree of diffuse character in the X2Pi state. The results of a study of the X2Pi and A2Sigma(+) dipole moment functions showed that the X2Pi vibrationally averaged dipole moments and the (1-0) and (2-0) vibration-rotation band intensities agree well with experimental data.

Full configuration-interaction study of the ionic-neutral curve crossing in LiF

Full configuration-interaction (FCI) calculations are used to assess the relative ability of methods for truncating the n-particle expansion in describing the ionic-neutral curve crossing between the two lowest Sigma(+) states of LiF. While the FCI calculations yield a smooth dipole moment function, MRCI calculations based on CASSCF orbitals optimized for the lowest state at all r values yield a discontinuous dipole moment function. However, when the orbitals are optimized using a state-averaged CASSCF procedure, with equal weights for the ionic and neutral solutions, both the CASSCF and MRCI dipole moment functions are smooth and in reasonable agreement with the FCI. No single-reference-based method is found to work satisfactorily. Potential curves for the lowest two Sigma(+) states are determined in both the adiabatic and diabatic representations using a large atomic natural orbit Gaussian basis set and a state-averaged CASSCF/MRCI treatment of electron correlation.

Theoretical study of the dissociation energy and the red and violet band systems of CN

The dissociation energy D0 is determined here for the CN ground-state and radiative lifetimes for the A 2Pi and B 2Sigma(+) states. D0 is found to be 7.65 + or - 0.06 eV, corresponding to Delta Hf (CN) = 105.3 + or - 1.5 kcal/mole. These results are compared with current experimental estimates and with previous theoretical calculations.

Theoretical study of the nitrogen atom hyperfine coupling constant

The nitrogen-atom isotropic hyperfine coupling constant A(iso) is studied as a function of improvements in both the one-particle and n-particle basis sets. The study underscores the importance of diffuse basis functions. For example, the (9s 5p) primitive set of Huzinaga (1965) augmented with an even-tempered diffuse s function yields values for A(iso) that are virtually identical to an energy-optimized (23s 12p) even-tempered set. The A(iso) constant is found to converge relatively quickly with increasing l quantum numbers: d, f, and g functions are estimated to contribute 2.5 + or - 0.2, 0.4 + or - 0.1, and 0.05 + or - 0.05 MHz, respectively. Full CI calibration calculations indicate that very high levels of correlation treatment are required for quantitative results. In addition, a strong coupling is observed between the one-particle and n-particle requirements. The best result, 10.4 MHz, is in excellent agreement with the accurate experimental value of 10.4509 MHz.

Full configuration-interaction benchmark calculations for AlH

Full CI and CASSCF/SOCI theoretical computations are presented for the X 1Sigma(+), A 1Pi, and C 1Sigma(+) states of AlH. The aim is to establish benchmark data to calibrate methods which describe valence-Rydberg transitions in other molecules. The results are presented in extensive tables and graphs and compared with published theoretical and experimental values, and the conditions under which CASSCF/SOCI calculations accurately reproduce the FCI results are defined.

Theoretical studies of the monoxides and monosulfides of Y, Zr, and Nb

Modified-CPF and CASSCF/multireference-CI theoretical calculations are presented for the ground and low-lying states of YO and YS, ZrO and ZS, and NbO and NbS. The techniques employed are explained, and the calculated spectroscopic constants are presented in extensive tables. Good agreement is found with published experimental data on the oxides, and it is inferred that the sulfide results are accurate as well. Particular attention is given to the high-lying quartet manifold of states in YO and the (1) 3Pi-a3Delta transition of ZrS (possibly the source of the IR Keenan bands seen in S-star spectra).

Theoretical study of the scandium and yttrium halides

The X1Sigma(+) ground states and a3Delta excited states of the diatomic halides of Sc and Y are characterized theoretically, using the SDCI coupled-pair functional method and the state-averaged CASSCF method to determine the spectroscopic constants and related properties. The techniques employed are discussed, and the results are presented in extensive tables. The dissociation energies are given as D0 = 6.00 eV for ScF, 4.55 eV for ScCl, 3.90 eV for ScBr, 6.72 eV for YF, 5.36 eV for YCl, and 4.74 eV for YBr.

The 2D Rydberg series in Al I

High-quality ab initio electronic structure calculations have been performed on the 2D Rydberg series in Al I. The configuration 3s3p2(2D) is shown to contribute substantially to the lowest four 2D Rydberg states. The same configuration also contributes substantially to a 2D state embedded in the ionization continuum. Computed oscillator strengths for the first six members of the 2D Rydberg transitions are given: these should be of substantially higher accuracy than currently available values.

Theoretical study of the alkali and alkaline-earth monosulfides

Ab initio calculations have been used to obtain accurate spectroscopic constants for the X2Pi and A2Sigma(+) states of the alkali sulfides and the X1Sigma(+), a3Pi, and A1Pi states of the alkaline-earth sulfides. In contrast to the alkali oxides, the alkali sulfides are found to have X2Pi ground states, due to the larger electrostatic interaction. Dissociation energies of 3.27 eV for BeS, 2.32 eV for MgS, 3.29 eV for CaS, and 3.41 eV for SrS have been obtained for the X1Sigma(+) states of the alkaline-earth sulfides, in good agreement with experimental results. Core correlation is shown to increase the Te values for the a3Pi and A1Pi states of MgS, CaS, and SrS.

Theoretical studies of AlF, AlCl, and AlBr

Spectroscopic constants have been obtained for the lowest six singlet and lowest five triplet states of AlF and AlCl. The results suggest that the correct ordering of the triplet manifold in these molecules is: a 3Pi, b 3Sigma(+), c 3Sigma(+), d 3Pi, and e 3Delta. Radiative lifetimes have been determined for the excited states, and the A 1Pi to X 1Sigma(+) transition in AlF, AlCl, and AlBr has been examined in detail. A-X transition moment functions, Einstein coefficients, and A 1Pi vibrational lifetimes have been obtained for AlF and AlCl.

Theoretical confirmation of a 4-Delta ground state for FeH

Large CAS SCF/multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) and modified coupled pair functional (MCPF) calculations are carried out for the 4-Delta and 6-Delta states of FeH using very large Gaussian basis sets. At the MCPF level, 3s and 3p correlation preferentially lowers the 4-Delta state by 0.10 eV. Adding this inner-shell correlation effect to our best CAS SCF/MRCI+Q valence treatment results in a 4-Delta-6 Delta separation of 0.16 eV. This supports the interpretation of the photodetachment spectra of Stevens et al. (1983) that places the 6-Delta state about 0.25 eV above the 4-Delta ground state.

Theoretical study of the A prime 5Sigma(+)g and C double prime 5Pi u states of N2 - Implications for the N2 afterglow

Theoretical spectroscopic constants are reported for the A prime 5Sigma(+)g and C double prime 5Pi u states of N2 based on CASSCF/MRCI calculations using large ANO Gaussian basis sets. The calculated A prime Sigma(+)g potential differs qualitatively from previous calculations in that the inner well is significantly deeper (De = 3450/cm). This deeper well provides considerable support for the suggestion of Berkowitz et al. (1956) that A prime 5Sigma(+)g is the primary precursor state involved in the yellow Lewis-Rayleigh afterglow of N2.

Core-core and core-valence correlation

The effect of 1s core correlation on properties and energy separations are analyzed using full configuration-interaction (FCI) calculations. The Be1S - 1P, the C 3P - 5S,m and CH(+) 1Sigma(+) - 1Pi separations, and CH(+) spectroscopic constants, dipole moment, and 1Sigma(+) - 1Pi transition dipole moment have been studied. The results of the FCI calculations are compared to those obtained using approximate methods.

Theoretical studies of the potential surface for the F + H2 - HF + H reaction

Several aspects of the F + H2 - HF + H potential energy hypersurface are considered. The classical barrier height is studied as a function of improvements to both the one-particle and n-particle treatments, approaching the one-particle basis set limit. The externally contracted CI (CCI) method is used to compute bending potentials in the collinear saddle point region. The calculated CCI surface is used to locate the bottleneck on the vibrationally adiabatic potential curve, and the reaction threshold is deduced from a one-dimensinal tunneling calculation. The true classical barrier height is estimated by adjusting the CCI barrier height for the difference in the calculated and experimental thresholds.

Theoretical study of the electron affinities of Cu, Cu2, and Cu3

The modified pair functional method is used here to compute the electron affinities of the negative ions of Cu, Cu2, and Cu3 to equal relative accuracy. The results show that, while the extra electron in Cu2(-) occupies a sigma(u) antibonding orbital, the orbital is polarized to reduce the density in the internuclear rergion. The calculations also show that Cu3(-) is a closed-shell linear molecule in its ground state, and that there is an excited triplet state about 0.7 eV higher in energy. This strongly suggests that photodetachment from the excited triplet state is responsible for the low energy structure observed in the photoelectron spectrum of Cu3(-).

Core-core and core-valence correlation

The effect of (1s) core correlation on properties and energy separations was analyzed using full configuration-interaction (FCI) calculations. The Be 1 S - 1 P, the C 3 P - 5 S and CH+ 1 Sigma + or - 1 Pi separations, and CH+ spectroscopic constants, dipole moment and 1 Sigma + - 1 Pi transition dipole moment were studied. The results of the FCI calculations are compared to those obtained using approximate methods. In addition, the generation of atomic natural orbital (ANO) basis sets, as a method for contracting a primitive basis set for both valence and core correlation, is discussed. When both core-core and core-valence correlation are included in the calculation, no suitable truncated CI approach consistently reproduces the FCI, and contraction of the basis set is very difficult. If the (nearly constant) core-core correlation is eliminated, and only the core-valence correlation is included, CASSCF/MRCI approached reproduce the FCI results and basis set contraction is significantly easier.
