Mars 2020 Mission Design and Navigation Overview

Following the exceptionally successful Mars Science Laboratory mission which placed the Curiosity rover in the interior of Gale Crater in August 2012, NASA will launch the next rover in the 2020 Earth to Mars opportunity arriving to the Red Planet in February 2021 to explore areas suspected of former habitability and look for evidence of past life. This paper details the mission and navigation requirements set by the Project and how the final mission design and navigation plan satisfies those requirements.

Mars 2020 Site-Specific Mission Performance Analysis: Part 2. Surface Traversability

The Mars 2020 Rover Mission (M2020) is characterized by long-range traverses between scientific Regions Of Interest (ROIs), as well as the demanding requirement on the distance and time for the inter-ROI traverses. As a result, surface traversability is one of the major driving factors for the landing site selection of M2020. With the newly developed Mars Terrain Traversability analysis Tools (MTTT), we performed traversability analysis of the eight candidate landing sites with an unprecedented granularity. This paper describes the MTTT analysis capabilities, as well as how the MTTT capabilities were used to down-select from eight to three candidate landing sites for further evaluation.

Wideband Instrument for Snow Measurements (WISM)

This presentation discusses current efforts to develop a Wideband Instrument for Snow Measurements (WISM). The objective of the effort are as follows: to advance the utility of a wideband active and passive instrument (8-40 gigahertz) to support the snow science community; improve snow measurements through advanced calibration and expanded frequency of active and passive sensors; demonstrate science utility through airborne retrievals of snow water equivalent (SWE); and advance the technology readiness of broadband current sheet array (CSA) antenna technology for spaceflight applications.
