A Survey of Current Russion RTG Capabilities

Supplying radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTG) to American space missions became very complex. The process is marred by many obstacles: high cost, lack of new developments, difficult launch approval and NEPA compliance. At the same time there are many ambitious space missions for which an RTG would indisputably be the lightest, smallest and most robust power source. An American delegation investigated status of RTG production in Russia to decide if our product line could be supplemented by the Russian designs.

Solidifying Bi/MnBi at Low Gravity

Directional solidification of Bi/MnBi magnetic alloy under low gravity enhances magnetic properties. Magnetic properties of low-gravity Bi/MnBi alloy make attractive material for use in motors and other small electrical and electronic components.

Design, development, and field testing of Infrared Heterodyne Radiometer (IHR) for remote profiling of tropospheric and stratospheric species

The performance of a dual-channel infrared heterodyne radiometer, designed to remotely monitor the concentration and vertical distribution of selected atmospheric species, is described. Ground based solar viewing measurement using the IHR were performed at selected laser transitions for ammonia (NH3 and ozone O3). Flight tests were conducted aboard the Galileo II, NASA Ames CV-990, on the Latitude Survey Mission. Ozone was the selected atmospheric species for the airborne flight measurements because of the scientific interest in this atmospheric species, the availability of in situ monitors, the coordinated ozone measurements, and the availability of ground truth data. The IHS was operated in the solar viewing mode to determine ozone distributions in the stratosphere and in the nadir viewing mode to determine the ozone distribution in the troposphere. Airborne atmospheric propagation measurements also were carried out at selected CO2 laser transitions.

High-sensitivity receiver for CO2 laser communications

Wideband heterodyne receiver provides detection and demodulation of incident frequency modulated laser signal; search and acquisition circuitry to align two stations; tracking circuitry to maintain spatial alignment; and laser frequency monitor to frequency lock the transmit and local oscillator lasers.

Coherent infrared receivers for laser communications and radar.

Review of infrared coherent detection processes. Three receivers are described which were built with the primary goal of exploiting quantum noise limited heterodyne detection in a spectral region where atmospheric transmission characteristics are favorable. The combination of high power, high efficiency carbon dioxide lasers, coherent heterodyne receivers with sensitivities approaching the quantum noise limit, and low-loss atmospheric transmission have presented new possibilities in infrared communications and radar. In particular, high sensitivity 10.6 micrometer heterodyne receivers with wide IF bandwidths have been developed.
