Semiconductor to Topological Insulator Transition Induced by Stress Propagation in Metal Dichalcogenides Core-Shell Lateral Heterostructures

Polymorphic phase transition is an important route for engineering the properties of two-dimensional materials. Heterostructure construction, on the other hand, not only allows the integration of different functionalities for device applications, but also enables the exploration of new physics arising from proximity coupling. Yet, implementing a design that incorporates the advantages of both remains underexplored. Here in this paper, based on comprehensive experimental and theoretical studies of WSe 2 /SnSe 2 core-shell lateral heterostructure, we demonstrate an unexpected H to T' phase transition in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), correlating to a change of materials properties from semiconductor to topological insulator (TI), and propose a novel shell-to-core stress propagation mechanism. This finding offers new insights into TMD phase transition empowered by the rational design of heterostructures. Owing to the superconducting properties of SnSe 2 at low temperatures, the unique TI/superconductor core-shell template is expected to add more arsenals to the ongoing search of Majorana fermions in condensed matter systems.

Na ion dynamics in P2-Na x [Ni 1/3 Ti 2/3 ]O 2 : a combination of quasi-elastic neutron scattering and first-principles molecular dynamics study

In this work, the P2-type layered material Na 2/3 [Ni 1/3 Ti 2/3 ]O 2 was studied as a promising bi-functional electrode material for sodium-ion batteries. To assess the electrochemical performance of this material, we investigated the diffusion mechanism as well as ionic and electronic conductivity with a combination of experimental and computational techniques. The quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) experiments and first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations were performed to identify the diffusion mechanism. The QENS data showed that Na ion diffusion can be well described by the Singwi–Sjölander jump diffusion model, where the obtained mean jump length matched the distances between the neighboring edge-share and face-share Na sites. FPMD predicted diffusivity values similar to those from QENS. The computed composition dependence of ionic and electronic conductivity of Na x [Ni 1/3 Ti 2/3 ]O 2 suggested that electronic conductivity changes significantly when x deviates from 2/3 as the redox couple of Ni and Ti is activated, while the change of ionic conductivity with x is relatively small.

Scalable Polymer Precursor Based LiPON Type Li-Metal Interface Enabled High Performance Li-Sulfur Battery

The Battery 500 program objective is to research, develop, and demonstrate lithium battery technologies capable of achieving 500 Wh/kg with stable lifetime of 1000 cycles. This Battery 500 seedlings project has demonstrated a new approach and a pathway toward the program’s goals in just one awarded and executed phase. Cells have been assembled, tested, and evaluated. This report details efforts to develop polymer precursor electrolytes that offer properties anticipated to be similar or superior to LiPON glasses. Such precursors offer the potential to be used to process LiPON-like thin glass/ceramic coatings for use in lithium batteries. LiPON glasses provide a design basis for the synthesis of sets of oligomers/polymers by lithiation of OP(NH 2 ) 3-x (NH) x [from OP(NH) 3 ], OP(NH 2 ) 3-x (NHSiMe 3 ) x and [P=N] 3 (NHSiMe 3 ) 6-x (NH) x . Polymer electrolytes impregnated in/on celgard exhibit Li+ conductivities up to ~1×10 -5 S/cm at room temperature and are thermally stable to ≈150 °C. A Li-S battery assembled using a Li 6 SiPON composition polymer electrolyte exhibits an initial reversible capacity of 1500 mAh/g sulfur and excellent cycle performance at 0.25 and 0.5 C rate over 120 cycles, declining to 750 mAh/g at after a 220 h test period. At the same time, computational studies were performed to understand the conduction mechanism of LIPON and its interaction with Li metal. These initial project results provide a foundation for further development of the system to achieve the program goal.
