An unusual outflow around IRAS 16293-2422

The dense dusty molecular cloud core associated with the unusual protostellar source IRAS 16293-1422 (IRAS 1629A) was observed in the J = 2-1 transition of (C-12)O and (C-13)O. These observations indicate that IRAS 1629A is a source of an unusual high-velocity molecular outflow with four separate emission lobes. The morphology and velocity structure of the lobes may suggest the presence of a dual jet or double bipolar outflow system originating from the vicinity of IRAS 1269A. These observations resolve the outflowing gas into numerous high-velocity clumps which are either being continuously accelerated from low to high velocity along the entire length of the flow or are undergoing free-flow expansion.

The disks of T Tauri stars with flat infrared spectra

The energy distributions of T Tauri stars with flat infrared spectra is modeled by assuming that they have spatially thin disks with unorthodox radial gradients of temperature. Derived model parameters show that the disks associated with the flat-spectrum sources must contain intrinsic luminosity in addition to the energy intercepted and reprocessed from the central star, i.e., the disks must be active. Self-gravity may provide a possible source for this activity.

Spectral evolution of young stellar objects

An evolutionary sequence, from protostars to pre-main sequence stars, for the classification of young stellar objects is derived by comparing the predictions of the theoretical protostar models of Adams and Shu (AS, 1986) with the morphological classification scheme of Lada and Wilking (1984). It is shown that the AS models adequately explain the emergent spectral energy distributions of unidentified objects with negative spectral indices in the mid-IR and near-IR in both Taurus and Ophiuchus. If the infalling dust envelope is then completely removed, the spectra of the underlying stars and nebular disks used by AS provide a natural explanation for the near-IR and mid-IR excesses and the positive spectral indices of embedded T Tauri stars. It is found that the addition of a simple physical model for residual dust envelopes can reproduce the far-IR excesses found in some of these T Tauri stars.

An unbiased survey for high-velocity gas in the Monoceros OB1 molecular cloud

In order to make an unbiased survey for high-velocity gas in a single molecular cloud, a sensitive and uniformly sampled map of CO (J = 1-0) emission over a large fraction of the Mon OB1 (NGC 2264) molecular cloud was obtained. High-velocity line wings were detected on profiles over about 10 percent of the region surveyed. Complete maps of the 12, 25, 60 and 100-micron far-infrared emission from the Mon OB1 cloud were constructed as well by coadding the appropriate IRAS survey fields.

Spectroscopic evidence for infall around an extraordinary IRAS source in Ophiuchus

Millimeter-wave continuum observations and spectral line observations of the J = 5-4 and J = 2-1 transitions of CS toward IRAS 16293-2422, an extremely cold infrared source associated with a high-velocity molecular outflow in the Rho Ophiuchi molecular cloud, are reported. The observations indicate that this source is a dust-enshrouded object embedded in a dense, elongated configuration of molecular gas whose major axis is roughly orthogonal to the direction of the double bipolar outflow observed in it. The observations appear to provide spectroscopic evidence for significant mass infall motions associated with a young stellar object, and suggest that IRAS 16293-2422 is a true protostar.
