Retooling CFD for hypersonic aircraft

The CFD facility requirements of hypersonic aircraft configuration design development are different from those thus far employed for reentry vehicle design, because (1) the airframe and the propulsion system must be fully integrated to achieve the desired performance; (2) the vehicle must be reusable, with minimum refurbishment requirements between flights; and (3) vehicle performance must be optimized for a wide range of Mach numbers. An evaluation is presently made of flow resolution within shock waves, transition and turbulence phenomenon tractability, chemical reaction modeling, and hypersonic boundary layer transition, with state-of-the-art CFD.

Yesterday, today and tomorrow: A perspective of CFD at NASA's Ames Research Center

The opportunity to reflect on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) progam at the NASA Ames Research Center (its beginning, its present state, and its direction for the future) is afforded. Essential elements of the research program during each period are reviewed, including people, facilities, and research problems. The burgeoning role that CFD is playing in the aerospace business is discussed, as is the necessity for validated CFD tools. The current aeronautical position of this country is assessed, as are revolutionary goals to help maintain its aeronautical supremacy in the world.

Status of computational fluid dynamics in the United States

CFD-related progress in U.S. aerospace industries and research institutions is evaluated with respect to methods employed, their applications, and the computer technologies employed in their implementation. Goals for subsonic CFD are primarily aimed at greater fuel efficiency; those of supersonic CFD involve the achievement of high sustained cruise efficiency. Transatmospheric/hypersonic vehicles are noted to have recently become important concerns for CFD efforts. Attention is given to aspects of discretization, Euler and Navier-Stokes general purpose codes, zonal equation methods, internal and external flows, and the impact of supercomputers and their networks in advancing the state-of-the-art.

A perspective of computational fluid dynamics

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is maturing, and is at a stage in its technological life cycle where it is now routinely applied to complex problems. It is starting to create an impact on the design cycle of aerospace flight vehicles and their components. CFD is also being used to better understand the fluid physics of flows heretofore not understood, such as three-dimensional separation. CFD is also being used to complement and is complemented by experiments. In this paper, the primary and secondary pacing items that have governed CFD in the past are reviewed and updated. The future prospects of CFD are explored, which will offer people working in the discipline challenges that should extend the technological life cycle to further increase the capabilities of a proven and demonstrated technology.

Two-Dimensional Unsteady Euler-Equation Solver for Arbitrarily Shaped Flow Regions

A new technique is described for solving supersonic fluid dynamics problems containing multiple regions of continuous flow, each bounded by a permeable or impermeable surface. Region boundaries are, in general, arbitrarily shaped and time dependent. Discretization of such a region for solution by conventional finite difference procedures is accomplished using an elliptic solver which alleviates the dependence on a particular base coordinate system. Multiple regions are coupled together through the boundary conditions. The technique has been applied to a variety of problems including a shock diffraction problem and supersonic flow over a pointed ogive.
