Technology assessment and outlook

The development of large space structures (LSS) for the 1980s is surveyed. Consideration is given to LSS mission requirements, large space antenna technology, several steps towards LSS development (1985-1995), structures technology needs (e.g., structural design criteria, assembly concepts, and practical joint and member concepts), structural dynamics/controls technology needs, and materials technology needs (e.g., accelerated test techniques and life prediction techniques).

Structural and assembly concepts for large erectable space systems

This paper presents a summary of studies performed by the Space Division of Rockwell under contract to the Langley Research Center of the NASA. The studies specifically addressed requirements and concepts for erectable structures ranging in size from 100 to 300 meters using the Shuttle Orbiter as the operation/assembly base. This paper discusses various types of structural configurations and building block elements and the criteria which influence their designs. A brief review is given concerning the subject of flight control. An assembly concept is presented - showing how the Orbiter may be equipped and operated to build large area structures. Estimates are also given for cargo bay stowage and mission timelines.

Development of airframe design technology for crashworthiness.

This paper describes the NASA portion of a joint FAA-NASA General Aviation Crashworthiness Program leading to the development of improved crashworthiness design technology. The objectives of the program are to develop analytical technology for predicting crashworthiness of structures, provide design improvements, and perform full-scale crash tests. The analytical techniques which are being developed both in-house and under contract are described, and typical results from these analytical programs are shown. In addition, the full-scale testing facility and test program are discussed.

Application of space structures and materials technology to the civil sector.

Discussion of current and possible transfers of advances achieved in space structure and material technologies to nonspace technology areas capable or likely to benefit from applications of new materials, thermal control procedures, nondestructive evaluation techniques, analysis methods, and systems design approaches. Special attention is given to total systems analysis and design.
