Formation of the Potential Jump Over the Geomagnetically Quiet Sunlit Polar Cap Region

We consider the formation of a potential drop over the Earth's polar cap duringgeomagnetically quiet daytime. The observed potential drop is primarily defined by the hydrogen, photoelectron, and polar rain fluxes ratios and depends strongly on the energy distribution of thephotoelectron flux. Polar rain is an essential component of the model required for plasma quasineutrality. The potential distribution along the magnetic field line has two regions, with a small, gradual, potentialdrop of 3–4 V and a potential jump. The value of the potential jump depends on the hydrogen ion tophotoelectron flux ratio and is also controlled by polar rain electrons. With quasineutrality required at itsupper boundary, the jump only occurs in the presence of polar rain and its location depends on the polarrain flux. Model predictions compare well with FAST observations presented by Kitamura et al.(2012, https://doi.org/10.1029/2011JA017459).

Lower Hybrid Frequency Range Waves Generated by Ion Polarization Drift Due to Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Waves: Analysis of an Event Observed by the Van Allen Probe B

We analyze a wave event that occurred near noon between 07:03 and 07:08 UT on 23 February 2014 detected by the Van Allen Probes B spacecraft, where waves in the lower hybrid frequency range (LHFR) and electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves are observed to be highly correlated, with Pearson correlation coefficient of approximately 0.86. We assume that the correlation is the result of LHFR wave generation by the ions polarization drift in the electric field of the EMIC waves. To check this assumption the drift velocities of electrons and H+, He+, and O+ ions in the measured EMIC wave electric field were modeled. Then the LHFR wave linear instantaneous growth rates for plasma with these changing drift velocities and different plasma compositions were calculated. The time distribution of these growth rates, their frequency distribution, and the frequency dependence of the ratio of the LHFR wave power spectral density (PSD)parallel and perpendicular to the ambient magnetic eld to the total PSD were found. These characteristics of the growth rates were compared with the corresponding characteristics of the observed LHFR activity. Reasonable agreement between these features and the strong correlation between EMIC and LHFR energy densities support the assumption that the LHFR wave generation can be caused by the ions polarization drift in the electric field of an EMIC wave.

Ponderomotive Force in the Presence of Electric Fields

This paper presents averaged equations of particle motion in an electromagnetic wave of arbitrary frequency with its wave vector directed along the ambient magnetic field. The particle is also subjected to an E cross B drift and a background electric field slowly changing in space and acting along the magnetic field line. The fields, wave amplitude, and the wave vector depend on the coordinate along the magnetic field line. The derivations of the ponderomotive forces are done by assuming that the drift velocity in the ambient magnetic field is comparable to the particle velocity. Such a scenario leads to new ponderomotive forces, dependent on the wave magnetic field intensity, and, as a result, to the additional energy exchange between the wave and the plasma particles. It is found that the parallel electric field can lead to the change of the particle-wave energy exchange rate comparable to that produced by the previously discussed ponderomotive forces.

Electrodynamic Bare Tether Systems as a Thruster for the Momentum-Exchange/Electrodynamic Reboost(MXER)Project

The concept of electrodynamic tether propulsion has a number of attractive features and has been widely discussed for different applications. Different system designs have been proposed and compared during the last 10 years. In spite of this, the choice of proper design for any particular mission is a unique problem. Such characteristics of tether performance as system acceleration, efficiency, etc., should be calculated and compared on the basis of the known capability of a tether to collect electrical current. We discuss the choice of parameters for circular and tape tethers with regard to the Momentum-Exchange/Electrodynamic Reboost (MXER) tether project.

Electrodynamic Tether as a Thruster for LEO Mission Applications

Electrodynamic tether propulsion has a number of attractive features and has been widely discussed for different low earth orbit applications. Despite the commonality of application, the choice of the proper design for any particular mission is a unique problem. The flight trajectory, duration, available power and voltage, and drag force should be taken into consideration with other mission requirements. Characteristics of tether performance such as system acceleration and electrical efficiency should be calculated and assessed based on the system's capability to collect electrical current. We discuss the choice of parameters for circular, tape, and grid-sphere tether anodes and their applicability to International Space Station (ISS) reboost and Momentum Exchange Electrodynamic Reboost (MXER) applications.

Grid-Sphere Current Collection in View of the TSS-1, TSS-1R Mission Results

Passive end-body contactors have been validated in space and provide a simple, effective and robust means of current collection at the positive terminal of an electrodynamic tether system. The grid-sphere has been first suggested by Stone and Gierow, [2001] as the end body that has distinct advantages, compare to solid sphere, lower dynamic drag and higher current-to-mass ratio. This paper presents the estimation of upper limit of current collection by grid-sphere that takes into account the orbital grid-sphere motion, and the ions production inside the grid-sphere. We review the current collection of Tethered Satellite System (TSS-1) flight and of the TSS-1R flights results and suggest how to incorporate them into the grid-sphere current collection estimations. The potential distribution inside the grid-sphere and the potential distribution outside the solid sphere for the same system parameters are calculated. Assuming that the grid- sphere is characterized by the transparency alpha, equal approximately to the ratio of the part of the sphere surface without the mesh to it's total surface, the upper limit of it's current collection is estimated.

Scattering Efficiency of High-Voltage Tethers in Space

Several concepts have been proposed to remediate the effect of artificial Radiation Belts (RB) in Space Plasma. Among them is the high-voltage electrostatic tether remediation technique. Preliminary analysis that has been carried out later by several groups showed, that this technique could be very efficient and is able to control relativistic electron energies of artificial RB population. The relativistic electron population is the one of the most important topic of US Space Weather studies and very dangerous to many civilian and military space assets, it is also important to study some fundamentals of scattering efficiency of high-voltage tethers in space plasma. There are several fundamental issues that should be examined in order to validate high-voltage tether artificial RB remediation concept. The most critical among them are: power consumption, the size and stability of the plasma sheath around the tether, and scattering efficiency of this high-voltage system that is ultimately related with the plasma sheath size. This study would be focused on the scattering process itself and artificial RB remediation assuming that power consumption and the size of the plasma sheath are known.

Analysis of Bare-Tether Systems as a Thruster for MXER Studies

The concept of the electrodynamic propulsion has a number of attractive features and has been widely discussed for different applications. A number of system designs have been proposed and compared during the last ten years. In spite of this, the choice of the proper design, for a specific mission, is far from evident. Such characteristics of tether performance as system acceleration, efficiency, etc. should be calculated and compared. The code that calculates the current for bare and partly insulated tethers with circular (wire) and rectangle (tape) cross-sections is presented. It takes into account the corrections to the OML current due to the tether cross-section geometry and the magnetic field produced by the tether current. There are two options in this code: for current calculation with the prescribed energy supply and with the prescribed end-point potential. This permits to calculate the parameters characterizing tether performance. Results for the current calculated for tethers with different designs for the currently proposed Momentum exchange Electrodynamic Reboost (MXER) Tether System are presented.

Electrodynamic Tether as a Thruster for MXER Studies

Electrodynamic propulsion based on the interaction of a conducting tether with the background magnetic field can be implemented across a range of system designs. Bare tethers, bare and insulated tethers with a balloon termination, and insulated tethers with a grid-sphere termination have been proposed for different applications. Electrodynamic tether as a thruster is currently proposed for the Momentum exchange Electrodynamic Reboost (MXER) Tether System that currently under development at NASA Marshal Space Flight Center. The choice of a tether design for a specific mission is based on the analysis of tether system performance. Different parameters describing tether performance such as system acceleration and efficiency can be calculated if the current distribution along the tether at the satellite trajectory is known. The code calculating the tether current collection for the bare and partly insulated tethers with the circular (wire) and rectangular (tape) cross-sections operating in the thrust mode has been developed and applied for MXER that is expected to operate in an equatorial elliptical orbit with perigee in the altitude range of 300-500km and apogee between 5000-8000km. The collected current is calculated as a function of the satellite velocity and the Earth s magnetic field, plasma parameters (plasma density and temperature), and tether parameters (tether length, the length of the bare segment, the type and the dimensions of the cross-section). The deviation of the collected current from the OML model due to the tether thickness and self-induced magnetic field (for tether with a circular cross-section) is taken into account.

The Role of the Heavy Ions in the Wave Magnetospheric Phenomena

This talk will emphasize the role of the heavy ions in the number of wave-particle interaction magnetospheric processes. In particular, we will discuss some of the experimental and theoretical studies that have investigated the role of the heavy ions (mainly He(+) and O(+)) in generation and propagation of electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves and their contribution to the heating of magnetospheric electrons and ions. The more recent studies have also shown that the heavy ions can greatly contribute to a generation of lower hybrid waves, ring current precipitation phenomena, and the overall energy redistribution in the inner magnetosphere. Using newly developed 2.5-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we study the energization and nonlinear coupling of different plasma waves in the presence of the heavy ions. We have shown that the high frequency wave modes critically depend on the heavy ion density and irrespective of the driven wave modes, both the light and heavy ions undergo significant transverse acceleration. But for the large heavy-ion densities, even the electrons are significantly accelerated in the parallel direction by the waves below the LH frequency.

Mechanisms for the Dissipation of Alfven Waves in Near-Earth Space Plasma

Alfven waves are a major mechanism for the transport of electromagnetic energy from the distant part of the magnetosphere to the near-Earth space. This is especially true for the auroral and polar regions of the Earth. However, the mechanisms for their dissipation have remained illusive. One of the mechanisms is the formation of double layers when the current associated with Alfven waves in the inertial regime interact with density cavities, which either are generated nonlinearly by the waves themselves or are a part of the ambient plasma turbulence. Depending on the strength of the cavities, weak and strong double layers could form. Such double layers are transient; their lifetimes depend on that of the cavities. Thus they impulsively accelerate ions and electrons. Another mechanism is the resonant absorption of broadband Alfven- wave noise by the ions at the ion cyclotron frequencies. But this resonant absorption may not be possible for the very low frequency waves, and it may be more suited for electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves. A third mechanism is the excitation of secondary waves by the drifts of electrons and ions in the Alfven wave fields. It is found that under suitable conditions, the relative drifts between different ion species and/or between electrons and ions are large enough to drive lower hybrid waves, which could cause transverse accelerations of ions and parallel accelerations of electrons. This mechanism is being further studied by means of kinetic simulations using 2.5- and 3-D particle-in-cell codes. The ongoing modeling efforts on space weather require quantitative estimates of energy inputs of various kinds, including the electromagnetic energy. Our studies described here contribute to the methods of determining the estimates of the input from ubiquitous Alfven waves.

A Self-Consistent Model of the Interacting Ring Current Ions and Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Waves, Initial Results: Waves and Precipitating Fluxes

Initial results from a newly developed model of the interacting ring current ions and ion cyclotron waves are presented. The model is based on the system of two kinetic equations: one equation describes the ring current ion dynamics, and another equation describes wave evolution. The system gives a self-consistent description of the ring current ions and ion cyclotron waves in a quasilinear approach. These equations for the ion phase space distribution function and for the wave power spectral density were solved on aglobal magnetospheric scale undernonsteady state conditions during the 2-5 May 1998 storm. The structure and dynamics of the ring current proton precipitating flux regions and the ion cyclotron wave-active zones during extreme geomagnetic disturbances on 4 May 1998 are presented and discussed in detail.
