Lorentz symmetry in ghost-free massive gravity

The role of Lorentz symmetry in ghost-free massive gravity is studied, emphasizing features emerging in approximately Minkowski spacetime. The static extrema and saddle points of the potential are determined and their Lorentz properties identified. Solutions preserving Lorentz invariance and ones breaking four of the six Lorentz generators are constructed. Locally, globally, and absolutely stable Lorentz-invariant extrema are found to exist for certain parameter ranges of the potential. Gravitational waves in the linearized theory are investigated. Deviations of the fiducial metric from the Minkowski metric are shown to lead to pentarefringence of the five wave polarizations, which can include superluminal modes and subluminal modes with negative energies in certain observer frames. The Newton limit of ghost-free massive gravity is explored. The propagator is constructed and used to obtain the gravitational potential energy between two point masses. Here, the result extends the Fierz-Pauli limit to include corrections generically breaking both rotation and boost invariance.

Searches for beyond-Riemann gravity

Many effective field theories describing gravity cannot arise from an underlying theory based on Riemann geometry or its extensions to include torsion and nonmetricity but may instead emerge from another geometry or may have a nongeometric basis. The Lagrange density for a broad class of such theories is investigated. The action for fermions coupled to gravity is linearized about a Minkowski background and is found to include terms describing small deviations from Lorentz invariance and gravitational gauge invariance. The corresponding nonrelativistic hamiltonian is derived at second order in the fermion momentum. The implications for laboratory experiments and astrophysical observations with fermions are studied, with primary focus on anomalous spin-gravity couplings. First constraints on some coefficients are extracted from existing data obtained via measurements at different potentials, comparisons of gravitational accelerations, interferometric methods, and investigations of gravitational bound states. As a result, some prospects for future experimental studies are discussed.

Backgrounds in gravitational effective field theory

Effective field theories describing gravity coupled to matter are investigated, allowing for operators of arbitrary mass dimension. Terms violating local Lorentz and diffeomorphism invariance while preserving internal gauge symmetries are included. The theoretical framework for violations of local Lorentz and diffeomorphism invariance and associated conceptual issues are discussed, including transformations in curved and approximately flat spacetimes, the treatment of various types of backgrounds, the implications of symmetry breaking, and the no-go constraints for explicit violation in Riemann geometry. Furthermore, techniques are presented for the construction of effective operators, and the possible terms in the gravity, gauge, fermion, and scalar sectors are classified and enumerated. Explicit expressions are obtained for terms containing operators of mass dimension six or less in the effective action for General Relativity coupled to the Standard Model of particle physics. Special cases considered include Einstein-Maxwell effective field theories and the limit with only scalar coupling constants.
