Improved Simulations of Astrophysical Plasmas: Computation of New Atomic Data

Our research program is designed to carry out state-of-the-art atomic physics calculations crucial to advancing our understanding of fundamental astrophysical problems. We redress the present inadequacies in the atomic data base along two important areas: dielectronic recombination and inner-shell photoionization and multiple electron ejection/Auger fluorescence therefrom. All of these data are disseminated to the astrophysical community in the proper format for implementation in spectral simulation code.

Double troughs in broad absorption line quasars and Ly-alpha-N V line-locking

It was investigated whether the double trough (DT) structure in the mean C IV BAL trough reported by Weymann et al. (1991) is real or due to statistical fluctuations of BAL troughs over random outflow velocities in a limited sample. A sample of 72 BAL QSOs with C IV BAL troughs was analyzed. It is found that only 22 percent of the sample explicitly exhibits the DT feature; when present the DTs are deep. A Monte Carlo simulation of the mean C IV BAL suggests that the DT feature is real at only the 95-98 percent level.

Low-ionization broad absorption lines in quasars

The absorption line properties of six Mg II broad absorption line quasars (BALQs) are examined using a BALQ sample of Weymann et al. (1991). It is found that Al III absorption is always stronger than Al II absorption; C IV absorption tends to be very deep and broad; and low ionization absorption tends to be narrower and lie at the low velocity end of the C IV trough. The results indicate that the outflows in Mg II BALQs are not accelerating monotonically. It is shown that a hot cloud-confining outflow can be decelerated by adding thick absorbing clouds provided the ionization parameters of these clouds are high. It is argued that the MG II BALQ phenomenon might be a manifestation of a quasar's efforts to expel a thick shroud of gas and dust.

Imaging of the Wolf-Rayet galaxy He 2-10

We present B, V, and emission-line CCD images of the Wolf-Rayet galaxy He 2-10. The broad band images reveal the galaxy to consist of two starburst regions at the center of an elliptical stellar envelope about 10 times their size, with a major axis diameter of approximately 3.8 kpc. Previous imaging detected only the starburst regions, leading to the erroneous description of the object as an interacting pair. Morphologically, He 2-10 resembles the majority of blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDGs), some of which also show Wolf-Rayet features in their spectra. The lack of nearby neighbors to He 2-10 suggests that its star formation is proceeding stochastically, rather than as the result of interaction, and its morphological similarity to other BCDGs suggests that all such galaxies may pass through a Wolf-Rayet phase. The similarity of the outer regions of He 2-10 and other BCDGs to normal dwarf ellipticals also supports models in which the former evolve into the latter.

Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Spectrograph and ground-based observations of the broad absorption line quasar 0226-1024

Faint Object Spectrograph data from the Hubble Space Telescope of the broad absorption line quasar 0226-1024 have revealed the presence of 8-10 absorbing ions between 680 and 1000 A (restframe): C III, N III, N IV, O III, O IV, O VI, S V, S VI, possibly Ne VIII, and possibly O V* arising from a metastable excited state. We also present ground-based optical observations of the broad line troughs for the following ions: H I, C IV, N V, Si IV, and possibly Fe III, S IV, P V, and C III* (also arising from a metastable excited state). The results of this fit are used to estimate the absorbing ionic column densities. There is evidence that the broad absorption line clouds are optically thick and either do not completely cover the continuum source or narrow unresolved lines are present.

Broad absorption-line time variability in the QSO CSO 203

We present spectroscopy of the BALQSO CSO 203 during four epochs over a 17-month time span. These data show three distinct levels in the broad absorption lines (BALs) of Si IV 1397A and C IV 1549A. We also note possible variations in the N V 1240A and Al III 1857A absorption troughs. A broad-band monitoring effort during this period shows that the continuum level remained constant to within 10 percent. We argue that the triggering mechanism for the absorption-line changes is most likely synchronous with the continuum source photons; however, no correlation with the central source has yet been found. The observed variations are consistent with changes in the ionization level in the broad absorption-line region (BALR). We discuss possible mechanisms for these changes and the implications for the structure of the BALR.

Ultraviolet and optical spectra of high-ionization Seyfert galaxies with narrow lines

Ultraviolet and optical spectra are presented for three unusual Seyfert galaxies (Mrk 1239, Mrk 42, and Mrk 493) that resemble Seyfert 1 galaxies in that they have strong high-ionization lines and strong nonstellar continua, but resemble Seyfert 2 galaxies in that the widths of their permitted lines are as narrow as the widths of their forbidden lines. The He II lambda 1640 and He II lambda 4686 lines are used to determine an upper limit to the reddening experienced by the emission lines. Published optical data show that these particular high-ionization narrow-line (HINL) Seyferts have low lambda 5007 H beta ratios and strong Fe II emission, which suggest the presence of high-density regions. The low Lalpha/H-beta ratios in these objects indicate that high-density clouds are indeed present, and, like the broad-line region clouds in Seyfert 1 galaxies, these clouds have large optical depths with partially ionized zones. Overall, the line ratios and continuum fluxes of these particular HINL Seyferts are indistinguishable from those of broad-lined Seyfert 1 galaxies.

Ultraviolet and optical spectroscopy of NGC 5548 and the nature of the broad-line region

The structure of the broad-line region in NGC 5548 is investigated by analysis of the integrated flux and profile variations observed in optical and ultraviolet emission lines. It is shown that the observations do not appear to be consistent with models which identify the variable part of the emission lines with a simple rotating disk structure. The variable continuum, and integrated emission-line fluxes are highly correlated and suggest a small broad-line region (18 light days = 5 x 10 to the 16th cm), although the size of the line-emitting region is not well-determined. At least some of the broad emission arises in a component which at times appears very prominently and distinctly in difference spectra. This emission component appears to arise in a region which is physically distinct from the rest of the broad-line region. Although the integrated fluxes in the various optical and ultraviolet emission lines seem to vary together, there clearly are differences between the profiles of various lines, which suggests that there is at least some ionization stratification within the broad-line region.

The evolution of the radio emission from Kepler's Supernova remnant

High-resolution radio maps of Kepler's Supernova remnant (SNR) using all four arrays of the VLA have been obtained at wavelengths of 20 and 6 cm. They show the complete structure of the remnant; all features are resolved with sizes greater than about 2 arcsec, and the relative brightness of the smooth component near the center is about 1/4 the brightness of the rim. The results have been compared with earlier more limited data to measure changes in the remnant over a four-year time span. The SNR is expanding with a mean rate of R proportional to t exp 0.50 with considerable variations around the shell. Values range from R proportional to t exp 0.35 on the bright northern rim to R proportional to t exp 0.65 on the eastern part of the shell. The measurements are consistent with expansion into a variable circumstellar medium.
