IUE observations of Beta Pictoris - An IRAS candidate for a proto-planetary system

The results of a preliminary analysis of high-resolution and low-resolution UV spectra of the edge-on extended-disk shell star Beta Pic, obtained with the IUE SWP and LWR instruments on November 5-6, 1984, are reported and compared with IRAS and ground-based observations. No selective UV extinction is detected, and the fine structure of the Fe II and C I absorption lines and the presence of metastable Fe II lines are considered consistent with a circumstellar nebula or extended envelope of density greater than 1000/cu cm and electron density (1-10) x 10 to the 8th/cu cm or less at 1-2 AU from the central star. The possibility that the extended orbiting disk is clumpy, as observed by Smith and Terrile (1985), is discussed.

Ultraviolet spectroscopic observations of HD 77581(Vela X-1 = 4U 0900-40)

Ultraviolet spectra of HD 77581 obtained with the IUE satellite in December 1982 and January 1983 are analyzed. The effective temperature is found to be 25,000 + or - 1000 K by comparing its photospheric absorption lines with those in four well-studied B0-B1 supergiants. The distance of 1.9 + or - 0.2 kpc is derived from its luminosity log L/solar-L = +5.53, which is obtained from the effective temperature and from its radius. Circumstellar matter is detected not only in the C IV and Si IV lines but also in Al III, Fe III, C II, and Mg II lines. Profiles of the C IV and Si IV lines show a similar dependence on the orbital phase as in 1978. Two distinct sharp components are found in the shortward-shifted absorptions of the Al III and Fe III lines. Once component is present only in the second half of the orbital period, and its origin may be a 'trailing wake' behind the neutron star. The other component is seen all over the period, and it can be interpreted as originating in a cool expanding region of gas in the orbital plane.

Nitric oxide profile from 7 to 32 km

An analysis is given of some results of the LIMS experiment, launched on the Nimbus 7 satellite on October 24, 1978 for the purpose of sounding the middle atmosphere composition and structure. One of the LIMS channels was centered spectrally in the 6 micron region to measure vertical profiles and the global distribution of NO2 mixing ratio. The data reveal that NO2 is highly variable with altitude, latitude, longitude and time. Steep latitudinal gradients are observed in high latitude winter ('the NO2 cliff') when a wave number one pattern exists in the geopotential height field. The daytime gradient under these conditions is less than that for the night. The summer hemisphere column amount is considerably greater (by a factor of about 2) than in the winter hemisphere. The largest mixing ratios occur at 4 mb at night (about 20 ppbv) and 9 mb in the day (about 7 ppbv) and the latitude region of the peak mixing ratio is skewed toward the Southern Hemisphere. The mixing ratio variability is greater at night (by a factor of about 2 to 3) than in the day and there are significant long-term changes revealed by mixing ratio time series analyses on a pressure vs time grid.

Evidence for a supersonic turbulent velocity gradient in the outer photosphere of the supergiant alpha Cygni (A2Ia)

The balloon-borne UV Stellar Spectrometer's high resolution, near-UV spectra of the supergiant Alpha Cyg are subjected to analysis in order to determine the average microturbulent line-of-sight velocity component. A value of 15.0 + or - 0.5 km/sec is obtained, which is close to the 13.7 km/sec local sound velocity, and is consistent with the view that shock waves are the dominant structure in the outer photosphere of Deneb, so that shock wave dissipation determines the thermal structure of the photosphere.

Observations of Local Interstellar Mg I and Mg II

Copernicus and IUE observations of 5 stars within 50 pc of the Sun were combined to study the ionization of magnesium in the local interstellar medium (LISM). The high resolution Copernicus spectrometer was used to detect interstellar MG I 2852 in the spectra of alpha Gru, alpha Eri, and alpha Lyr, while placing upper limits on Mg I in the spectra of alpha CMa and alpha PsA. Observations of Mg II 2795, 2802 for these stars were also obtained with IUE and Copernicus. The column densities of Mg I and Mg II are used to place constraints on the temperature of the LISM.

Coordinated multifrequency observations of the BL Lacertae objects Mrk 180 and Mrk 501

The continuous spectra of the nearby BL Lac objects Mrk 180 and Mrk 501 have been investigated by making coordinated observations at X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, and radio wavelengths. The observations were planned in order to obtain single-epoch snapshots, or time-frozen spectra, of the emission at many different wavelengths. The spectra were fitted with spherically symmetric, synchrotron self-Compton models and relativistic jet models with relaxed assumptions of spherical geometry and homogeneity and allowance for relativistic motion. It is found that these models provide accurate fits to the observed spectra and tighter constraints on the physical parameters. These models are also not dependent on uncertain source size and synchrotron break frequency.

Observations of eight close binaries with the Einstein Observatory

Eight close binaries were observed with the Imaging Proportional Counter aboard the Einstein Observatory. The binaries R Ara, Zeta Aur, RZ Cas, 31 Cyg, Delta Lib, U Sge, RZ Sct, and RW Tau all show strong indications of active mass flow in their ground-based and/or ultraviolet spectra. The systems R Ara, RZ Cas, 31 Cyg, Delta Lib, and U Sge were detected as X-ray sources while only upper limits on the X-ray luminosities of Zeta Aur, RZ Sct, and RW Tau could be determined. Nondetection of the latter three is probably attributable to their distance. With the exception of 31 Cyg which has an X-ray luminosity of about 10 to the 32nd erg/s, the detected sources have X-ray luminosities in the range 10 to the 30th-31st erg/s. These luminosities are approximately equal to those observed for single stars of similar spectral types. It appears that the X-ray luminosity of 31 Cyg is at least 60 times higher than that of Zeta Aur.

LOX/LH2 propulsion system for launch vehicle upper stage, test results

The test results of small LOX/LH2 engines for two propulsion systems, a pump fed system and a pressure fed system are reported. The pump fed system has the advantages of higher performances and higher mass fraction. The pressure fed system has the advantages of higher reliability and relative simplicity. Adoption of these cryogenic propulsion systems for upper stage of launch vehicle increases the payload capability with low cost. The 1,000 kg thrust class engine was selected for this cryogenic stage. A thrust chamber assembly for the pressure fed propulsion system was tested. It is indicated that it has good performance to meet system requirements.

Optically-thick, highly-variable plasma in interacting binaries

The interacting binaries HD 207739 and R Arae were observed by IUE. The ultraviolet spectrum of HD 207739 undergoes complex variations in both the lines and the continuum. Considerable circumstellar matter is present; R Arae (B9p + ?) exhibits SiIV, CIV and even NV absorption features. Both the lines and continuum are variable. An unusual secondary eclipse which is deeper in the ultraviolet than in the visible is present near phase 0.6. The CII line has a P cygni profile with emission present at all observed phases. These systems are probably in a relatively short-lived phase of evolution which is not often observed.

Egress spectra of the new eclipsing supergiant 22 Vulpeculae

The G-type primary in the single-lined spectroscopic binary 22 Vul (HD 192713, Gp3 Ib-II, period 249 days) was found by IUE to eclipse its recently identified B9 main sequence companion. The system thus joins Zeta Aurigae systems in which a hot dwarf provides a probe of extended atmospheres by going behind a cool supergiant. The IUE data were obtained at scattered dates following two conjunctions. Outside of eclipse, a wind from the system with terminal velocity of 300 k/sec is conspicuous in the Mg II lines. Enhanced Fe II absorption seen well away from geometrical eclipse implies an extensive envelope around the G star. There is a close correspondence between the 22 Vul spectra and those of interacting binaries, suggesting common properties due to relatively dense, warm plasmas in these systems.

The 1982 eclipse of 31 Cygni

UBV photometry and optical-UV spectroscopy of the primary eclipse of the long period Zeta Aurigae-like system 31 Cygni are reported. The precise timings made possible by the photometry imply that the spectral features could be due to an accretion shock associated with a hot star embedded in an extended chromosphere surrounding the red supergiant. The data also suggest an extended clumpy structure to the atmosphere of the late-type supergiant in the binary.

Very recent IUE observations of 2 BL Lacertae orbits

Spectroscopic observations of two BL Lacertae objects consisting of 2 spectra of 1218+304 and 12 spectra of MrK 421 are presented. Data were generated by the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) and HEAO 1. The former BL object was never before observed with IUE, possibly because it is very faint, but the fact that it is an X-ray source, and a highly variable one, makes it particularly interesting. MrK 421 was observed many times before with IUE as part of a continuing monitoring program. The present observations indicate an intensity decrease of approximately 25% on a timescale of one month, with little or no associated spectral change. With one exception, the spectra of these two BL objects show no discrete features, and the continua are well fit by the power law models. The one exception is a long exposure of MrK 421 which showed a broad emission feature near 1580 A. The validity of this feature is not yet established.

Variable, optically thick, hot plasma observed in interacting binaries

Recent International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) observations of two interacting binaries, R Arae and HD 207739 are reported. The ultraviolet spectra indicate the presence of optically-thick, variable hot plasma in those binary systems. These two binaries may belong to a class of binaries that are currently undergoing a rarely observed and probably short-lived phase in their evolution. Their properties are compared with those of two other interacting binaries, U Cephei and Beta Lyrae.

Variability of the ultraviolet spectrum of BL Lacertae objects

Attention is given to repeated observations of the two nearby BL Lac objects, Mrk 421 and PKS 0521-36, comparing the temporal behavior of their continuum in the 1300-3000 A range with that observed in intrinsically bright BL Lac objects and in Seyfert galaxies. Also discussed are the emission lines in the UV and optical spectrum of PKS 0521-36. It is suggested that the difference in variability pattern between BL Lac objects and Seyfert galaxies may be due to differences in the properties of the nonthermal continuum related to differences in accretion regimes, although it is more probably due to the presence of different continuum components in Seyfert galaxies. In BL Lac objects, the UV spectrum is likely to be synchrotron radiation from an optically thin source.

Comments on the ultraviolet spectrum of gamma(2) Velorum

A table of spectral features, including narrow, very broad, and 'photospheric' lines, in the ultraviolet spectrum of the Wolf-Rayet binary gamma(2) Velorum is given together with radial velocities at phase 0.99. The very broad lines display P Cygni profiles. Ten weak absorption features are tentatively assigned to blends of numerous lines of Fe IV, and three other similar features are possibly due to Fe V blends. These iron lines appear to be associated with the Wolf-Rayet component. The narrow features are present with a wide range of ionization. The Si IV, and probably C IV, features are circumstellar, while the other narrow absorptions are either interstellar or possibly a combination of interstellar and circumstellar. A model is proposed for the outer layers of the extended envelope of the Wolf-Rayet star.
