Observations of the stellar Mg II resonance doublet at 2795 and 2802 A.

Spectrophotometry of the Mg II resonance doublet at 2795.5 and 2802.7 A has been performed for five stars with a balloon-borne telescope and spectrometer. Spectral resolution attained was between 0.25 and 0.5 A. A description of the payload and flight operations is given. In beta Lyr the Mg II doublet displayed P Cygni characteristics, while in gamma Lyr the doublet was observed only in absorption. The star beta Cas shows broad overlapping Mg II absorption lines with possible weak emission at the line bottom. In alpha CMi, both components of the doublet are seen in emission at the bottom of the broad absorption feature. The Mg II doublet in alpha Ori is entirely in emission, with each component showing distinct self-reversal.

On the mass-luminosity relation.

The results of a least-squares study of the mass-luminosity relation for eclipsing and visual binary stars consisting of main sequence components are presented. Two methods are discussed. First, the values of the coefficients A and B in the relation log M = A + BM sub BOL are determined. Then a technique which permits the determination of alpha and beta in the relation M = alpha L beta, when only the sum of the masses, and not the individual masses of each component, is known. The results and a comparison of the two methods are discussed. It is found that the following mass-luminosity relation represents the observational data satisfactorily: log M = 0.504 - 0.103 M sub BOL, -8 less than or equal to M sub BOL less than or equal to +10.5. A discussion of the data and of the possibility that separate mass-luminosity relations may exist for visual and eclipsing binaries is given. The possibility that more than one mass-luminosity relation is required in the range -8 less than or equal to M sub BOL less than or equal to +13 is also discussed.

Ultraviolet spectrophotometry of Arcturus from a rocket.

Results of spectrophotometric observations of Arcturus were obtained at the resolution of about 7 A in the wavelength region from 2700 to 4000 A from an Aerobee rocket. Although the payload was capable of obtaining observations shortward of 2700 A, the stellar flux was too weak for meaningful measurements below that wavelength. The most significant feature in the ultraviolet shortward of the atmospheric cutoff is an emission feature at 2800 A identified as the resonance line of the Mg II doublet.

OAO-2 observations of beta Lyrae and a provisional interpretation

Six-color ultraviolet photoelectric observations of beta Lyrae obtained with OAO-2 are presented. These observations, made at 1380, 1500, 1920, 2460, 2980 and 3330 A, represent the first truly continual coverage of the light changes of beta Lyrae during one orbital revolution and were obtained in November 1970. The photometric data are supplemented by spectral scans in the wavelength intervals 3800-1800 A and 2000-1050 A; the latter interval was scanned at 10 A resolution once during every OAO-2 orbit, i.e., about 100 minutes. Anomalous features, such as asymmetries and short and long term variations, are present in the light curves. A tentative discussion of solutions of the light curves is given.
