α decay of the neutron-deficient isotope At 190

The alpha decay of the neutron-deficient 190 At isotope was observed following the 103 Rh( 90 Zr, 3n) 190 At reaction at Argonne National Laboratory. The reaction products were separated from the beam using the Argonne Gas-Filled Analyzer and implanted into a double-sided Si strip detector. The spatial and temporal correlations between implanted nuclei and subsequent α decays towards the known daughter isotope 186 Bi were used to identify and characterize 190 At nuclei. In this paper, two possible decay scenarios are proposed for the 190 At → 186 Bi decay.

𝛽 decay of 36 Mg and 36 Al: Identification of a 𝛽-decaying isomer in 36 Al

The level structure of 36 Al has been studied via 𝛽 decay of 36 Mg at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) and the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL). A long-lived isomer in 36 Al was identified which decays by 𝛽 to an excited state of 36 Si. The ground state and the isomeric state of 36 Al were found to populate different energy levels of 36 Si. Furthermore, the results from the two data sets in the present work complement each other. Configuration interaction calculations performed with the FSU shell-model Hamiltonians provide reasonable descriptions to the experimental observations and offer insight into future improvements of the theoretical interpretation.

Experimental study of the S 38 excited level scheme

Information on the 38 S level scheme was expanded through experimental work utilizing a fusion-evaporation reaction and in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy. Prompt γ-ray transitions were detected by the Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking Array (GRETINA) and recoiling 38 S residues were selected by the Fragment Mass Analyzer (FMA). Tools based on machine-learning techniques were developed and deployed for the first time in order to enhance the unique selection of 38S residues and identify any associated γ-ray transitions. The new level information, including the extension of the even-spin yrast sequence through J π =8( + ), was interpreted in terms of a basic single-particle picture as well shell-model calculations which incorporated the empirically derived FSU interaction. A comparison between the properties of the yrast states in the even-Z, N = 22 isotones from Z = 14 to 20, and for 36 Si– 38 S in particular, was also presented with an emphasis on the role and influence of the neutron 1 p 3/2 orbital on the structure in the region.

Triaxiality and the nature of low-energy excitations in Ge 76

The deformation properties of the low-lying states in 76 Ge have been investigated following a safe energy Coulomb excitation measurement with the GRETINA tracking array and CHICO2 heavy-ion counter at the ATLAS accelerator facility at Argonne National Laboratory. A comprehensive set of transition and static E2 matrix elements were extracted from the measured differential Coulomb cross-sections, and compared with results of configuration interaction shell-model calculations and computations carried out within the framework of the generalized triaxial rotor model. The remarkable agreement between the calculated and experimental data supports a near-maximum triaxial deformation for the ground state of 76 Ge. Additionally, the degree of softness of the asymmetry in 76 Ge and 76 Se was investigated using rotational invariants generated from configuration interaction shell-model wave functions computed with the jj44b and JUN45 effective interactions. The resulting invariants are shown to be consistent with a stiff triaxial deformation in 76 Ge and a predominantly soft triaxial potential for 76 Se, in agreement with the conclusions of recent works by this collaboration.

Improving fission-product decay data for reactor applications: part I—decay heat

Effort has been expended to assess the relative merits of undertaking further decay-data measurements of the main fission-product contributors to the decay heat of neutron-irradiated fissionable fuel and related actinides by means of Total Absorption Gamma-ray Spectroscopy (TAGS - sometimes abbreviated to TAS) and Discrete Gamma-ray Spectroscopy (DGS). This review has been carried out following similar work performed under the auspices of OECD/WPEC-Subgroup 25 (2005–2007) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (2009, 2014), and various highly relevant TAGS measurements completed as a consequence of such assessments. Here, we present our recommendations for new decay-data evaluations, along with possible requirements for total absorption and discrete high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy studies that cover approximately 120 fission products and various isomeric states.
