The third Uhuru catalog of X-ray sources

A new edition of the catalog of X-ray sources observed with Uhuru is presented. About 125 days of data have been analyzed for the 3U catalog, yielding a total of 161 X-ray sources. The distribution of sources is similar to that obtained for earlier editions of this catalog. Location error regions for many of the sources previously listed in the 2U catalog have been significantly reduced in size.

Long and short arc altitude determination for GEOS-C

The accuracy with which the GEOS-C altitude may be estimated over long (7 day) and short (40 minute) orbital arcs is investigated. Over the long are excellent agreement was attained between a simulation of the orbit determination process and a covariance analysis. Both approaches yielded RMS altitude errors of about 1.5 meters over the Caribbean calibration area and approximately 7.5 meters overall. The geopotential was identified as the largest error source. For the short arc, the covariance analysis revealed that the propagated altitude error is linearly dependent upon station survey component errors which are also the largest source of altitude errors. An Appendix contains the mathematics of covariance analysis as applied to orbit determination.

X-ray spectrum of the Tycho supernova

Uhuru satellite data combined with Wisconsin rocket data suggest that the X-ray spectrum of the Tycho supernova remnant is composite and includes a thermal as well as a nonthermal component, the latter being an extension of the radio spectrum. Attempts have been made to fit the low-energy observations (thermal component) with the Tucker and Koren calculations for the solar corona.

Pulsed high-energy gamma rays from the Crab Nebula.

Review of recorded data on the pulsed radiation detected by the Cornell 100-inch gas-Cerenkov gamma-ray telescope within 1 degree of the Crab Nebula in direction, at hundreds of MeV up to more than 1 GeV, coincident in time with optical pulses from NP 0532. A main pulse and a secondary pulse are shown to contain about an equal number of events and display evidence of being narrower than at lower energies. There is weak evidence for further pulse structure in the interval between these two peaks, and also for an unmodulated gamma-ray component about equal to the time-averaged pulsed flux.
