Analysis of pilot-aircraft performance and reliability via the application of man-machine models

The present approach to analytic modeling, which utilizes human response theory together with modern control theory, is discussed. Analytic modeling of human performance has progressed to the point where it can be used with some confidence in the design and performance analysis of man-machine systems. An example of its use in helping design a flight director for the hover control of a VTOL vehicle is described. How the method could be used for analysis of human response to system failure is sketched.

A predictive pilot model for STOL aircraft landing

An optimal control approach has been used to model pilot performance during STOL flare and landing. The model is used to predict pilot landing performance for three STOL configurations, each having a different level of automatic control augmentation. Model predictions are compared with flight simulator data. It is concluded that the model can be effective design tool for studying analytically the effects of display modifications, different stability augmentation systems, and proposed changes in the landing area geometry.

Analytic evaluation of display requirements for approach to landing

A pilot-vehicle-display model is used to study information and display requirements and the effects on system performance and reliability of pilot-induced randomness, wind gusts, configurational changes, etc. A brief description of a control theoretic systems model is given and its use and validity are demonstrated by applying it in a piloted approach to landing situation. The analysis procedure assumes that the vehicle dynamics are represented by linearized equations of motion.

Prediction and analysis of human performance in a VTOL hover task

An optimal control model is used to predict pilot performance in a series of longitudinal hovering tasks. Configurational changes are considered that alter significantly the system response to both control and disturbance inputs. Model predictions of mean-squared performance are compared with measurements obtained in an independent experimental study of the task. In addition, the optimal control model is used to predict describing functions that correspond to the loop closing pilot transfer functions frequently employed in classical multiloop manual control analyses.

A control theoretic model for piloted approach to landing.

Using manned vehicle systems analysis, a model for manual approach to landing is developed. This model is developed and applied in the specific context of a problem of analytical evaluation of a pictorial display for longitudinal control of glide path errors. This makes it possible to discuss the model in concrete terms, and the availability of experimental data provides opportunities for checking the theoretical results obtained.

Analytic evaluation of display requirements for approach to landing

A computerized analysis procedure, based on a control theoretic model of the human pilot, is used to evaluate display requirements for longitudinal control in the landing approach. The display employed a digitally generated, perspective runway image with a superimposed artificial horizon for pitch indication. System performance measures are obtained for the approach phase of a light aircraft and a DC-8; predictions are made as to the effects of several display modifications. It is found that augmenting the basic display with glide slope reference bars and a velocity aim point yields adequate performance in calm air. Under moderate turbulence, the augmented display appears to be adequate for a DC-8 approach but not for a light aircraft.
