Correlative multimodal chemical imaging via machine learning

Machine learning approach can combine mass spectral imaging (MSI) techniques, one with low spatial resolution but intact molecular spectra and the other with nanometer spatial resolution but fragmented molecular signatures, to predict molecular MSI spectra with submicron spatial resolution. The machine learning approach can perform transformations on the spectral image data of the two MSI techniques to reduce dimensionality, and using a correlation technique, find relationships between the transformed spectral image data. The determined relationships can be used to generate MSI spectra of desired resolution.

Two-Dimensional Siloxene Nanosheets: Impact of Morphology and Purity on Electrochemistry

Two-dimensional (2D) siloxene (Si 6 O 3 H 6 ) has shown promise as a negative electrode material for Li-ion batteries due to its high gravimetric capacity and superior mechanical properties under (de)lithiation compared to bulk Si. Here, in this work, we prepare purified siloxene nanosheets through the removal of bulk Si contaminants, use ultrasonication to control the lateral size and thickness of the nanosheets, and probe the effects of the resulting morphology and purity on the electrochemistry. The thin siloxene nanosheets formed after 4 h of ultrasonication deliver an average capacity of 810 mA h/g under a 1000 mA/g rate over 200 cycles with a capacity retention of 76%. Interestingly, the purified siloxene shows lower initial capacity but superior capacity retention over extended cycling. The 2D morphology benefit is illustrated where the parent siloxene nanosheet morphology and structure were largely maintained based on operando optoelectrochemistry, in situ Raman, ex situ scanning electron microscopy, and ex situ transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, the purified siloxene-based electrode free from crystalline Si impurity experiences the least expansion upon (de)lithiation as visualized by cross-section electron microscopy of samples recovered post-cycling.

Vertically assembled nanosheet networks for high-density thick battery electrodes

As one of the prevailing energy storage systems, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become an essential pillar in electric vehicles (EVs) during the past decade, contributing significantly to a carbon-neutral future. However, the complete transition to electric vehicles requires LIBs with yet higher energy and power densities. Here, we propose an effective methodology via controlled nanosheet self-assembly to prepare low-tortuosity yet high-density and high-toughness thick electrodes. By introducing a delicate densification in a three-dimensionally interconnected nanosheet network to maintain its vertical architecture, facile electron and ion transports are enabled despite their high packing density. This dense and thick electrode is capable of delivering a high volumetric capacity >1,600 mAh cm −3 , with an areal capacity up to 32 mAh cm −2 , which is among the best reported in the literature. The high-performance electrodes with superior mechanical and electrochemical properties demonstrated in this work provide a potentially universal methodology in designing advanced battery electrodes with versatile anisotropic properties.

Unveiling Charge Transport and Degradation Mechanisms of Aqueous Zn|α-MoO 3 Batteries in Conventional Concentration and Water-in-Salt Electrolytes: A Multi-Modal In Situ and Operando Study

Herein charge storage and transport properties are elucidated and cell degradation mechanisms of rechargeable aqueous Zn|alpha-MoO 3 batteries in three electrolyte systems (3 m ZnSO 4 , 3 m ZnCl 2 , and 30 m ZnCl 2 [12.5 m] water-in-salt (WIS)) are distinguished by a combination of in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), operando optoelectrochemistry, and operando energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDXRD). In conventional concentration 3 m electrolytes, in situ XRD and XAS, as well as ex situ scanning transmission electron microscopy data collectively support Zn 2+ as the primary charge carrier. In addition, these systems are susceptible to cathode dissolution, Zn corrosion coupled with the hydrogen evolution reaction, and the resultant formation of basic zinc salt phases. The multi-modal in situ and operando experimental analyses validate facile H+ intercalation and extraction in concentrated 30 m ZnCl 2 WIS electrolyte. Via operando EDXRD, reaction front and charge transport limitation during discharge and charge in the viscous WIS electrolyte are spatially tracked. Here this work provides new insight into the stability and degradation mechanisms of aqueous zinc batteries during static storage and upon dynamic cycling, and highlights the utility of in situ and operando techniques in understanding the superior stability of WIS electrolytes.

Progress Towards Extended Cycle Life Si-based Anodes: Investigation of Fluorinated Local High Concentration Electrolytes

Silicon (Si) anodes are promising candidates for Li-ion batteries due to their high specific capacity and low operating potential. Implementation has been challenged by the significant Si volume changes during (de)lithiation and associated growth/regrowth of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). In this report, fluorinated local high concentration electrolytes (FLHCEs) were designed such that each component of the electrolyte (solvent, salt, diluent) is fluorinated to modify the chemistry and stabilize the SEI of high (30%) silicon content anodes. FLHCEs were formulated to probe the electrolyte salt concentration and ratio of the fluorinated carbonate solvents to a hydrofluoroether diluent. Higher salt concentrations led to higher viscosities, conductivities, and contact angles on polyethylene separators. Electrochemical cycling of Si-graphite/NMC622 pouch cells using the FLHCEs delivered up to 67% capacity retention after 100 cycles at a C/3 rate. Post-cycling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses of the Si-graphite anodes indicated the FLHCEs formed a LiF rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). The findings show that the fluorinated local high concentration electrolytes contribute to stabilizing the Si-graphite electrode over extended cycling.

Tortuosity Engineering for Improved Charge Storage Kinetics in High-Areal-Capacity Battery Electrodes

The increasing demands of electronic devices and electric transportation necessitate lithium-ion batteries with simultaneous high energy and power capabilities. However, rate capabilities are often limited in high-loading electrodes due to the lengthy and tortuous ion transport paths with their electrochemical behaviors governed by complicated electrode architectures still elusive. Here, we report the electrode-level tortuosity engineering design enabling improved charge storage kinetics in high-energy electrodes. Both high areal capacity and high-rate capability can be achieved beyond the practical level of mass loadings in electrodes with vertically oriented architectures. The electrochemical properties in electrodes with various architectures were quantitatively investigated through correlating the characteristic time with tortuosity. The lithium-ion transport kinetics regulated by electrode architectures was further studied via combining the three-dimensional electrode architecture visualization and simulation. Finally, the tortuosity-controlled charge storage kinetics revealed in this study can be extended to general electrode systems and provide useful design consideration for next-generation high-energy/power batteries.
