Stable and rugged etalon for the Dynamics Explorer Fabry-Perot interferometer. II - Performance

The etalon is shown to remain stable to less than 5-m/sec equivalent wind over one orbit and less than 100 m/sec over several months in orbit. The thermal stability considerations for the highly stable etalon are discussed, including the passive thermal control used in flight. The various physical processes which give rise to drifts in the peak transmission wavelength are quantified, and the kinematic mount used to isolate the etalon from large incremental forces caused by changes in the thermal environment is presented. The performance of the etalon in its flight configuration is evaluated.

Neutral winds in the polar thermosphere as measured from Dynamics Explorer

Possibilities for experimental investigations related to the study of the dynamics of the thermosphere have been markedly improved by the new instrumentation deployed on the Dynamics Explorer Satellite (DE). The Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) on DE measures altitude profiles of the meridional component of the neutral wind below the spacecraft by remotely sensing the Doppler shift of the thermospheric O(1D). The Wind and Temperature Spectrometer (WATS) measures the in situ zonal component of the neutral wind by measuring the angle of arrival of the beam of neutral atoms entering the aperture to a mass spectrometer. A description is provided of data handling procedures, and the first results obtained by combining the data sets from the two instruments are presented. Acquisition and determination of neutral wind vectors from the remote (FPI) and in-situ (WATS) measurements requires careful handling of the data to ensure that the two components relate to the same volume of space.

Neutral winds in the polar thermosphere as measured from Dynamics Explorer

Remote sensing measurements of the meridional thermospheric neutral wind using the Fabry-Perot Interferometer on Dynamics Explorer have been combined with in-situ measurements of the zonal component using the Wind and Temperature Spectrometer on the same spacecraft. The two data sets with appropriate spatial phasing and averaging determine the vector wind along the track of the polar orbiting spacecraft. A study of fifty-eight passes over the Southern (sunlit) pole has enabled the average Universal Time dependence of the wind field to be determined for essentially a single solar local time cut. The results show the presence of a 'back-ground' wind field driven by solar EUV heating upon which is superposed a circulating wind field driven by high latitude momentum and energy sources.

The Fabry-Perot Interferometer on Dynamics Explorer

The Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) on Dynamics Explorer is a remote sensing instrument designed to measure the temperature, meridional wind and density of the metastable atoms O(1S) and O(1D), and the ion O(plus)(2P) in the thermosphere. The measurements are made with a stable, high resolution Fabry-Perot etalon, which performs a wavelength analysis on the light detected from the thermospheric emission features by spatially scanning the interference fringe plane with a multichannel array detector. The wavelength analysis characterizes the Doppler line profile of the emitting species. A sequential altitude scan, performed by a commandable horizon scan mirror, provides a cross-sectional view of the thermodynamic and dynamic state of the thermosphere below the orbit of the Dynamics Explorer B satellite.

Nonthermal line profiles from O/1S/ in the thermospheric nightglow

Generalized composite nonthermal line profiles are calculated for the thermospheric nighttime emission from O(1S) metastable atoms based on an extension to the simple relaxation model of Hays and Walker (1966). It is shown that the Dynamics Explorer Fabry-Perot interferometer will enable accurate values to be obtained for the branching ratio of the O(1S) production reaction and for the excitation exchange collision frequency.

Parallelism maps for optically contacted etalons

A measurement technique is described that is capable of producing accurate numerical maps of the parallelism defect of optically contacted Fabry-Perot etalons. A photoelectric raster scan of the etalon transmission intensity distribution is performed at each of three closely spaced etalon tunings, one at maximum on-axis and two at the half-maxima on-axis positions. Simple data manipulation gives numerical or contour maps of the parallelism defect. Results demonstrating the effect of mechanical constraints on etalon parallelism are presented

Stability of an optically contacted etalon to cosmic radiation

An investigation has been completed to determine the effects of prolonged exposure to cosmic radiation on Zerodur spacing elements used between two dielectric reflectors on silica substrates in the plane Fabry-Perot etalon selected for flight in the Dynamics Explorer satellite. The measured radiation expansion coefficient for Zerodur is approximately -4.0 x 10 to the -12th/rad. In addition to the overall change in gap dimension, test data indicate a degradation in etalon parallelism, which is ascribed to the different doses received by the three spacers due to their differing distances from a Co-60 source. The effect is considered to be of practical use in the tuning and parallelism adjustment of fixed gap etalons. The variation is small enough not to pose a problem for the satellite instrument where expected radiation doses are less than 10,000 rads.
