Simultaneous laser oscillation of four nondegenerate polarization and propagation direction eigenstates of a single TEM-00 mode was observed in a ring laser cavity. The observed polarization and frequency properties of the ring laser were analyzed in terms of the Jones matrix calculus.
With respect to irreversible, non-homeomorphic maps, contravariant and covariant tensor fields have distinctly natural covariance and transformational behavior. For thermodynamic processes which are non-adiabatic, the fact that the process cannot be represented by a homeomorphic map emphasizes the logical arrow of time, an idea which encompasses a principle of retrodictive determinism for covariant tensor fields.
Cartan's methods of exterior differential forms are utilized to derive conformal and absolute conservation equations for various field quantities in relativistic hydromechanics. In particular, Fridman's results for the conservation of vector lines are extended to space time situations. The invariance concepts of Helmholtz and Bernoulli are formulated for arbitrary frames of reference, and the separate conservation concepts of total mass and total number in space time are distinguished and associated with the concept of turbulence.
For certain dissipative systems, a comparison can be made between the Hamilton-Jacobi theory and the conformal invariance of action theory. The two concepts are not identical, but the conformal action theory covers the Hamilton-Jacobi theory.
