The very forward CASTOR calorimeter of the CMS experiment

The physics motivation, detector design, triggers, calibration, alignment, simulation, and overall performance of the very forward CASTOR calorimeter of the CMS experiment are reviewed. The CASTOR Cherenkov sampling calorimeter is located very close to the LHC beam line, at a radial distance of about 1 cm from the beam pipe, and at 14.4 m from the CMS interaction point, covering the pseudorapidity range of $-$6.6 $\lt\eta\lt$ $-$5.2. It was designed to withstand high ambient radiation and strong magnetic fields. The performance of the detector in measurements of forward energy density, jets, and processes characterized by rapidity gaps, is reviewed using data collected in proton and nuclear collisions at the LHC.

Innovations in optimization and control of accelerators using methods of differential geometry and genetic algorithms (Final Report)

Online tuning of particle accelerators is necessary in order to achieve optimal machine performance. However, it is also a major challenge due to the large parameter space which must be searched and the fact that many of the desir- able objectives compete with one another, and so will not reach their optimal values simultaneously. In order to mitigate these issues, we have explored using dimension-reduction techniques to reduce the size of the parameter space which must be searched and multi-objective genetic algorithms to obtain the sets of tuning parameters which provide pareto-optimal values for the objectives. These methods have enabled us to obtain improved values of the vertical emittance at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), and to do so with greater control of orbit errors. Algorithmic tuning is a multidisciplinary endeavour, requiring expertise in beam dynamics, diagnostics, control systems and computer science, and thus a key practical problem is to formulate a common language in which experts with different specialties can communicate. We developed a solution to this problem in the form of a generic accelerator software interface that allows for rapid prototyping of optimization and control algorithms. Our interface is built on the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control Systems (EPICS) and makes possible testing control code in simulation before deployment on real accelerators, as well as deployment of third-party optimization code.

Search for new phenomena with multiple charged leptons in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}= 13$ $\,\text {TeV}$

Results are reported from a search for physics beyond the standard model in final states with at least three charged leptons, in any combination of electrons or muons. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 $\,\text {fb}^{-1}$ of proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =13$ $\,\text {TeV}$ , recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2015. Two jets are required in each event, providing good sensitivity to strong production of gluinos and squarks. The search regions, sensitive to a range of different new physics scenarios, are defined using the number of jets tagged as originating from bottom quarks, the sum of the magnitudes of the transverse momenta of the jets, the imbalance in the overall transverse momentum in the event, and the invariant mass of opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs. The event yields observed in data are consistent with the expected background contributions from standard model processes. These results are used to derive limits in terms of R-parity conserving simplified models of supersymmetry that describe strong production of gluinos and squarks. Model-independent limits are presented to facilitate the reinterpretation of the results in a broad range of scenarios for physics beyond the standard model.

Exclusive and semi-exclusive pi+pi- production in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

A measurement is presented of the exclusive and semi-exclusive production of charged pion pairs in proton-proton collisions, pp to p(p*) + pi+pi- + p(p*) here the pi+pi- pair is emitted at central rapidities, and the scattered protons stay intact (p) or diffractively dissociate (p*) without detection. The measurement is performed with the CMS detector at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 450 inverse microbarns collected at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The dipion cross section, measured for single-pion transverse momentum pt >0.2 GeV and rapidity abs(y)<2, is 26.5 +/- 0.3 (stat) +/- 5.0 (syst) +/- 1.1 (lumi) microbarns. The differential cross sections measured as a function of the invariant mass, pt, and y of the pion pair, and as a function of single-pion pt, are compared to phenomenological predictions.

Measurement of electroweak-induced production of W$\gamma$ with two jets in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV and constraints on anomalous quartic gauge couplings

A measurement of electroweak-induced production of Wγ and two jets is performed, where the W boson decays leptonically. The data used in the analysis correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb$^{−1}$ collected by the CMS experiment in $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV proton-proton collisions produced at the LHC. Candidate events are selected with exactly one muon or electron, missing transverse momentum, one photon, and two jets with large rapidity separation. An excess over the hypothesis of the standard model without electroweak production of Wγ with two jets is observed with a significance of 2.7 standard deviations. The cross section measured in the fiducial region is 10.8 ± 4.1(stat) ± 3.4(syst) ± 0.3(lumi) fb, which is consistent with the standard model electroweak prediction. The total cross section for Wγ in association with two jets in the same fiducial region is measured to be 23.2 ± 4.3(stat) ± 1.7(syst) ± 0.6(lumi) fb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction from the combination of electroweak and quantum chromodynamics-induced processes. No deviations are observed from the standard model predictions and experimental limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings f$_{M,0−7}$ /Λ$^{4}$, f$_{T,0−2}$ /Λ$^{4}$, and f$_{T,5−7}$ /Λ$^{4}$ are set at 95% confidence level.

A search for new phenomena in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {TeV} $ in final states with missing transverse momentum and at least one jet using the $\alpha _{\mathrm {T}}$ variable

A search for new phenomena is performed in final states containing one or more jets and an imbalance in transverse momentum in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 $\,\text {TeV}$ . The analysed data sample, recorded with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 $\,\text {fb}^{-1}$ . Several kinematic variables are employed to suppress the dominant background, multijet production, as well as to discriminate between other standard model and new physics processes. The search provides sensitivity to a broad range of new-physics models that yield a stable weakly interacting massive particle. The number of observed candidate events is found to agree with the expected contributions from standard model processes, and the result is interpreted in the mass parameter space of fourteen simplified supersymmetric models that assume the pair production of gluinos or squarks and a range of decay modes. For models that assume gluino pair production, masses up to 1575 and 975 $\,\text {GeV}$ are excluded for gluinos and neutralinos, respectively. For models involving the pair production of top squarks and compressed mass spectra, top squark masses up to 400 $\,\text {GeV}$ are excluded.

Observation of $\Upsilon$(1S) pair production in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV

Pair production of Y(1S) mesons is observed at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV by the CMS experiment in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.7 fb$^{−1}$. Both Y(1S) candidates are fully reconstructed via their decays to μ$^{+}$ μ$^{−}$. The fiducial acceptance region is defined by an absolute Y(1S) rapidity smaller than 2.0. The fiducial cross section for the production of Y(1S) pairs, assuming that both mesons decay isotropically, is measured to be 68.8±12.7 (stat)±7.4 (syst)±2.8 ( $ \mathrm{\mathcal{B}} $ ) pb, where the third uncertainty comes from the uncertainty in the branching fraction of Y(1S) decays to μ$^{+}$ μ$^{−}$. Assuming instead that the Y(1S) mesons are produced with different polarizations leads to variations in the measured cross section in the range from −38% to +36%.

Suppression and azimuthal anisotropy of prompt and nonprompt ${\mathrm{J}}/\psi $ production in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{{s_{_{\text {NN}}}}} =2.76$ $\,\mathrm{TeV}$

The nuclear modification factor $R_{\mathrm{AA}}$ and the azimuthal anisotropy coefficient $v_{2}$ of prompt and nonprompt (i.e. those from decays of b hadrons) ${\mathrm{J}}/\psi $ mesons, measured from PbPb and pp collisions at $\sqrt{{s_{_{\text {NN}}}}} =2.76$ $\,\mathrm{TeV}$ at the LHC, are reported. The results are presented in several event centrality intervals and several kinematic regions, for transverse momenta $p_{\mathrm{T}} >6.5$ $\,{\mathrm{GeV}}/{\mathrm{c}}$ and rapidity $|{y}|<2.4$ , extending down to $p_{\mathrm{T}} =3$ $\,{\mathrm{GeV}}/{\mathrm{c}}$ in the $1.6<|{y}|<2.4$ range. The $v_{2}$ of prompt ${\mathrm{J}}/\psi $ is found to be nonzero, but with no strong dependence on centrality, rapidity, or $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ over the full kinematic range studied. The measured $v_{2}$ of nonprompt ${\mathrm{J}}/\psi $ is consistent with zero. The $R_{\mathrm{AA}}$ of prompt ${\mathrm{J}}/\psi $ exhibits a suppression that increases from peripheral to central collisions but does not vary strongly as a function of either y or $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ in the fiducial range. The nonprompt ${\mathrm{J}}/\psi $ $R_{\mathrm{AA}}$ shows a suppression which becomes stronger as rapidity or $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ increases. The $v_{2}$ and $R_{\mathrm{AA}}$ of open and hidden charm, and of open charm and beauty, are compared.

Charged-particle nuclear modification factors in PbPb and pPb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{N}\;\mathrm{N}}}=5.02 $ TeV

The spectra of charged particles produced within the pseudorapidity window |η| < 1 at $ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{N}\,\mathrm{N}}}=5.02 $ TeV are measured using 404 μb$^{−1}$ of PbPb and 27.4 pb$^{−1}$ of pp data collected by the CMS detector at the LHC in 2015. The spectra are presented over the transverse momentum ranges spanning 0.5 < p$_{T}$ < 400 GeV in pp and 0.7 < p$_{T}$ < 400 GeV in PbPb collisions. The corresponding nuclear modification factor, R$_{AA}$, is measured in bins of collision centrality. The R$_{AA}$ in the 5% most central collisions shows a maximal suppression by a factor of 7-8 in the p$_{T}$ region of 6-9 GeV. This dip is followed by an increase, which continues up to the highest p$_{T}$ measured, and approaches unity in the vicinity of p$_{T}$ = 200 GeV. The R$_{AA}$ is compared to theoretical predictions and earlier experimental results at lower collision energies. The newly measured pp spectrum is combined with the pPb spectrum previously published by the CMS collaboration to construct the pPb nuclear modification factor, R$_{pA}$, up to 120 GeV. For p$_{T}$ > 20 GeV, R$_{pA}$ exhibits weak momentum dependence and shows a moderate enhancement above unity.

Measurements of differential production cross sections for a Z boson in association with jets in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV

Cross sections for the production of a Z boson in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV are measured using a data sample collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to 19.6 fb$^{−1}$. Differential cross sections are presented as functions of up to three observables that describe the jet kinematics and the jet activity. Correlations between the azimuthal directions and the rapidities of the jets and the Z boson are studied in detail. The predictions of a number of multileg generators with leading or next-to-leading order accuracy are compared with the measurements. The comparison shows the importance of including multi-parton contributions in the matrix elements and the improvement in the predictions when next-to-leading order terms are included.

Search for electroweak production of charginos in final states with two τ leptons in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV

Results are presented from a search for the electroweak production of supersymmetric particles in pp collisions in final states with two τ leptons. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity between 18.1 fb$^{−1}$ and 19.6 fb$^{−1}$ depending on the final state of τ lepton decays, at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The observed event yields in the signal regions are consistent with the expected standard model backgrounds. The results are interpreted using simplified models describing the pair production and decays of charginos or τ sleptons. For models describing the pair production of the lightest chargino, exclusion regions are obtained in the plane of chargino mass vs. neutralino mass under the following assumptions: the chargino decays into third-generation sleptons, which are taken to be the lightest sleptons, and the sleptons masses lie midway between those of the chargino and the neutralino. Chargino masses below 420 GeV are excluded at a 95% confidence level in the limit of a massless neutralino, and for neutralino masses up to 100 GeV, chargino masses up to 325 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. Constraints are also placed on the cross section for pair production of τ sleptons as a function of mass, assuming a massless neutralino.

Measurement and QCD analysis of double-differential inclusive jet cross sections in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV and cross section ratios to 2.76 and 7 TeV

A measurement of the double-differential inclusive jet cross section as a function of the jet transverse momentum p$_{T}$ and the absolute jet rapidity |y| is presented. Data from LHC proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb$^{−1}$, have been collected with the CMS detector. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-k$_{T}$ clustering algorithm with a size parameter of 0.7 in a phase space region covering jet p$_{T}$ from 74 GeV up to 2.5 TeV and jet absolute rapidity up to |y| = 3.0. The low-p$_{T}$ jet range between 21 and 74 GeV is also studied up to |y| = 4.7, using a dedicated data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 pb$^{−1}$. The measured jet cross section is corrected for detector effects and compared with the predictions from perturbative QCD at next-to-leading order (NLO) using various sets of parton distribution functions (PDF). Cross section ratios to the corresponding measurements performed at 2.76 and 7 TeV are presented. From the measured double-differential jet cross section, the value of the strong coupling constant evaluated at the Z mass is α$_{S}$(M$_{Z}$) = 0.1164$_{− 0.0043}^{+ 0.0060}$ , where the errors include the PDF, scale, nonperturbative effects and experimental uncertainties, using the CT10 NLO PDFs. Improved constraints on PDFs based on the inclusive jet cross section measurement are presented.

Search for CP violation in $ t\overline{t} $ production and decay in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV

The results of a first search for CP violation in the production and decay of top quark-antiquark ( $ t\overline{t} $ ) pairs are presented. The search is based on asymmetries in T-odd, triple-product correlation observables, where T is the time-reversal operator. The analysis uses a sample of proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb$^{−1}$. Events are selected having one electron or muon and at least four jets. The T-odd observables are measured using four-momentum vectors associated with $ t\overline{t} $ production and decay. The measured asymmetries exhibit no evidence for CP-violating effects, consistent with the expectation from the standard model.

Search for heavy neutrinos or third-generation leptoquarks in final states with two hadronically decaying $\tau$ leptons and two jets in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV

A search for new particles has been conducted using events with two high transverse momentum (p$_{T}$) τ leptons that decay hadronically, at least two high-p$_{T}$ jets, and missing transverse energy from the τ lepton decays. The analysis is performed using data from proton-proton collisions, collected by the CMS experiment in 2015 at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.1 fb$^{−1}$. The results are interpreted in two physics models. The first model involves heavy right-handed neutrinos, N$_{ℓ}$ (ℓ = e, μ, τ), and right-handed charged bosons, W$_{R}$, arising in a left-right symmetric extension of the standard model. Masses of the W$_{R}$ boson below 2.35 (1.63) TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming the N$_{τ}$ mass is 0.8 (0.2) times the mass of the W$_{R}$ boson and that only the N$_{τ}$ flavor contributes to the W$_{R}$ decay width. In the second model, pair production of third-generation scalar leptoquarks that decay into ττbb is considered. Third-generation scalar leptoquarks with masses below 740 GeV are excluded, assuming a 100% branching fraction for the leptoquark decay to a τ lepton and a bottom quark. This is the first search at hadron colliders for the third-generation Majorana neutrino, as well as the first search for third-generation leptoquarks in the final state with a pair of hadronically decaying τ leptons and jets.

Measurement of the transverse momentum spectrum of the Higgs boson produced in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV using $H \to WW$ decays

The cross section for Higgs boson production in pp collisions is studied using the H → W$^{+}$W$^{−}$ decay mode, followed by leptonic decays of the W bosons to an oppositely charged electron-muon pair in the final state. The measurements are performed using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.4 fb$^{−1}$. The Higgs boson transverse momentum (p$_{T}$) is reconstructed using the lepton pair p$_{T}$ and missing p$_{T}$. The differential cross section times branching fraction is measured as a function of the Higgs boson p$_{T}$ in a fiducial phase space defined to match the experimental acceptance in terms of the lepton kinematics and event topology. The production cross section times branching fraction in the fiducial phase space is measured to be 39 ± 8 (stat) ± 9 (syst) fb. The measurements are found to agree, within experimental uncertainties, with theoretical calculations based on the standard model.

Searches for invisible decays of the Higgs boson in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7, 8, and 13 TeV

Searches for invisible decays of the Higgs boson are presented. The data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC correspond to integrated luminosities of 5.1, 19.7, and 2.3 fb$^{−1}$ at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, respectively. The search channels target Higgs boson production via gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and in association with a vector boson. Upper limits are placed on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson decay to invisible particles, as a function of the assumed production cross sections. The combination of all channels, assuming standard model production, yields an observed (expected) upper limit on the invisible branching fraction of 0.24 (0.23) at the 95% confidence level. The results are also interpreted in the context of Higgs-portal dark matter models.

Jet energy scale and resolution in the CMS experiment in pp collisions at 8 TeV

Improved jet energy scale corrections, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, are presented. The corrections as a function of pseudorapidity η and transverse momentum p(T) are extracted from data and simulated events combining several channels and methods. They account successively for the effects of pileup, uniformity of the detector response, and residual data-simulation jet energy scale differences. Further corrections, depending on the jet flavor and distance parameter (jet size) R, are also presented. The jet energy resolution is measured in data and simulated events and is studied as a function of pileup, jet size, and jet flavor. Typical jet energy resolutions at the central rapidities are 15–20% at 30 GeV, about 10% at 100 GeV, and 5% at 1 TeV. The studies exploit events with dijet topology, as well as photon+jet, Z+jet and multijet events. Several new techniques are used to account for the various sources of jet energy scale corrections, and a full set of uncertainties, and their correlations, are provided. The final uncertainties on the jet energy scale are below 3% across the phase space considered by most analyses (p(T),>30 GeV and 0| η| <5.). In the barrel region (| η| <1.3) an uncertainty below 1% for p(T)>30 GeV is reached, when excluding the jet flavor uncertainties, which are provided separately for different jet flavors. A new benchmark for jet energy scale determination at hadron colliders is achieved with 0.32% uncertainty for jets with \pt of the order of 165–330\GeV, and | η| <0.8.
