An Exercise in Ion Beam Analysis

Scattering phenomena are taught in introductory physics classes, and concepts such as conservation of energy and momentum are used at all levels of physics. However, applications of scattering are often not included as part of an education. Rutherford scattering, a topic of any modern physics course, is now used as a tool for materials science applications. In the absence of lab equipment for students to perform such experiments, an exercise in the analysis of scattering data may accent the useful concepts given in lectures. The objective of this exercise is to analyze data from Rutherford backscattering experiments in order to determine elemental composition.

Simulated space environmental effects on a polyetherimide and its carbon fiber-reinforced composites

The selection of materials for spacecraft construction requires identification of candidate materials which can perform reliably in the space environment. Understanding the effects of the space environment on the materials is an important step in the selection of candidate materials. This work examines the effects of energetic electrons, thermal cycling, electron radiation in conjunction with thermal cycling, and atomic oxygen on a thermoplastic polyetherimide and its carbon-fiber-reinforced composites. Composite materials made with non-sized fibers as well as materials made with fibers sized with an epoxy were evaluated. The mechanical and thermomechanical properties of the materials were studied and spectroscopic techniques were used to investigate the mechanisms for the observed effects. Considerations for future material development are suggested.

Molecular properties of polymeric materials for space applications

This cooperative agreement was intended to investigate the effects of a space environment on the properties of polymeric materials. In addition, efforts have been made to understand and investigate environment simulation techniques and test methodology. The results identified the changes in the properties of six aerospace structural adhesives, three neat high polymers, and two fiber-reinforced polymers, as caused by exposure to four simulated space environmental conditions. Significant property changes occurred for several of the systems as a result of one or more of the exposures. A summary of the research follows a list of related publications and presentations.

Dynamic mechanical analysis of polymeric materials

Polymeric materials exhibit mechanical behavior which is dependent on temperature. Dynamic mechanical analysis measures the mechanical damping and resonant frequency of a material over a temperature range. Values of the dynamic loss modulus, storage modulus, and loss tangent can be calculated from these data. The glass transition temperature and onset temperature are obtained from curves of the dynamic moduli versus temperature.
