Increased Static Charge–Induced Threshold Voltage Shifts and Memristor Activity in Pentacene OFETs Comprising Polystyrene–Based Gate Dielectrics Containing Electroactive Small Molecule Crystallites

Top-contact bottom-gate pentacene OFETs are fabricated with single layer dielectrics comprised of either polystyrene (PS), poly(4-methylstyrene) (P4MS), or poly(4-tert-butylstyrene) (P4TBS). The polystyrenes are blended with varying concentrations of two different small molecules, dibenzotetrathiafulvalene (DBTTF) and 2,8-difluoro-5,11-bis(triethylsilylethynyl)anthradithiophene (diF-TES-ADT), to form small, separated crystallites contained throughout the polymer dielectric layer. The OFET characteristics of these devices are investigated and their threshold voltage shifts are measured after –70 V static charging for 5 min. Two-terminal measurements are conducted using multiple different gate biases in the range of –50 to +50 V to investigate memristor behavior in the devices. OFETs containing DBTTF exhibited ΔVth increases as large as 330% relative to control OFETs containing no DBTTF, while OFETs containing at least 7.5 wt.% DBTTF exhibited memristor activity, with currents ranging from 20 nA to 44 µA depending on the applied bias. Furthermore, this work demonstrates that including small, separated crystallites in polymer dielectrics enhances their charge storage ability and can be promising for creating nonbinary memory devices for data processing. Additionally, the observed memristor activity indicates the OFETs in this work can be used in development of neuromorphic systems that aim to mimic the synaptic behavior of the human nervous system.

Solution–Doped Donor–Acceptor Copolymers Based on Diketopyrrolopyrrole and 3, 3'–Bis (2–(2–(2–Methoxyethoxy) Ethoxy) ethoxy)–2, 2'–Bithiophene Exhibiting Outstanding Thermoelectric Power Factors with p –Dopants

The design of polymeric semiconductors exhibiting high electrical conductivity (σ) and thermoelectric power factor (PF) will be vital for flexible large-area electronics. In this work, four polymers based on diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP), 2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxine (EDOT), thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT), and 3, 3'-bis (2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethoxy) ethoxy)-2, 2'-bithiophene (MEET) are investigated as side-chains, with the MEET polymers newly synthesized for this study. These polymers are systematically doped with tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane ( F 4 TCNQ), CF3SO3H, and the synthesized dopant Cp(CN) 3 -(COOMe) 3 , differing in geometry and electron affinity. The DPP-EDOT-based polymer containing MEET as side-chains exhibits the highest conductivity (σ) ≈700 S cm–1 in this series with the acidic dopant (CF 3 SO 3 H). This polymer also shows the lowest oxidation potential by cyclic voltammetry (CV), the strongest intermolecular interactions evidenced by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and has the most oxygen-based functionality for possible hydrogen bonding and ionic screening. Other polymers exhibit high σ ≈300–500 S cm–1 and power factor up to 300 µW m –1 K –2 . The mechanism of conductivity is predominantly electronic, as validated by time-dependent conductance studies and transient thermo voltage monitoring over time, including for those doped with the acid. Furthermore, these materials maintain significant thermal stability and air stability over ≈6 weeks. Density functional theory calculations reveal molecular geometries and inform about frontier energy levels. Raman spectroscopy, in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS) and x-ray diffraction, provides insight into the solid-state microstructure and degree of phase separation of the doped polymer films. Infrared spectroscopy enables this study to further quantify the degree of charge transfer from polymer to dopant.

2-Aminoanthracene Crystallization in Its Compatible Polystyrene Block: RAFT Synthesis and Enhanced Charge Retention in Pentacene Transistor Gate Dielectrics

We synthesized polystyrene-block-polyanthrylaminomethylstyrene (PS-b-PAAS) via RAFT reaction and side chain modification where the PAAS block is 50%. By blending 2-aminoanthracene (2AA) with PS-b-PAAS, the co-aggregation behavior of the PAAS block and 2AA within the thin film was observed by optical microscopy (OM) and x-ray diffraction. At 5 and 10 wt% of 2AA within the thin film, OM results showed a clear morphological difference between PS matrix and PS-b-PAAS matrix. Differences in the 2AA excited state lifetime in these matrices were also established using transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS). Blends were used as gate dielectrics in pentacene transistors. We compared characteristic voltage (Vc, an indicator of threshold voltage) before and after charging of PS-b-PAAS blended with unsubstituted PS and both polymers individually blended with 2AA. For blended PS-b-PAAS and PS, as the concentration of PS-b-PAAS increases, the decreased Vc especially with negative charging of the pentacene indicated a larger concentration of charge carriers induced by the dielectric film. The charging experiments also revealed that the unique structure formed by the 2AA/PS-b-PAAS blend significantly affected the charge storage capability of the organic field-effect transistors (OFET). Furthermore, this work demonstrates the novel co-aggregation structure in the dielectrics, and furthermore its impact on charge storage capability in pentacene OFETs.

Effect of organic electroactive crystallites in a dielectric matrix on the electrical properties of a polymer dielectric

In this work, the effects of inserting chargeable α-quaterthiophene (α4T) crystallites in polystyrene (PS) multilayers used as a transistor gate and capacitor dielectric were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and confocal microscopy indicated the formation of α4T crystallites in the PS matrix. A modified saturation-regime current voltage relationship was used to estimate organic field-effect transistor (OFET) threshold voltage V TH shifting, and in turn the quantities of stored charge that were observed as a result of dielectric charging. The crystallites increased the maximum charge storage capacity as well as the charge retention capability of the dielectrics. Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) showed that charges were localized near the α4T crystallites upon charging. Trilayer experiments validated the charge retention improvement of α4T crystallite-embedded PS dielectrics. The crystallites also improved breakdown characteristics in PS used as a capacitor dielectric, suggesting their application to storage capacitors in addition to OFET logic.

Permittivity Threshold and Thermodynamics of Integer Charge-Transfer Complexation for an Organic Donor–Acceptor Pair

Molecular or chemical-based charge doping provides a means to change the properties (e.g. conductivity) of a material through a complete or partial transfer of charge between its constituents. Understanding how local material environment impacts this process is thus important for controlling the properties of organic materials. This paper presents spectroscopic investigations of molecular charge transfer interactions between a pair of common charge-doping and -transporting materials (2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane, F4TCNQ, and N,N’-Diphenyl-N-N’-di-p-tolylbenzene-1,4-diamine, MPDA). Equilibrium constants associated with charge transfer were determined for donor-acceptor pairs dissolved in a series of solvents covering a range of values of permittivity. A threshold for highly favorable charge separation was observed to occur at a permittivity of ~8-9, with more and less favorable charge separation observed in solvents of higher and lower permittivity, respectively, but with chloroform (permittivity=4.81) exhibiting an anomalously favorable charge separation. Temperature-dependent studies were undertaken to assess the thermodynamics of charge separation. In 1,2- dichloroethane (permittivity=10.36) and chlorobenzene (permittivity=5.62), charge transfer was observed to be both enthalpically and entropically favorable. Charge separation in chloroform is exothermic and entropically disfavored, indicating that specific, inner-shell solvent-solute interactions stabilize the charge-separated complex and result in a net increase in local solution structure. Furthermore, our results provide insight on how modification to the chemical environment may be utilized to support stable charge transfer for molecular doping applications and requiring only modest changes in local permittivity.

Ratiometric vapor sensor

A ratiometric vapor sensor is described that includes a first sensor and a second sensor. The first sensor includes a first semiconductor component comprising a vapor-sensitive semiconducting organic compound, while the second sensor includes a second semiconductor component comprising a modified vapor-sensitive semiconducting organic compound including a modifying organic group. The ratiometric vapor sensor can be used to detect the presence of a vapor such as nitrogen dioxide, and determine the concentration of the vapor by comparing the outputs of electrodes connected to the first and second sensor.
