Estimating Lithium Fluxes from Produced Water: Marcellus Shale and Beyond

This talk summarizes the potential for critical minerals extraction from produced water and the current data constraints on making these evaluations. First, we present results from production simulations carried out using data from the Marcellus shale showing the lithium resource potential from this formation. Second, we broaden our estimations to show the critical mineral resource estimates from U.S. domestic shale operations. Lastly, we conclude with an overview of the NEWTS database and dashboard where we host the data used in our assessments.

Smart CO2 Transport-Route Planning Tool: Providing Data and Insights for Accelerating Carbon Transport & Storage Deployment

Overview presentation given at the 2024 FECM / NETL Carbon Management Research Project Review Meeting on NETL's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law-funded Smart CO2 Transport-Route Planning Tool and associated geodatabase. This machine learning informed, data-driven public resource was designed to inform regulators, industry, and researchers plan and develop safe and efficient transport routes across the country.

Carbon Storage Planning Inquiry Tool (CS PlanIT)

The CS PlanIT provides stakeholders with easy access to geographically explore, query, and evaluate multiple data layers for a user-defined area of interest, with the goal to accelerate carbon storage resource, feasibility assessments, and planning efforts. The data within CS PlanIT are arranged and categorized to assess each stage of the Carbon Capture and Storage supply chain, from CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) emission sources, critical energy infrastructure (including transport), to CO2 geologic storage and sink locations. Furthermore, stakeholders can gain insights into community and environmental impacts, as CS PlanIT leverages Environmental Justice and Social Justice (EJSJ) and natural hazard datasets. Additionally, documentation in the form of an interactive ArcGIS story map and data catalog are included within the EDX publication to provide user’s information to better understand and explain CS PlanIT’s layout, functions, and associated data sets.

Paving the way for Stakeholder use of Carbon Storage & Transport Digital Resources

This online resource is intended to provide a comprehensive “one-stop-shop” for understanding the availability of tools, data, and models developed under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) as they relate to supporting stakeholders’ Carbon Storage and Transport needs. To support accessibility of these BIL products, supplemental information regarding project life-cycle relevance, update history, release dates, input and output formats, and example use-cases will be integrated into consistent and accessible Story Map formats. This presentation is to update on the progress of this effort and detail anticipated next steps associated with ongoing development.

Evaluating the Nation's Pipeline Infrastructure with NETL's Advanced Infrastructure Integrity Model (AIIM)

This poster is a part of BIL-EDX4CCS Task 36: Advanced Infrastructure Integrity Modeling to Evaluate Existing Energy Infrastructure Reusability and Risk, the goal of which is to produce a smart tool that will assess existing energy infrastructure reusability and risk using the Advanced Infrastructure Integrity Model (AIIM). This model forecasts lifespan and potential risk using a multitude of factors such as incidents reports, structural characteristics, and the surrounding environment. The project aims to provide scientific insights for a better understanding of carbon storage (CS), potential to support CS stakeholder needs, national decarbonization, and mitigating climate change. AIIM will utilize an energy infrastructure database as its input, developed by acquiring publicly available data as well as NETL derived products. These resources include incidents, geohazards, and infrastructure variables. Soil data in the form of rasters and pipeline incident reports were processed and a script was developed to count the number of times features such as roads, railroads, and rivers intersected with pipeline segments which were then converted to points. Distance to oil and natural gas wells, petroleum ports, intermodal freight facilities, and geologic structures were also calculated. After data preparation and quality control was completed, the data was integrated into the pipeline points. Once models are complete, a smart tool will be created in the form of an online dashboard.

A Geodatabase Designed to Inform and Support Safe CO2 Transport-Route Planning

The National Energy Technology Laboratory developed the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Pipeline Route Planning Database to inform safe and sustainable CO2 transport planning in support of decarbonization efforts. This comprehensive Esri Geodatabase contains over 90 GBs of data and 60+ spatial layers representing key considerations including natural hazards, infrastructure, energy, and social justice. Leveraging ArcGIS Pro, nationwide raster, and vector datasets containing millions of features were processed to be easily digestible for users and complex modeling software.
