Parameter identification of civil engineering structures

This paper concerns the development of an identification method required in determining structural parameter variations for systems subjected to an extended exposure to the environment. The concept of structural identifiability of a large scale structural system in the absence of damping is presented. Three criteria are established indicating that a large number of system parameters (the coefficient parameters of the differential equations) can be identified by a few actuators and sensors. An eight-bay-fifteen-story frame structure is used as example. A simple model is employed for analyzing the dynamic response of the frame structure.

Control of large flexible space structures using pole placement design techniques

A design approach via the pole placement techniques for the class of large flexible space structures is developed. The numerical problems in pole placement algorithm, arising from large dimension systems and the extremely low frequency eigenvalues which occur in large space structure models are examined. It shows these numerical difficulties may be overcome by properly selecting the sensor/actuator locations and introducing a frequency scaling scheme. The concepts of this paper are illustrated by some numerical studies on the linear feedback control design of a representative large spacecraft consisting of a small rigid core with ten radial booms (five booms 1000 ft long and five shorter booms 700 ft long) lying in a plane.

Bending and torsional vibrations of open tube booms on spinning spacecraft

The mathematical formulation is presented of the coupled bending and twisting equations of motion for open tube booms in spinning spacecraft. The equations are applicable to a general class of open tube booms whose shear center does not coincide with the centroid of the cross section. The emphasis in this paper is on the treatment of the coupled bending and twisting motions. The equations of motion of the center of mass are provided in other references. The results of a simulation of the bending and twisting motion of a circular cross-section boom having a small longitudinal slot on a spinning spacecraft is provided. The simulation demonstrates that the centrifugal forces will induce twisting motion due to offset shear center.

Dynamic analysis of the GEOS satellite

The assumed modes method is used to investigate the stability of the GEOS satellite. The system is discretized by representing the continuous displacement by finite series of space-dependent admissible functions multiplied by time-dependent generalized coordinates. The spatial dependence is eliminated by integration over the elastic domains, so that the testing functional reduces to a testing function. The sign properties of the testing function are then tested and the equilibrium defined as nontrivial. In considering the stability of small motions about nontrivial equilibrium, it is shown that if the analysis performed by ignoring the motion of the mass center indicates stability, then the system remains stable if the motion of the mass center is included.

Dynamics of a gravity-gradient stabilized flexible spacecraft

The dynamics of gravity-gradient stabilized flexible satellite in the neighborhood of a deformed equilibrium configuration are discussed. First the equilibrium configuration was determined by solving a set of nonlinear differential equations. Then stability of motion about the deformed equilibrium was tested by means of the Liapunov direct method. The natural frequencies of oscillation of the complete structure were calculated. The analysis is applicable to the RAE/B satellite.
