Thermal relaxation of a two-dimensional plasma in a d.c. magnetic field. I - Theory. II - Numerical simulation

Theoretical considerations relevant to the rate of thermal relaxation of a two-dimensional plasma in a strong uniform dc magnetic field are developed. The Vahala-Montgomery (1971) kinetic description is completed by providing a cut-off time for the time of interaction of two particles contributing to the collision term. The kinetic equation is shown to predict that thermal relaxation varies as a function of defined dimensionless time.

Statistical mechanics of 'negative temperature' states

Consideration of the dynamics of a two-dimensional guiding center plasma, recently shown by Taylor and McNamara (1971) to be identical to the dynamics of the discrete vortex model of Onsager (1949). A semirigorous application of the methods of equilibrium statistical mechanics to the guiding center plasma (or equivalently, the line vortex system) is presented. An adaptation of the apparatus of the theory of probability is attempted, in the form given by Khinchin (1949) to obtain ensemble-average predictions for the states of the guiding center plasma. Interest focuses primarily on the regime in which the interaction energy is high enough to be above the Onsager 'negative temperature' threshold.

Thermal relaxation of a two dimensional plasma in a dc magnetic field. Part 2: Numerical simulation

The thermal relaxation process for a spatially uniform two dimensional plasma in a uniform dc magnetic field is simulated numerically. Thermal relaxation times are defined in terms of the time necessary for the numerically computer Boltzman H-function to decrease through a given part of the distance to its minimum value. Dependence of relaxation time on two parameters is studied: number of particles per Debye square and ratio of gyrofrequency to plasma frequency.

Electric field correlations in the guiding-center plasma

Electric field autocorrelations for the two-dimensional electrostatic guiding-center plasma are calculated numerically. It is concluded that the autocorrelation, averaged over a thermal equilibrium ensemble, is damped in an approximately exponential fashion, as predicted by Taylor and McNamara. Oscillatory behavior of the type predicted by Taylor and Thompson is not observed.

Io-accelerated electrons - Predictions for Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11

Based on a model in which electrons are accelerated to energies of 100 kiloelectron volts through sheaths associated with Io, predictions are made about energetic electrons to be observed by Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 in the Jovian magnetosphere. This energetic electron source may be distinguishable from the solar wind diffusion source by the radial flux profile and by the characteristic electron energies.

Equilibrium properties of a one-dimensional kinetic system.

One-dimensional systems of N = 500 and 250 particles in equilibrium are numerically simulated utilizing the method of molecular dynamics. Periodic boundary conditions are imposed. The classical two-body interaction potential is short range, repulsive and has a corresponding finite force. The equations of state are determined for densities both less and greater than one. Corresponding theoretical isochores are determined from models based on nearest-neighbor interactions and on a truncated virial expansion, and a comparison is made with the experimental isochores. Time independent radial distributions are constructed numerically and discussed. A change of state from a solidlike state to a fluid-gas state based on the penetrability of the particles is predicted. The transition temperatures are estimated from the radial distribution functions and the nearest-neighbor model. Self-diffusion is observed and the corresponding constants are determined from the velocity autocorrelation functions.

Electric field corrections in the guidance-center plasma

Electric field autocorrelations for the two-dimensional electrostatic guiding-center plasma are calculated numerically. It is concluded that the autocorrelation, averaged over a thermal equilibrium ensemble, is damped in an approximately exponential fashion, as predicted by Taylor and McNamara. Oscillatory behavior of the type predicted by Taylor and Thompson is not observed.

Statistical mechanics of negative temperature states

The dynamics of two-dimensional interacting line vortices is identical to that of the two-dimensional electrostatic guiding center plasma. Both are Hamiltonian systems and are therefore susceptible to statistical mechanical treatments. The predictions of the microcanonical ensemble are explored for this system. Interest focuses primarily on the regime of total positive interaction energy, which should be above the Onsager negative temperature threshold. Calculations of the probability distribution for a component by means of the central limit theorem are carried out in the manner of Khinchin. The probability distribution of a component reduced to the usual Gibbs distribution in the regime of positive temperatures, and is still explicitly calculable for negative temperatures. The negative temperature states are neither quiescent nor spatially uniform. Expressions for the temperature are explicitly provided in terms of the total particle energy and particle number. A BBGKY hierarchy can be derived for both temperature regimes. Numerical simulations involving solutions of the equations of motion of 4008 particles are presented.

Simulation of the 'negative temperature' instability for line vortices.

In previous numerical solution to the continuum Navier-Stokes equations, a 'negative temperature' instability for the two-dimensional motions of interacting line vortices was observed. The experiment is repeated for a discrete vortex model, thus obtaining a numerical simulation of the 'negative temperature' instability for a large number of discrete line vortices. Typical results which are shown, are thought to lie above and below the energy threshold for negative temperature instability.
