Leading Edge Microspoilers for Load Dumping in Wind Turbine Rotors

As rotor designs have grown in size and flexibility, new design challenges have arisen that could benefit from novel control strategies. Leading edge microspoilers (LEMS) have been shown to effectively reduce forces on airfoils by inducing stall at lower angles of attack. This paper investigates how LEMS can be used to reduce blade loading on large, flexible, downwind rotors during design-limiting design load cases. During shutdown in turbulent flows near cutout speed, LEMS could reduce the tip deflection spikes toward the tower by over 50% and keep flapwise root bending moments below normal operating conditions, thus eliminating these as design-driving load cases. In power producing load cases, deploying LEMS for a short period of time during a load spike can be effective to reduce toward-tower tip deflections without significantly impacting power produced, assuming these load spikes can be identified by a controller. Leveraging this technology could allow for lower specific power machines to be designed.

Radiation Analysis for the Human Lunar Return Mission

An analysis of the radiation hazards that are anticipated on an early Human Lunar Return (HLR) mission in support of NASA deep space exploration activities is presented. The HLR mission study emphasized a low cost lunar return to expand human capabilities in exploration, to answer fundamental science questions, and to seek opportunities for commercial development. As such, the radiation issues are cost related because the parasitic shield mass is expensive due to high launch costs. The present analysis examines the shield requirements and their impact on shield design.

Design of a Solar Sail Mission to Mars

A new area of interest in space vehicles is the solar sail. Various applications for which it has been considered are attitude control of satellites, focusing light on the jungles of Vietnam, and a Halley's comet rendezvous. Although for various reasons these projects were never completed, new interest in solar sails has arisen. The solar sail is an alternative to the rocket-propelled space vehicle as an interplanetary cargo vehicle, and manufacture of solar sails on the space station is a possibility. Solar sails have several advantages over rockets, including an unlimited power supply and low maintenance. The purpose of this project is to design a solar sail mission to Mars. The spacecraft will efficiently journey to Mars powered only by a solar sail. The vehicle weighs 487.16 kg and will be launchable on an expendable launch vehicle. The project includes an investigation of options to minimize cost, weight, and flight duration. The design of the sail and its deployment system are a major part of the project, as is the actual mission planning. Various topics researched include solar power, material, space environment, thermal control, trajectories, and orbit transfer. Various configurations are considered in order to determine the optimal structure. Another design consideration is the control system of the vehicle. This system includes the attitude control and the communication system of the sail. This project will aid in determining the feasibility of a solar sail and will raise public interest in space research.

Survival, profits and resource utilization

The intertwining of CAB regulation and airline operations makes it impossible to use operating and financial data from the regulated airlines to determine the extent to which regulation affects costs. The essentially nonregulated, but otherwise, similar, intrastate airlines operating wholly within California (and thus beyond the CAB's jurisdiction) provide a benchmark with which to compare the performance of regulated airlines and thus measure the effects of CAB regulation. This comparison, shows that the nonregulated environment within California has been a much sterner disciplinarian of airline operations than the regulated environment of interstate air transportation. Issues of survival, profits, efficiency, fares, and the impacts of CAB regulation on costs are examined.
