Cosmic rays in a random magnetic field: Breakdown of the quasilinear derivation of the kinetic equation

The problem of deriving a kinetic equation for the cosmic ray distribution function in a random magnetic field is considered. A model is adopted which is mathematically simple but which contains the essential physics. The perturbation expansion upon which the quasi-linear treatment is based is investigated. The existence of resonant particles causes the breakdown of the adiabatic approximation frequently used in this theory. Resonant particles cause a general secular growth of higher order terms in the expansion which invalidates the entire perturbative approach.

Suprathermal proton bremsstrahlung

In the process of suprathermal proton bremsstrahlung a suprathermal proton, or if you prefer, simply an energetic proton, strikes a relatively motionless electron in a background plasma and causes the electron to radiate. The differential cross section as a function of energy of the emitted photon calculated was believed to be superior to the conventional one in the case of relativistic collisions.

Lorentz-invariant formulation of Cherenkov radiation by tachyons

Previous treatments of Cherenkov radiation, electromagnetic and gravitational, by tachyons were in error because the prescription employed to cut off the divergent integral over frequency is not a Lorentz invariant procedure. The resulting equation of motion for the tachyon is therefore not covariant. The proper procedure requires an extended, deformable distribution of charge or mass and yields a particularly simple form for the tachyon's world line, one that could be deduced from simple invariance considerations. It is shown that Cherenkov radiation by tachyons implys their ultimate annihilation with an antitachyon and demonstrates a disturbing property of tachyons, namely the impossibility of specifying arbitrary Cauchy data even in a purely classical theory.
