Strong Surface-Enhanced Coherent Phonon Generation in van der Waals Materials

Terahertz (THz) coherent phonons have emerged as promising candidates for the next generation of high-speed, low-energy information carriers in atomically thin phononic or phonon-integrated on-chip devices. However, effectively manipulating THz coherent phonons remains a significant challenge. Here, in this study, we investigated THz coherent phonon generation in exfoliated van der Waals (vdW) flakes of Fe 3 GeTe 2 , Fe 5 GeTe 2 , and FePS 3 . We successfully generated the THz A 1g coherent phonon mode in these vdW flakes. An innovative approach involved partially exfoliating vdW flakes on a gold substrate and partially on a silicon (Si) substrate to compare the THz coherent phonon generation between both sides. Interestingly, we observed a significantly enhanced THz coherent phonon in the vdW/gold area compared with that in the vdW/Si area. Frequency-domain Raman mapping across the vdW flakes corroborated these findings. Numerical simulations further indicated a stronger enhanced surface field in vdW/gold structures than in vdW/Si structures. Consequently, we attribute the observed enhancement in THz coherent phonon generation to the increased surface field on the gold substrate. This enhancement was consistent across the three different vdW materials studied, suggesting the universality of this strategy. Our results hold promise for advancing the design of THz phononic and phonon-integrated devices.

Tunable Localized Charge Transfer Excitons in Nanoplatelet–2D Chalcogenide van der Waals Heterostructures

Observation of interlayer, charge transfer (CT) excitons in van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) based on 2D–2D systems has been well investigated. While conceptually interesting, these charge transfer excitons are highly delocalized and spatially localizing them requires twisting layers at very specific angles. This issue of localizing the CT excitons can be overcome via making nanoplate–2D material heterostructures (N2DHs) where one of the components is a spatially quantum confined medium. Here, we demonstrate the formation of CT excitons in a mixed dimensional system comprising MoSe 2 and WSe 2 monolayers and CdSe/CdS-based core/shell nanoplates (NPLs). Spectral signatures of CT excitons in our N2DHs were resolved locally at the 2D/single-NPL heterointerface using tip-enhanced photoluminescence (TEPL) at room temperature. By varying both the 2D material and the shell thickness of the NPLs and applying an out-of-plane electric field, the exciton resonance energy was tuned by up to 100 meV. Finally, our finding is a significant step toward the realization of highly tunable N2DH-based next-generation photonic devices.

Anionic Effects on Concentrated Aqueous Lithium Ion Dynamics

In this article, the structural dynamics, chemical reactivity, anisotropy, diffusivity, viscosity, and density were measured for concentrated lithium salt solutions, including lithium chloride (LiCl), lithium bromide (LiBr), lithium nitrite (LiNO 2 ), and lithium nitrate (LiNO 3 ), with methyl thiocyanate as an infrared vibrational probe molecule, using two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and viscometry. 2D IR, NMR, and viscosity results show that LiNO 2 exhibits longer correlation times, lower diffusivity, and nearly four times greater viscosity when compared to the other lithium salt solutions of the same concentration, suggesting that nitrite anions may strongly facilitate structure formation via strengthening water-ion interactions, directly impacting bulk solution properties at sufficiently high concentrations. Additionally, the LiNO 2 and LiNO 3 solutions show significantly reduced chemical reactivity with respect to lithium cations coordinating with the methyl thiocyanate when compared to the lithium halide salts.
