Spacelab status report

This paper describes the status of the Spacelab program to date, including the current baseline configuration and subsystems. Emphasis is placed on the features afforded to researchers and experimenters and approaches to experiment accommodation. The status of planning for use of the Spacelab is described as well as the role and training of the payload specialist. Several typical missions are presented to show how these concepts might be implemented. Discussion of the roles and responsibilities of the NASA and the European Space Agency in development of the Spacelab is included.

Space science plans for the shuttle era.

Three separate and distinct modes of using the space shuttle system have been identified. These modes include the boost of a spacecraft plus one or more propulsion stages into earth orbit or parking orbit, the establishment and maintenance of automated observatories in space, and the support of exploratory research and instrument development. Studies show that approximately 60% of all planned NASA missions require a shuttle third stage. Illustrations are presented to show how the largest spacecraft, Viking, and its propulsion system, Centaur, and a communications satellite, with an Agena stage to place it into a geostationary orbit, would fit into the shuttle. Results of the NASA Shuttle Sortie Workshop studies are discussed together with prospects of European cooperation in future workshop experiments.

The European Shuttle payload activity

Description of the ESRO organization for Space Shuttle payload planning, and evaluation of the European Sortie Lab design activity. The NASA and ESRO organizations for Shuttle payload planning are described and contrasted. The role of European cooperative activities in the development of three different Sortie Lab design concepts is discussed.

Application study of filamentary composites in a commercial jet aircraft fuselage

A study of applications of filamentary composite materials to aircraft fuselage structure was performed. General design criteria were established and material studies conducted using the 727-200 forebody as the primary structural component. Three design approaches to the use of composites were investigated: uniaxial reinforcement of metal structure, uniaxial and biaxial reinforcement of metal structure, and an all-composite design. Materials application studies for all three concepts were conducted on fuselage shell panels, keel beam, floor beams, floor panels, body frames, fail-safe straps, and window frames. Cost benefit studies were conducted and developmental program costs estimated. On the basis of weight savings, cost effectiveness, developmental program costs, and potential for early application on commercial aircraft, the unaxial design is recommended for a 5-year flight service evaluation program.
