Remote access for NAS: Supercomputing in a university environment
The experiment was designed to assist the Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation (NAS) Project Office in the testing and evaluation of long haul communications for remote users. The objectives of this work were to: (1) use foreign workstations to remotely access the NAS system; (2) provide NAS with a link to a large university-based computing facility which can serve as a model for a regional node of the Long-Haul Communications Subsystem (LHCS); and (3) provide a tail circuit to the University of Colorado a Boulder thereby simulating the complete communications path from NAS through a regional node to an end-user.
Advances in large area polycrystalline solar cells
Polycrystaline silicon is presently routinely processed into low cost 10 cm by 10 cm solar cells. However assuming minimal handling difficulties, only minor equipment modifications and no increase in processing complexity, the fabrication of even larger geometries would be economically advantageous. This investigation addressed the feasibility of developing 10 cm by 15 cm solar cells from research through pilot line production stages. The major thrust was to minimize costing by using existing production equipment and proven techniques wherever possible. Accordingly methods were developed to section larger substrates from existing cast ingots, a simple solar cell was designed and low cost processes implemented. After numerous preliminary experiments, pilot line production of 1500 cells was completed. Of these approximately 62 percent exhibited efficiencies greater than 7.0 percent, 53 percent were greater than 8.0 percent and 15 percent were greater than 9.0 percent. Based on this study, the regular production of 10 cm by 15 cm solar cells was determined to be both feasible and cost effective using existing processing methods.
Effects of water immersion on plasma catecholamines in normal humans
An investigation was conducted in order to determine whether water immersion to the neck (NI) alters plasma catecholamines in normal humans. Eight normal subjects were studied during a seated control study (C) and during 4 hr of NI, and the levels of norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (E) as determined by radioenzymatic assay were measured hourly. Results show that despite the induction of a marked natriuresis and diuresis indicating significant central hypervolemia, NI failed to alter plasma NE or E levels compared with those of either C or the corresponding prestudy 1.5 hr. In addition, the diuresis and natriuresis was found to vary independently of NE. These results indicate that the response of the sympathetic nervous system to acute volume alteration may differ from the reported response to chronic volume expansion.
