Magnetic Texture in Insulating Single Crystal High Entropy Oxide Spinel Films

Magnetic insulators are important materials for a range of next-generation memory and spintronic applications. Structural constraints in this class of devices generally require a clean heterointerface that allows effective magnetic coupling between the insulating layer and the conducting layer. However, there are relatively few examples of magnetic insulators that can be synthesized with surface qualities that would allow these smooth interfaces and precisely tuned interfacial magnetic exchange coupling, which might be applicable at room temperature. In this work, we demonstrate an example of how the configurational complexity in the magnetic insulator layer can be used to realize these properties. The entropy-assisted synthesis is used to create single-crystal (Mg 0.2 Ni 0.2 Fe 0.2 Co 0.2 Cu 0.2 )Fe 2 O 4 films on substrates spanning a range of strain states. These films show smooth surfaces, high resistivity, and strong magnetic responses at room temperature. Furthermore, local and global magnetic measurements further demonstrate how strain can be used to manipulate the magnetic texture and anisotropy. These findings provide insight into how precise magnetic responses can be designed using compositionally complex materials that may find application in next-generation magnetic devices.

Quantum oscillations with angular dependence in PdTe 2 single crystals

The layered transition-metal dichalcogenide PdTe 2 has been discovered to possess bulk Dirac points as well as topological surface states. By measuring the magnetization (up to 7 T) and magnetic torque (up to 35 T) in single crystalline PdTe2, we observe distinct de Haas–van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations. Eight frequencies are identified with H||c, with two low frequencies (F α = 8 T and F β = 117 T) dominating the spectrum. The effective masses obtained by fitting the Lifshitz–Kosevich (LK) equation to the data are $m_α^* =0.059m_0$ and $m_β^* =0.067m_0$ where $m_0$ is the free electron mass. The corresponding Landau fan diagrams allow the determination of the Berry phase for these oscillations resulting in values of ~0.67π for the 3D α band (hole-type) (down to the 1st Landau level) and ~0.23π–0.73π for the 3D β band (electron-type) (down to the 3rd Landau level). By investigating the angular dependence of the dHvA oscillations, we find that the frequencies and the corresponding Berry phase (Φ B ) vary with the field direction, with a Φ B ~ 0 when H is 10°–30° away from the ab plane for both α and β bands. Finally, the multiple band nature of PdTe 2 is further confirmed from Hall effect measurements.

Magnetic oxygen in transition metal oxides: A case study of Ba 2 CoO 4

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) exhibit exotic magnetic properties in both naturally formed and artificially structured materials, often difficult to understand in conventional wisdom. Magnetic insulator Ba 2 CoO 4 has mystified the community, because the CoO 4 tetrahedron is completely isolated with the nearest Co atoms far apart (~5 Å), making it impossible to account for long-range magnetic ordering seen experimentally using only Co. By theoretically investigating magnetism and relating our findings to experimental observations in bulk Ba 2 CoO 4 , we illustrate for the first time that the magnetic moment on oxygen atoms are the origin of the unexpected long-range magnetic ordering and low magnetic dimensionality. We find that the magnetic moment is not only localized on Co atoms, as assumed in all conventional data analysis, but also distributed on its tetrahedrally-coordinated O atoms. The total magnetic moment of the CoO 4 building block is 4.63μ B with the magnetic moment on Co being only 3.08μ B . Therefore, the magnetic building block is CoO 4 not Co. Furthermore, our first principles calculations are capable of explaining the origin of the unique magnetic response, including the presence of long-range magnetic ordering with two-dimensional character, and a one-dimensional magnetoelastic behavior. Having oxygen contribute to the magnetic moment will undoubtedly be identified as a universal property of magnetic TMOs, which will require a fresh look at conventional models of magnetism in TMOs.

Evidence for topological semimetallicity in a chain-compound TaSe 3

Among one-dimensional transition-metal trichalcogenides, TaSe 3 is unconventional in many respects. One is its strong topological semimetallicity as predicted by first-principles calculations. We report the experimental investigations of the electronic properties of one-dimensional-like TaSe 3 single crystals. While the b-axis electrical resistivity shows good metallicity with a high residual resistivity ratio greater than 100, an extremely large magnetoresistance is observed reaching ≈7 × 10 3 % at 1.9 K for 14 T. Interestingly, the magnetoresistance follows the Kohler’s rule with nearly quadratic magnetic field dependence, consistent with the electron–hole compensation scenario as confirmed by our Hall conductivity data. Both the longitudinal and Hall conductivities show Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations with two frequencies: F α ≈ 97 T and F β ≈ 186 T. Quantitative analysis indicates that F α results from the two-dimensional-like electron band with the non-trivial Berry phase [1.1π], and Fβ from the hole band with the trivial Berry phase [0(3D) -0.16π(2D)]. Our experimental findings are consistent with the predictions based on first-principles calculations.

Canted Eu magnetic structure in EuMnSb 2

Magnetic ordering breaks the time-reversal symmetry, greatly impacting material topological properties. Here, we report the investigation of the magnetic properties of the layered EuMnSb 2 , which has two sets of magnetic sublattices. Both the magnetization and electrical resistivity reveal two phase transitions with one at T N,Eu ~21K and the other at T N,Mn ~346K. Single crystal neutron diffraction refinement indicates that both transitions are originated from magnetic ordering. Below T N,Mn , the Mn sublattice forms the C-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with moments [(4.5±0.6)μB at 7 K] pointing along the a axis. Below T N,Eu , the Eu sublattice forms the canted A-type AFM structure with moments [(5.9±0.8)μB at 7 K] lying in the ac plane but pointing (41 ± 1)° away from the a axis. Quantitative analysis indicates that the spin-spin correlation length, while anisotropic, has long-range characteristic in all directions for both the Eu and Mn sublattices.
