SAR processing based on the exact two-dimensional transfer function

The two-dimensional transfer functions of several synthetic aperture radar (SAR) focusing algorithms are derived considering the spaceborne SAR environments. The formulation includes the factors of the earth rotation and the antenna squint angles. The resultant transfer functions are explicitly expressed in terms of Doppler centroid frequency and Doppler frequency rate, which can be accurately estimated from the SAR data. Point target simulation results show that the algorithm based on the two-dimensional Fourier transformation outperforms the one-dimensional one for processing data acquired from high squint angles. The two-dimensional Fourier transformation approach appears to be a viable and simple solution for the processor design of future spaceborne SAR systems.

Optimal Doppler centroid estimation for SAR data from a quasi-homogeneous source

This correspondence briefly describes two Doppler centroid estimation (DCE) algorithms, provides a performance summary for these algorithms, and presents the experimental results. These algorithms include that of Li et al. (1985) and a newly developed one that is optimized for quasi-homogeneous sources. The performance enhancement achieved by the optimal DCE algorithm is clearly demonstrated by the experimental results.

Compensating for Range Migration in Synthetic-Aperture Radar

Correlation algorithm sharpens radar imagery. Azimuthal correlation of point-target response performed in frequency domain by fast Fourier transforms relatively efficient in arithmetic operations. Frequencydomain azimuthal response has simple form that enables correction for range migration made simultaneously and over wide area, thereby providing many picture elements.

A SAR correlation algorithm which accommodates large-range migration

This paper presents an algorithm for azimuth correlation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data with extraordinarily large-range migration which cannot be accommodated by the existing frequency domain interpolation approach used in current Seasat SAR processing. A mathematical model is provided for the SAR range-correlated point-target response both in the spatial and frequency domains. A simple and efficient processing algorithm derived from the exact two-dimensional correlation algorithm is given. This algorithm enables azimuth correlation by two cascaded one-dimensional correlation steps. The first step is to transform the range-correlated SAR data into the frequency domain in azimuth, followed by a newly developed range convolution filter to correct the range-dispersed spectrum of the range-correlated point-target response (RCPTR). The second step is the frequency-domain range migration correction approach for the azimuth compression. Simulation results provided here indicate that this processing algorithm yields a satisfactory compressed impulse response for SAR data with large-range migration whereas previous methods were subject to a broadening of the impulse response along range.
