Unraveling the origin of antiferromagnetic coupling at YIG/permalloy interface

We investigate the structural and electronic origin of antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling in the yttrium iron garnet (YIG) and permalloy (Ni 80 ⁢Fe 20 , Py) bilayer system at the atomic level. Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra reveal unique hybrid modes in samples prepared with surface ion milling, indicative of antiferromagnetic exchange coupling at the YIG/Py interface. Using atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), we found that AFM coupling appears at the YIG/Py interface of the tetrahedral YIG surface formed with ion milling. Here, the STEM measurements suggest that the interfacial AFM coupling is predominantly driven by an oxygen-mediated superexchange coupling mechanism, which is confirmed by the density-functional theory (DFT) calculations to be energetically favorable. Thus, the combined experimental and theoretical results reveal the critical role of interfacial atomic structure in determining the type of magnetic coupling in a YIG/ferromagnet heterostructure, and prove that the interfacial structure can be experimentally tuned by surface ion milling.

Influence of temperature, doping, and amorphization on the electronic structure and magnetic damping of iron

Hybrid magnonic quantum systems have drawn increased attention in recent years for coherent quantum information processing, but too large magnetic damping is a persistent concern when metallic magnets are used. Their intrinsic damping is largely determined by electron-magnon scattering induced by spin-orbit interactions. In the low scattering limit, damping is dominated by intra-band electronic transitions, which has been theoretically shown to be proportional to the electronic density of states at the Fermi level. In this work, we focus on body-centered-cubic iron as a paradigmatic ferromagnetic material. We comprehensively study its electronic structure using first-principles density functional theory simulations and account for finite lattice temperature, boron (B) doping, and structure amorphization. Our results indicate that temperature induced atomic disorder and amorphous atomic geometries only have a minor influence. Instead, boron doping noticeably decreases the density of states near the Fermi level with an optimal doping level of 6.25%. In addition, we show that this reduction varies significantly for different atomic geometries and report that the highest reduction correlates with a large magnetization of the material. Furthermore, this may suggest materials growth under external magnetic fields as a route to explore in experiment.

Ambient-Frequency-Data Based System-Level Inertia Estimation Using Physical Equation and its Practice on Hawaii Islands

Here, in this paper, a practical ambient-frequency-data-based inertia estimation method using a physical equation is proposed and validated by real measurement data from Hawaii island grids. With high renewable penetration, accurate inertia estimation is important and urgent. Ambient frequency oscillation always exists in power grids, so the proposed method has advantages of real-time inertia estimation and no need for additional disturbances. This paper first developed the physical equation for inertia estimation to offer a clear mechanism for easy implementation in practice. To apply the proposed method in actual grids, a practical method to extract the ambient frequency oscillation from frequency measurement is further proposed. The inertia estimation using the physical equation is validated by KIUC simulation data and HECO field data, in which error rates are around 2% and 8%, respectively. Practical inertia estimation is challenging due to the large amounts of resources contributing to the power grid's effective inertia, but the method provided in this paper can offer a novel way for practical inertia estimation, which can help renewable penetration to boost carbon-free grid.

Real-Time Inertia Estimation Tool Implementation Based on Probing Signals

As renewable energy penetration increases and the traditional generators retire in power grids, system inertia decreases and exhibits significant daily fluctuations. Furthermore, fast frequency responses (FFRs) provided by the inverter-based resources (IBRs) begin to playa very critical role and bring new challenges to real-time system inertia monitoring due to the difficulties of quantifying its artificial inertia contribution. Thus, necessitating an accurate real-time inertia estimation tool will not only benefit the secure power grid operations, but also provide insights on assessing the artificial inertia contribution from the IBRs. This paper presents a probing-based real-time inertia estimation tool that has been validated through a power-hardware-in-the-Ioop (PHIL) test system using identical hardware battery energy storage system (BESS) and control in an actual power grid. Preliminary results indicate high estimation accuracy of the developed tool and pave the way for the field test and deployment.

Early Alarm: Robust Event Analysis for Power Systems using 1-D Fully Convolutional Network

This work presents a novel deep learning model for early, accurate, and robust detection, recognition, and temporal localization of multi-type events in large-scale power systems. The proposed method develops a unified 1-D fully convolutional network (FCN) model that takes time series of raw frequency signals measured from a power system as input, extracts distinguishing features, and predicts at every temporal point in the time series if an event is happening and what the type of the event is. Compared to existing methods, the proposed model eliminates the necessity for hand-crafted feature extraction or complicated data pre-processing, can flexibly handle input signals of arbitrary length, and precisely infer the event occurrence time. Most importantly, the model is intentionally trained with incomplete patterns, such that it is more robust to partial features of an event which is common in real-world online recognition, resulting in early alarm for power system failures. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves superior performance to the state-of-the-art, and also shows strong robustness to noise and system oscillations.

Grid Strength Assessment for High Levels of Inverter-based Resources in the Puerto Rico Power

A system-wide assessment of the Puerto Rico power system grid strength is studied when considering high levels of inverter-based resource penetration. This study is carried out in PSSE and assesses the impact of inverter-based resource (IBR) contributions in response to three-phase ground faults. A hypothetical 100% inverter-based generation scenario is created to assess the extreme impact on short circuit levels and a realistic scenario is considered to assess the impact to short circuit ratios. The overall conclusion is that short circuit capacity and current will drastically decrease in a high IBR scenario, an effect that is quantified in this paper. The short circuit ratio metric is typically used to assess the impact of IBR but generally overestimates grid strength due to not accounting for the impact from multiple IBRs. Other methods such as equivalent circuit based short circuit ratio and weighted short circuit ratio offer a more comprehensive consideration for multiple IBRs and can better account for their mutual interactions. The work presented in this paper is part of the PR100 study.

Integrating magnons for quantum information

Magnons, the quanta of collective spin excitations in magnetically ordered materials, have distinct properties that make them uniquely appealing for quantum information applications. They can have ultra-small wavelengths down to the nanometer scale even at microwave frequencies. Here, they can provide coupling to a diverse set of other quantum excitations, and their inherently gyrotropic dynamics forms the basis for pronounced nonreciprocities. In this article, we discuss what the current research challenges are for integrating magnetic materials into quantum information systems and provide a perspective on how to address them.

Probing-Based Inertia Estimation Method Using Hybrid Power Plants

With the displacement of synchronous generation by inverter-based resources (IBRs), power systems could face the challenge of reduced inertia since IBRs do not inherently contribute to system inertia. Therefore, there is rising interest in monitoring system inertia in real-time applications for situational awareness. In addition, there is a growing number of IBRs that provide fast frequency responses (FFR) in the form of synthetic inertia and P-f droop. It is desirable to quantify the contribution of these FFR controls as equivalent inertia. This paper proposes a probing-based inertia estimation method using a PV-battery hybrid power plant in the Kauai island power system. The method is validated under different operating conditions.
