A soil-inspired dynamically responsive chemical system for microbial modulation

Interactions between the microbiota and their colonized environments mediate critical pathways from biogeochemical cycles to homeostasis in human health. Here, in this study, we report a soil-inspired chemical system that consists of nanostructured minerals, starch granules and liquid metals. Fabricated via a bottom-up synthesis, the soil-inspired chemical system can enable chemical redistribution and modulation of microbial communities. We characterize the composite, confirming its structural similarity to the soil, with three-dimensional X-ray fluorescence and ptychographic tomography and electron microscopy imaging. We also demonstrate that post-synthetic modifications formed by laser irradiation led to chemical heterogeneities from the atomic to the macroscopic level. The soil-inspired material possesses chemical, optical and mechanical responsiveness to yield write-erase functions in electrical performance. The composite can also enhance microbial culture/biofilm growth and biofuel production in vitro. Finally, we show that the soil-inspired system enriches gut bacteria diversity, rectifies tetracycline-induced gut microbiome dysbiosis and ameliorates dextran sulfate sodium-induced rodent colitis symptoms within in vivo rodent models.

Conformal PEDOT Coating Enables Ultra-High-Voltage and High-Temperature Operation for Single-Crystal Ni-Rich Cathodes

Single-crystal Ni-rich Li[Ni x Mn y Co 1-x-y ]O 2 (SC-NMC) cathodes represent a promising approach to mitigate the cracking issue of conventional polycrystalline cathodes. However, many reported SC-NMC cathodes still suffer from unsatisfactory cycling stability, particularly under high charge cutoff voltage and/or elevated temperature. Herein, we report an ultraconformal and durable poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) coating for SC-NMC cathodes using an oxidative chemical vapor deposition (oCVD) technique, which significantly improves their high-voltage (4.6 V) and high-temperature operation resiliency. The PEDOT coated SC LiNi 0.83 Mn 0.1 Co 0.07 O 2 (SC-NMC83) delivers an impressive capacity retention rate of 96.7% and 89.5% after 100 and 200 cycles, respectively. Significantly, even after calendar aging at 45 degrees C and 4.6 V, the coated cathode can still retain 85.3% (in comparison with 59.6% for the bare one) of the initial capacity after 100 cycles at a 0.5 C rate. Synchrotron X-ray experiments and interface characterization collectively reveal that the conformal PEDOT coating not only effectively stabilizes the crystallographic structure and maintains the integrity of the particles but also significantly suppresses the electrolyte's corrosion, resulting in improved electrochemical/thermal stability. Our findings highlight the promise of an oCVD PEDOT coating for single-crystal Ni-rich cathodes to meet the grand challenge of high-energy batteries under extreme conditions.

A tandem radiative/evaporative cooler for weather-insensitive and high-performance daytime passive cooling

Radiative cooling and evaporative cooling with low carbon footprint are regarded as promising passive cooling strategies. However, the intrinsic limits of continuous water supply with complex systems for evaporative cooling, and restricted cooling power as well as the strict requirement of weather conditions for radiative cooling, hinder the scale of their practical applications. Here, we propose a tandem passive cooler composed of bilayer polymer that enables dual-functional passive cooling of radiation and evaporation. Specifically, the high reflectivity to sunlight and mid-infrared emissivity of this polymer film allows excellent radiative cooling performance, and its good atmospheric water harvesting property of underlayer ensures self-supply of water and high evaporative cooling power. Consequently, this tandem passive cooler overcomes the fundamental difficulties of radiative cooling and evaporative cooling and shows the applicability under various conditions of weather/climate. It is expected that this design can expand the practical application domain of passive cooling.

Real-time 3D analysis during electron tomography using tomviz

The demand for high-throughput electron tomography is rapidly increasing in biological and material sciences. However, this 3D imaging technique is computationally bottlenecked by alignment and reconstruction which runs from hours to days. We demonstrate real-time tomography with dynamic 3D tomographic visualization to enable rapid interpretation of specimen structure immediately as data is collected on an electron microscope. Using geometrically complex chiral nanoparticles, we show volumetric interpretation can begin in less than 10 minutes and a high-quality tomogram is available within 30 minutes. Real-time tomography is integrated into tomviz, an open-source and cross-platform 3D data analysis tool that contains intuitive graphical user interfaces (GUI), to enable any scientist to characterize biological and material structure in 3D.

Automatic parameter selection for electron ptychography via Bayesian optimization

Abstract Electron ptychography provides new opportunities to resolve atomic structures with deep sub-angstrom spatial resolution and to study electron-beam sensitive materials with high dose efficiency. In practice, obtaining accurate ptychography images requires simultaneously optimizing multiple parameters that are often selected based on trial-and-error, resulting in low-throughput experiments and preventing wider adoption. Here, we develop an automatic parameter selection framework to circumvent this problem using Bayesian optimization with Gaussian processes. With minimal prior knowledge, the workflow efficiently produces ptychographic reconstructions that are superior to those processed by experienced experts. The method also facilitates better experimental designs by exploring optimized experimental parameters from simulated data.

High-resolution ptychographic imaging enabled by high-speed multi-pass scanning

As a coherent diffraction imaging technique, ptychography provides high-spatial resolution beyond Rayleigh’s criterion of the focusing optics, but it is also sensitively affected by the decoherence coming from the spatial and temporal variations in the experiment. Here we show that high-speed ptychographic data acquisition with short exposure can effectively reduce the impact from experimental variations. To reach a cumulative dose required for a given resolution, we further demonstrate that a continuous multi-pass scan via high-speed ptychography can achieve high-resolution imaging. This low-dose scan strategy is shown to be more dose-efficient, and has potential for radiation-sensitive sample studies and time-resolved imaging.

Imaging atomic-scale chemistry from fused multi-modal electron microscopy

Efforts to map atomic-scale chemistry at low doses with minimal noise using electron microscopes are fundamentally limited by inelastic interactions. Here, fused multi-modal electron microscopy offers high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) recovery of material chemistry at nano- and atomic-resolution by coupling correlated information encoded within both elastic scattering (high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF)) and inelastic spectroscopic signals (electron energy loss (EELS) or energy-dispersive x-ray (EDX)). By linking these simultaneously acquired signals, or modalities, the chemical distribution within nanomaterials can be imaged at significantly lower doses with existing detector hardware. In many cases, the dose requirements can be reduced by over one order of magnitude. This high SNR recovery of chemistry is tested against simulated and experimental atomic resolution data of heterogeneous nanomaterials.

Achieving high spatial resolution in a large field-of-view using lensless x-ray imaging

X-ray ptychography, a powerful scanning lensless imaging technique, has become attractive for nondestructively imaging internal structures at nanoscale. Stage positioning overhead in conventional step-scan ptychography is one of the limiting factors on the imaging throughput. In this work, we demonstrate the use of advanced fly scan ptychography to achieve high-resolution ptychograms of modern integrated circuits on a large field-of-view at millimeter scale. By completely removing stage overheads between scan points, the imaging time for millimeter-size sample can be significantly reduced. Furthermore, we implement the orthogonal probe relaxation technique to overcome the variation of illumination across the large scan area as well as local vibrations. The capability of x-ray ptychography shown here is broadly applicable for various studies, which requires both high spatial resolution and large scan area.

Electron ptychography achieves atomic-resolution limits set by lattice vibrations

Transmission electron microscopes use electrons with wavelengths of a few picometers, potentially capable of imaging individual atoms in solids at a resolution ultimately set by the intrinsic size of an atom. However, owing to lens aberrations and multiple scattering of electrons in the sample, the image resolution is reduced by a factor of 3 to 10. By inversely solving the multiple scattering problem and overcoming the electron-probe aberrations using electron ptychography, we demonstrate an instrumental blurring of less than 20 picometers and a linear phase response in thick samples. The measured widths of atomic columns are limited by thermal fluctuations of the atoms. As a result, our method is also capable of locating embedded atomic dopant atoms in all three dimensions with subnanometer precision from only a single projection measurement.

Broadband X-ray ptychography using multi-wavelength algorithm

Ptychography is a rapidly developing scanning microscopy which is able to view the internal structures of samples at a high resolution beyond the illumination size. The achieved spatial resolution is theoretically dose-limited. A broadband source can provide much higher flux compared with a monochromatic source; however, it conflicts with the necessary coherence requirements of this coherent diffraction imaging technique. In this paper, a multi-wavelength reconstruction algorithm has been developed to deal with the broad bandwidth in ptychography. Compared with the latest development of mixed-state reconstruction approach, this multi-wavelength approach is more accurate in the physical model, and also considers the spot size variation as a function of energy due to the chromatic focusing optics. Therefore, this method has been proved in both simulation and experiment to significantly improve the reconstruction when the source bandwidth, illumination size and scan step size increase. It is worth mentioning that the accurate and detailed information of the energy spectrum for the incident beam is not required in advance for the proposed method. Further, we combine multi-wavelength and mixed-state approaches to jointly solve temporal and spatial partial coherence in ptychography so that it can handle various disadvantageous experimental effects. The significant relaxation in coherence requirements by our approaches allows the use of high-flux broadband X-ray sources for high-efficient and high-resolution ptychographic imaging.

Multi-beam X-ray ptychography for high-throughput coherent diffraction imaging

X-ray ptychography is a rapidly developing coherent diffraction imaging technique that provides nanoscale resolution on extended field-of-view. However, the requirement of coherence and the scanning mechanism limit the throughput of ptychographic imaging. Herein, we propose X-ray ptychography using multiple illuminations instead of single illumination in conventional ptychography. Multiple locations of the sample are simultaneously imaged by spatially separated X-ray beams, therefore, the obtained field-of-view in one scan can be enlarged by a factor equal to the number of illuminations. We have demonstrated this technique experimentally using two X-ray beams focused by a house-made Fresnel zone plate array. Two areas of the object and corresponding double illuminations were successfully reconstructed from diffraction patterns acquired in one scan, with image quality similar with those obtained by conventional single-beam ptychography in sequence. Multi-beam ptychography approach increases the imaging speed, providing an efficient way for high-resolution imaging of large extended specimens.

Dynamic compressed sensing for real-time tomographic reconstruction

Electron tomography has achieved higher resolution and quality at reduced doses with recent advances in compressed sensing. Compressed sensing (CS) exploits the inherent sparse signal structure to efficiently reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) volumes at the nanoscale from undersampled measurements. However, the process bottlenecks 3D reconstruction with computation times that run from hours to days. Here we demonstrate a framework for dynamic compressed sensing that produces a 3D specimen structure that updates in real-time as new specimen projections are collected. Researchers can begin interpreting 3D specimens as data is collected to facilitate high-throughput and interactive analysis. Using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), we show that dynamic compressed sensing accelerates the convergence speed by ~3-fold while also reducing its error by 27% for a Au/SrTiO 3 nanoparticle specimen. Before a tomography experiment is completed, the 3D tomogram has interpretable structure within ~33% of completion and fine details are visible as early as ~66%. Upon completion of an experiment, a high-fidelity 3D visualization is produced without further delay. Additionally, we report reconstruction parameters that tune data fidelity can be manipulated throughout the computation without re-running the entire process.
