A global database of soil microbial phospholipid fatty acids and enzyme activities

Abstract Soil microbes drive ecosystem function and play a critical role in how ecosystems respond to global change. Research surrounding soil microbial communities has rapidly increased in recent decades, and substantial data relating to phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) and potential enzyme activity have been collected and analysed. However, studies have mostly been restricted to local and regional scales, and their accuracy and usefulness are limited by the extent of accessible data. Here we aim to improve data availability by collating a global database of soil PLFA and potential enzyme activity measurements from 12,258 georeferenced samples located across all continents, 5.1% of which have not previously been published. The database contains data relating to 113 PLFAs and 26 enzyme activities, and includes metadata such as sampling date, sample depth, and soil pH, total carbon, and total nitrogen. This database will help researchers in conducting both global- and local-scale studies to better understand soil microbial biomass and function.

Magnetic Field-Stabilized Wigner Crystal States in a Graphene Moiré Superlattice

ABC-stacked trilayer graphene on boron nitride (ABC-TLG/hBN) moiré superlattices provides a tunable platform for exploring Wigner crystal states in which the electron correlation can be controlled by electric and magnetic fields. Here, in this work, we report the observation of magnetic field-stabilized Wigner crystal states in a ABC-TLG/hBN. We show that correlated insulating states emerge at multiple fractional and integer fillings corresponding to ν = 1/3, 2/3, 1, 4/3, 5/3, and 2 electrons per moiré lattice site under a magnetic field. These correlated insulating states can be attributed to generalized Mott states for the integer fillings and generalized Wigner crystal states for the fractional fillings. The generalized Wigner crystal states are stabilized by a vertical magnetic field and are strongest at one magnetic flux quantum per three moiré superlattices. The ν = 2 insulating state persists up to 30 T, which can be described by a Mott–Hofstadter transition at a high magnetic field.

Spectroscopy signatures of electron correlations in a trilayer graphene/hBN moiré superlattice

ABC-stacked trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride moiré superlattice (TLG/hBN) has emerged as a playground for correlated electron physics. Here, we report spectroscopy measurements of dual-gated TLG/hBN using Fourier transform infrared photocurrent spectroscopy. We observed a strong optical transition between moiré minibands that narrows continuously as a bandgap is opened by gating, indicating a reduction of the single-particle bandwidth. At half-filling of the valence flat band, a broad absorption peak emerges at ~18 milli–electron volts, indicating direct optical excitation across an emerging Mott gap. Similar photocurrent spectra are observed in two other correlated insulating states at quarter- and half-filling of the first conduction band. Our findings provide key parameters of the Hubbard model for the understanding of electron correlation in TLG/hBN.

Tunable Orbital Ferromagnetism at Noninteger Filling of a Moiré Superlattice

Here, the flat bands resulting from moiré superlattices exhibit fascinating correlated electron phenomena such as correlated insulators, ( Nature 2018, 556 (7699), 80–84), ( Nature Physics 2019, 15 (3), 237) superconductivity, ( Nature 2018, 556 (7699), 43–50), ( Nature 2019, 572 (7768), 215–219) and orbital magnetism. ( Science 2019, 365 (6453), 605–608), ( Nature 2020, 579 (7797), 56–61), ( Science 2020, 367 (6480), 900–903) Such magnetism has been observed only at particular integer multiples of n 0 , the density corresponding to one electron per moiré superlattice unit cell. Here, we report the experimental observation of ferromagnetism at noninteger filling (NIF) of a flat Chern band in a ABC-TLG/hBN moiré superlattice. This state exhibits prominent ferromagnetic hysteresis behavior with large anomalous Hall resistivity in a broad region of densities centered in the valence miniband at n = -2.3n 0 . We observe that, not only the magnitude of the anomalous Hall signal, but also the sign of the hysteretic ferromagnetic response can be modulated by tuning the carrier density and displacement field. Rotating the sample in a fixed magnetic field demonstrates that the ferromagnetism is highly anisotropic and likely purely orbital in character.

Gate-tunable plasmons in mixed-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures

Abstract Surface plasmons, collective electromagnetic excitations coupled to conduction electron oscillations, enable the manipulation of light–matter interactions at the nanoscale. Plasmon dispersion of metallic structures depends sensitively on their dimensionality and has been intensively studied for fundamental physics as well as applied technologies. Here, we report possible evidence for gate-tunable hybrid plasmons from the dimensionally mixed coupling between one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotubes and two-dimensional (2D) graphene. In contrast to the carrier density-independent 1D Luttinger liquid plasmons in bare metallic carbon nanotubes, plasmon wavelengths in the 1D-2D heterostructure are modulated by 75% via electrostatic gating while retaining the high figures of merit of 1D plasmons. We propose a theoretical model to describe the electromagnetic interaction between plasmons in nanotubes and graphene, suggesting plasmon hybridization as a possible origin for the observed large plasmon modulation. The mixed-dimensional plasmonic heterostructures may enable diverse designs of tunable plasmonic nanodevices.

Electronically Coupled 2D Polymer/MoS 2 Heterostructures

Emergent quantum phenomena in electronically coupled two-dimensional heterostructures are central to next-generation optical, electronic, and quantum information applications. Tailoring electronic band gaps in coupled heterostructures would permit control of such phenomena and is the subject of significant research interest. Two-dimensional polymers (2DPs) offer a compelling route to tailored band structures through the selection of molecular constituents. However, despite the promise of synthetic flexibility and electronic design, fabrication of 2DPs that form electronically coupled 2D heterostructures remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we report the rational design and optimized synthesis of electronically coupled semiconducting 2DP/2D transition metal dichalcogenide van der Waals heterostructures, demonstrate direct exfoliation of the highly crystalline and oriented 2DP films down to a few nanometers, and present the first thickness-dependent study of 2DP/MoS 2 heterostructures. In this work, control over the 2DP layers reveals enhancement of the 2DP photoluminescence by two orders of magnitude in ultrathin sheets and an unexpected thickness-dependent modulation of the ultrafast excited state dynamics in the 2DP/MoS 2 heterostructure. These results provide fundamental insight into the electronic structure of 2DPs and present a route to tune emergent quantum phenomena in 2DP hybrid van der Waals heterostructures.
