Predicting Gate Conflicts at Charlotte Douglas International Airport Using NASA ATD-2 Fused Data Sources

NASA is conducting the Airspace Technology Demonstration-2 to evaluate an Integrated Arrival, Departure, and Surface (IADS) traffic management system. The IADS system is powered by real-time System Wide Information Management feeds which provide an accurate and high fidelity view of the lifecycle of a flight. This data can be leveraged to drive efficiencies in the National Airspace System. For non safety critical applications there is opportunity for third party service providers to offer this type of data-driven prediction service in near real-time. This paper investigates the gate conflict prediction problem as a concrete use case which could help drive efficiencies. We model gate conflicts as a regression problem and describe the iterative process of model building, model validation, and evaluation used to assess the efficacy of our approach. We quantify our predictive accuracy and identify paths for improvement. Through this iterative process we hope to evolve our models and methods to a near real-time prediction service.

Recap of DIP Workshop Series: #1 DIP Architecture and Data Integrations Services

This workshop will cover DIP architecture and data integration services to obtain feedback from America for Airlines (A4A) Air Traffic Management Council (ATMC). Participants will get a look at how the DIP architecture is set-up as well as how data integration services are planned to be hosted on the platform. The DIP architecture review is intended to cover how DIP was envisioned and how DIP is being developed to address data needs across the industry. Participants will have a chance to provide feedback on the DIP architecture and gain insight into how one might interface with the DIP to send or receive data. The data integration services portion is intended to cover DIP’s technical approach to data integration. As an example implementation, there will be a first look at possible data fusion on the platform, including utilizing NASA’s Fuser, and tailoring for industry data consumers. Descriptions, at a high-level, of input to and output of the Fuser will also be discussed.

DIP: Digital Information Platform

The third DIP workshop’s topic is DIP for Flight Operators and Consumers. Participants will receive insight the consumer onboarding process and steps to take to consume from the platform. Showcase demos will be provided covering data integration services, data analytics using ML/AI technologies, and Collaborative Digital Decision Reroute (CDDR) capabilities. More details on service performance metrics will be discussed as well as updates on the technical development plan and schedule. Participants interested in consuming DIP services are highly encouraged to attend this workshop and provide feedback.

Machine Learning Airport Surface Model

Future needs of the National Airspace System require decision support tools to adopt a service-oriented architecture in alignment with the FAA’s vision for an Info-Centric NAS. To achieve this, many existing systems will need to undergo a digital transformation from a monolithic decision support tool to a service-oriented architecture where individual services are exposed through well defined Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). To enable this transformation, NASA has developed the Digital Information Platform as a cloud based foundation for development of aviation services with a special focus towards Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (ML) services. This paper describes the work required for the transformation of NASA’s legacy surface management system to a real-time ML based decision support system deployed in the cloud. Details of the Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) infrastructure and best practices are described which enabled the end-toend lifecycle management of ML within an integrated software system. Validation results are provided from an operational field evaluation where performance was benchmarked against the legacy approach.

Towards Sustainable Aviation With Efficient Airspace Operations

In November 2021, the Federal Aviation Administration published the United States Aviation Climate Action Plan to accelerate innovation across the U.S. aviation ecosystem. In response, NASA has established the Sustainable Flight National Partnership to engage with industry, academia, and other agencies to accomplish net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. As part of the SFNP Mission, NASA is conducting a series of real world operational demonstrations in the current National Airspace System with a focus on delivering real world sustainability benefits. This paper presents the current work and future plan for the SFNP Ops Demo Series and describes the cloud based infrastructure used for virtual deployment of decision support tools to flight operators and Air Traffic Controllers to help improve operational efficiency of the National Airspace System. Validation results are shared along with the key sustainability benefits such as jet fuel savings and reduction in CO2 emissions. The operational efficiency metrics such as delay savings are also reported.
