C4H2, HC3N and C2N2 in Titan's atmosphere

Voyager 1 took IR measurements of the atmosphere of Titan, and obtained an average of 346 spectra, mostly from the center of the disk. The compounds C4H2, HC3N, and C2N2 were detected in the atmosphere of Titan. The identification of two compounds containing nitrogen, in addition to HCN, provides further evidence for the abundance of free N2 on Titan. The organic compounds observed in the atmosphere of Titan are summarized in a table, which also indicates the approximate mole fraction for each compound identified previously. The observed compounds originate by reactions of methane and nitrogen radicals in a predominantly nitrogen atmosphere.

Anomalous C-12H4:C-13H4 strengths in 3 ny sub 3

The C-12:C-13 ratios in the atmospheres of the outer planets are important parameters with which to test models for isotope formation and fractionation during the early history of the solar system, yielding insight into processes occurring in the primitive solar nebula. The 3 ny sub 3 spectra of methane were obtained using the Kitt Peak Solar Fourier Transform Spectrometer and a 6 m White cell. The experimental results are summarized in a table. The strength ratios for the R-branch of 3 ny sub 3 exhibit strong anomalies, with C-13H4 lines consistently weaker than their C-12H4 counterparts. The C-12:C-13 abundance ratios for the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn have been redetermined using the 3 ny sub 3 line-strength ratios measured.

Optical calibrator for TDL spectrometers

Two etalons and monochromator mode selector help calibrate spectrometer in selected laser mode. Technique accurately determines free spectral range of etalon. By establishing number of fringes between two modes, both of which have been calibrated with molecular line standards, one finds free spectral range with error inversely proportional to spectral interval between calibration points. Procedure establishes free spectral range of etalon without prior knowledge of its length or refractive index.

Absolute line strengths in nu4, /C-12/H4 - A dual-beam diode laser spectrometer with sweep integration

A tunable diode laser spectrometer with several unique features has been developed for use in the middle IR. The all-reflective optical system has a dual-beam configuration before the dispersive mode selector to eliminate transit-angle errors at the calibration etalon. By maintaining separated beams through the mode selector, beam combiner losses are avoided. Averaging successive sweeps of the current-modulated laser permits stable reproducible spectral integrations, eliminating etalon thermal errors and producing high photometric sensitivity. Line strengths have been measured using this instrument for eleven transitions in nu4 of (C-12)H4. These include R0 and R1 and nine P-branch transitions in the 1202-1263-per cm range. Techniques for measuring strengths with a diode laser are discussed.

Development and performance of a laser heterodyne spectrometer using tunable semiconductor lasers as local oscillators

A diode laser based IR heterodyne spectrometer for laboratory and field use was developed for high efficiency operation between 7.5 and 8.5 microns. The local oscillator is a PbSSe tunable diode laser kept continuously at operating temperatures of 12-60 K using a closed cycle cooler. The laser output frequency is controlled and stabilized using a high precision diode current supply, constant temperature controller, and a shock isolator mounted between the refrigerator cold tip and the diode mount. Single laser modes are selected by a grating placed in the local oscillator beam. The system employs reflecting optics throughout to minimize losses from internal reflection and absorption, and to eliminate chromatic effects. Spectral analysis of the diode laser output between 0 and 1 GHz reveals excess noise at many diode current settings, which limits the infrared spectral regions over which useful heterodyne operation can be achieved. System performance has been studied by making heterodyne measurements of etalon fringes and several Freon 13 (CF3Cl) absorption lines against a laboratory blackbody source. Preliminary field tests have also been performed using the Sun as a source.

Anomalous /C-13/H4:/C-12/H4 line strengths in 2 nu 3

Anomalous intensity ratios between 2 nu 3 singlet lines of C-13 methane and C-12 methane are reported. Absolute strengths of the Q1, R0 and R1 singlets were measured for essentially pure samples of (C-13)H4 and (C-12)H4 at a resolution of 0.035 kaysers at pressures of 10 and 20 Torr, using a computer controlled grating spectrometer. Line strength ratios between the isotopic species are presented which demonstrate a dramatic effect of isotopic substitution on line strengths. If this effect can be observed in the 3 nu 3 vibration-rotation band of methane, which is widely used in planetary atmosphere studies, revision of the (C-12)H4/(C-13)H4 abundance ratios of the outer planets will be necessary.

Intermode calibration of diode-laser spectra using tandem etalons

The paper deals with an approach which can improve the accuracy of etalon calibration of tunable diode-laser (TDL) spectra in the IR and extend absolute calibration among several isolated modes. Two etalons placed in the laser beam produce a combined fringe pattern that, with the aid of a monochromator mode selector, can be used to establish the number of fringes between any two spectral points separated by a large frequency interval. This technique has been applied to several similar cases for calibration of isolated modes or verification of the identity of lines of known frequency.

Shock isolator for operating a diode laser on a closed-cycle refrigerator

A diode laser mounted within a helium refrigerator is mounted using a braided copper ground strap which provides good impact shock isolation from the refrigerator cold-tip while also providing a good thermal link to the cold-tip. The diode mount also contains a rigid stand-off assembly consisting of alternate sections of nylon and copper which serve as cold stations to improve thermal isolation from the vaccum housing mounting structure. Included in the mount is a Pb-In alloy wafer inserted between the cold-tip and the diode to damp temperature fluctuations occurring at the cold-tip.

Thermal compensator for closed-cycle helium refrigerator

The wave length of an infrared, semiconductor laser diode having an output frequency that is dependent on the diode temperature is maintained substantially constant by maintaining the diode temperature constant. The diode is carried by a cold tip of a closed cycle helium refrigerator. The refrigerator has a tendency to cause the temperature of the cold tip to oscillate. A heater diode and a sensor diode are placed on a thermal heat sink that is the only highly conductive thermal path between the laser diode and the cold tip. The heat sink has a small volume and low thermal capacitance so that the sensing diode is at substantially the same temperature as the heater diode and substantially no thermal lag exists between them. The sensor diode is connected in a negative feedback circuit with the heater diode so that the tendency of the laser diode to thermally oscillate is virtually eliminated.

Two new methanol transitions in Orion A

Emission from the 11(1) - 10(2) (A-) and 5(0) - 4(1) (E) transitions of CH3OH at rest frequencies of 76,247.4 and 76,509.9 MHz, respectively, has been detected toward Orion A. The velocity widths of the two transitions are estimated to be approximately 3 km/s, which is consistent with other methanol lines in Orion. It is noted that the 117.5-kayser upper-state energy of the 11(1) - 10(2) (A-) transition is the highest yet reported for methanol in any source. The observed intensity is shown to be consistent with the 90-K thermal excitation model that seems to be appropriate for all other reported CH3OH lines in Orion A. Total column densities of 3 x 10 to the 16th per sq cm for the 11(1) - 10(2) (A-) transition and of 2 x 10 to the 16th per sq cm for the 5(0) - 4(1) (E) transition are calculated.

Methane detected in Orion A

This letter reports the detection of line emission from the Orion Molecular Cloud corresponding to six distinct pure-rotational delta J = 0 transitions in CH4. The transitions observed and the transition frequencies are: J = 11 E(2) - E(1), 4600.359 MHz; J = 18 F1(4) - F2(1), 76,231.45 MHz; J = 18 A1(2) - A2(1), 76,700.02 MHz; J = 19 F1(4) - F2(1), 75,944.99 MHz; J = 19 F2(4) - F1(1), 78,233.59 MHz; and J = 20 F2(5) - F1(2), 82,873.59 MHz. The observed spectra at the six transition frequencies are plotted, and all but two of the methane lines are found to be very narrow (about 2 km/s). It is noted that the small velocity widths of the four weaker lines and an observed variability of the J = 18 A line are classic characteristics of a maser and that the excitation appears to be nonthermal. An effective excitation temperature of 1100 to 2100 K is estimated for the methane in Orion A.
