Dirac Nodal Line in Hourglass Semimetal Nb 3 SiTe 6

Glide-mirror symmetry in nonsymmorphic crystals can foster the emergence of novel hourglass nodal loop states. Here, we present spectroscopic signatures from angle-resolved photoemission of a predicted topological hourglass semimetal phase in Nb 3 SiTe 6 . Linear band crossings are observed at the zone boundary of Nb 3 SiTe 6 , which could be the origin of the nontrivial Berry phase and are consistent with a predicted glide quantum spin Hall effect; such linear band crossings connect to form a nodal loop. Furthermore, the saddle-like Fermi surface of Nb 3 SiTe 6 observed in our results helps unveil linear band crossings that could be missed. Additionally, in situ alkali-metal doping of Nb 3 SiTe 6 also facilitated the observation of other band crossings and parabolic bands at the zone center correlated with accidental nodal loop states. Overall, our results complete the system's band structure, help explain prior Hall measurements, and suggest the existence of a nodal loop at the zone center of Nb 3 SiTe 6 .

The magnetic order in multiferroic DyMnO 3

We report that with flexibility in tuning their electric and magnetic properties, multiferroics can be used in information exchange and storage in ways that are very different from the present electronic materials. Here we use resonant soft X-ray scattering spectroscopy to study the F-type (0,τ,0) and C-type (0, 1–2τ, 0) diffraction peaks from sinusoidal antiferromagnetic spin order in multiferroic DyMnO 3 . By comparing the temperature dependence of ordering wave vectors τ, peak intensities I, and correlation lengths λ measured at Mn L 2 - , O K-, and Dy M 5 -edges, we show that the nearly perfect locking between the ordering wave vectors from Dy 4f states and Mn 3d orbitals manifesting the second harmonic diffraction peak implies the notable orbital involvement in the coupling between Mn and Dy spins. Our DFT calculations further suggest that the lattice response to different antiferromagnetic ground states (A-type versus E-type) is much weaker in TbMnO 3 , in agreement with previous claim that the symmetric exchange interaction can be an important factor for understanding the ferroelectricity in DyMnO 3 than in TbMnO 3 .

Magnetic and noncentrosymmetric Weyl fermion semimetals in the R AlGe family of compounds ( R = rare earth )

Weyl semimetals are novel topological conductors that host Weyl fermions as emergent quasiparticles. In this Rapid Communication, we propose a new type of Weyl semimetal state that breaks both time-reversal symmetry and inversion symmetry in the RAlGe (R = rare - earth) family. Compared to previous predictions of magnetic Weyl semimetal candidates, the prediction of Weyl nodes in RAlGe is more robust and less dependent on the details of the magnetism because the Weyl nodes are generated already by the inversion breaking and the ferromagnetism acts as a simple Zeeman coupling that shifts the Weyl nodes in k space. Moreover, RAlGe offers remarkable tunability, which covers all varieties of Weyl semimetals including type I, type II, inversion breaking, and time-reversal breaking, depending on a suitable choice of the rare-earth elements. As such, the unique noncentrosymmetric and ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal state in RAlGe enables the generation of spin currents.

Nexus fermions in topological symmorphic crystalline metals

Topological metals and semimetals (TMs) have recently drawn significant interest. These materials give rise to condensed matter realizations of many important concepts in high-energy physics, leading to wide-ranging protected properties in transport and spectroscopic experiments. It has been well-established that the known TMs can be classified by the dimensionality of the topologically protected band degeneracies. While Weyl and Dirac semimetals feature zero-dimensional points, the band crossing of nodal-line semimetals forms a one-dimensional closed loop. In this paper, we identify a TM that goes beyond the above paradigms. It shows an exotic configuration of degeneracies without a well-defined dimensionality. Specifically, it consists of 0D nexus with triple-degeneracy that interconnects 1D lines with double-degeneracy. We show that, because of the novel form of band crossing, the new TM cannot be described by the established results that characterize the topology of the Dirac and Weyl nodes. Moreover, triply-degenerate nodes realize emergent fermionic quasiparticles not present in relativistic quantum field theory. We present materials candidates. Thus, our results open the door for realizing new topological phenomena and fermions including transport anomalies and spectroscopic responses in metallic crystals with nontrivial topology beyond the Weyl/Dirac paradigm.

Atomic-Scale Visualization of Quasiparticle Interference on a Type-II Weyl Semimetal Surface

Here we combine quasiparticle interference simulation (theory) and atomic resolution scanning tunneling spectromicroscopy (experiment) to visualize the interference patterns on a type-II Weyl semimetal Mo x W 1-x Te 2 for the first time. Our simulation based on first-principles band topology theoretically reveals the surface electron scattering behavior. We identify the topological Fermi arc states and reveal the scattering properties of the surface states in Mo 0.66 W 0.34 Te 2 . In addition, our result reveals an experimental signature of the topology via the interconnectivity of bulk and surface states, which is essential for understanding the unusual nature of this material.
