Tunnel junctions for multijunction solar cells

Tunnel junctions for multijunction solar cells are provided. According to an aspect of the invention, a tunnel junction includes a first layer including p-type AlGaAs, a second layer including n-type GaAs, wherein the second layer is a quantum well, and a third layer including n-type AlGaAs or n-type lattice matched AlGaInP. The quantum well can be GaAs or AlxGaAs with x being more than about 40%, and lattice matched GaInAsNSb in the Eg range of from about 0.8 to about 1.4 eV.

Mitigating Inter-Job Interference via Process-Level Quality-of-Service

Jobs on most high-performance computing (HPC) systems share the network with other concurrently executing jobs. Network sharing leads to contention that can severely degrade performance. Here we investigate the use of Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms to reduce the negative impacts of network contention. QoS allows users to manage resource sharing between network flows and to provide bandwidth guarantees to specific flows. Our results show that careful use of QoS reduces the impact of network contention for specific jobs, resulting in up to a 40% performance improvement. In some cases, it completely eliminates the impact of contention. It achieves these improvements with limited negative impact to other jobs; any job that experiences performance loss typically degrades less than 5%, and often much less. Our approach can help ensure that HPC machines maintain high levels of throughput as per-node compute power continues to increase faster than network bandwidth.

Evaluating Trade-offs in Potential Exascale Interconnect Technologies

This report details work to study trade-offs in topology and network bandwidth for potential interconnects in the exascale (2021-2022) timeframe. The work was done using multiple interconnect models across two parallel discrete event simulators. Results from each independent simulator are shown and discussed and the areas of agreement and disagreement are explored.

III-V/Si Tandem Cells Utilizing Interdigitated Back Contact Si Cells and Varying Terminal Configurations

Integrating wide-bandgap III-V with Si solar cells has been shown to yield higher efficiencies than Si alone: As also presented at this conference, four-terminal efficiencies exceeding 32% have been attained. In this contribution, independent and electrically connected operation of the subcells in such tandem cells is examined. The optics of the tandem cell change significantly if a conducting interconnect, rather than an insulating glass slide, is required between the subcells. These effects are studied, and optically optimized structures for different types of tandem cell operation are presented. It is found that minimizing reflection at the conductive interface between the two cells while maintaining conductivity is the key challenge faced in such devices.
