Nondestructive evaluation of composite materials by pulsed time domain methods in imbedded optical fibers

The application of fiber-optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) to nondestructive quantitative measurements of distributed internal strain in graphite-epoxy composites, using optical fiber waveguides imbedded between plies, is discussed. The basic OTDR measurement system is described, together with the methods used to imbed optical fibers within composites. Measurement results, system limitations, and the effect of the imbedded fiber on the integrity of the host composite material are considered.

Nondestructive evaluation of composites by optical time domain reflectometry

Results in the measurement of slowly varying mechanical loading functions on composites using optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) in imbedded optical fiber during both simulated manufacture and use are reviewed. First, the basic theoretical and experimental principles of the OTDR system are described. Next, the mechanical system of the composite and the imbedded fiber is analyzed. Results of measurement obtained for various loading functions applied to material specimens are then described and system limitations on spatial resolution, strain amplitude sensitivity, and frequency response are explained in terms of the range and resolution limits of the OTDR system.

Nondestructive evaluation of composites by optical time domain reflectometry in imbedded optical fibers

The use of imbedded optical fibers to obtain dynamic two-dimensional dynamic-strain measurements by optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) in laminated composites is described. The fundamental principles of OTDR are reviewed, and the basic parameters resolution and dynamic range are defined. Results of OTDR measurements on 30-cm square plates of 0/90/90/0-deg graphite epoxy composite with type 1506 optical fibers imbedded in a serpentine pattern between (and parallel to the reinforcing fibers of) the 90-deg plates are presented in graphs and briefly characterized. It is estimated that processing the OTDR data with simple techniques could permit strain detection of the order 0.00001 at sampling rates as high as 1/ms.

Single mode acoustic fiber waveguide

The single mode operation of a clad rod acoustic waveguide is described. Unlike conventional clad optical and acoustic waveguiding structures which use modes confined to a central core surrounded by a cladding, this guide supports neither core nor cladding modes but a single interface wave field on the core-cladding boundary. The propagation of this bound field and the potential improved freedom from spurious responses is discussed.
