State selectivity in core ionization of methane

A clear experimental signature of the population of the lowest triplet state T 1 3 of the methane dication is identified in a photoionization experiment. This state is populated only in valence ionization and is absent when the dication is formed by core ionization followed by Auger-Meitner decay. For valence ionization, the total internal energy of the CH 3 + fragment, formed during the deprotonation of CH 4 2 + , is evaluated. Notably, the distribution of this internal energy peaks at the same value regardless of the initially populated electronic state of CH 4 2 + . We find that excited electronic states of CH 3 + are predominantly populated with significant rovibrational excitation. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Inequalities for frequency-moment sum rules of electron liquids

The relations between the various frequency-moment sum rules of electron liquids, which include even-power moments, are systematically examined by using the Cauchy-Schwarz and Hoelder inequalities. A relation involving the isothermal sound velocity and the kinetic and potential energies is obtained from one of the inequalities in the long-wavelength limit, and is generalized to arbitrary spatial dimensions.

Sum rules and static local-field corrections of electron liquids in two and three dimensions

The dielectric functions of electron liquids which take into account short-range electron-electron correlations via the static local-field corrections are examined in the light of the frequency-moment sum rules. The formation is given for degenerate as well as classical electron liquids in arbitrary (d) spatial dimensions, which is suitable for comparison between the two- and three-dimensional cases. By using the virial equations of state it is shown that such dielectric functions cannot satisfy the compressibility sum rule and the third-frequency-moment sum rule simultaneously. In the degenerate case, the plasmon, single-pair, and multipair contributions to the sum rules are analyzed, and the reason for this incompatibility is discussed.

Ground-state-energy theorem and the virial theorem of a many-particle system in d dimensions

The equivalence of Pauli's ground-state-energy theorem and the virial theorem is demonstrated for a many-particle system interacting with an interparticle potential in d dimensions at zero and finite temperatures. Pauli's theorem has an integral form in which the variable is the coupling constant e-squared, while the virial theorem has a differential form in which the variable has the number density n. The essence of the equivalence proof consists in changing the variable from n to e-squared by noting the dependence of the excess free energy on dimensionless quantities for zero-temperature and classical cases.

Axion emission from neutron stars

It is shown that axion emission from neutron stars is the dominant energy-loss mechanism for a range of values of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry-breaking scale (F) not excluded by previous constraints. This gives the possibility of obtaining a better bound on F from measurements of surface temperature of neutron stars.
