High-Voltage Pulsed Power Generator for Beam Injection Systems

Beam injection systems in hadron colliders require kickers generating ±50 kV peak voltages into a 50 Ω impedance, with peak currents of 1000 A and sub-10 ns rise and fall times. This paper presents a novel high-voltage pulse power generator utilizing a distributed pulser architecture. It combines gallium nitride (GaN) transistors in a Marx topology with an inductive adder, achieving nanosecond-scale switching speeds and high-power efficiency. Compared to other solutions such as based on MOSFETs or fast ionization dynistors, our development offers superior peak and average power performance, reduced system complexity, and enhanced reliability, marking a significant step forward in high-voltage pulse generation for accelerator applications.

Ultralightweight Power System for Human-Portable Linac-Based X-Ray Sources

Industrial human-portable X-ray sources are widely used by security, nuclear safeguard, and defense agencies. However, the employed sources have significant energy, dose, size, weight, and power (SWaP) limitations, greatly affecting their practical application. RF linear accelerators (linacs) can serve as a flexible, reliable, and robust type of X-ray source if they can match the size, weight, cost, and imaging performance requirements of conventional ones. One of the most critical elements affecting these parameters is the high-voltage pulsed power supply system or modulator, which can make the largest contribution to the total weight and dimensions of the accelerator. Here, in this article, we present the design and demonstration results of a novel ultra lightweight power system based on a 24-kV solid-state Marx modulator for a hand-portable 0.15–2.0-MeV Ku -band linac-based X-ray source.

Radioisotope replacement with compact electron linear accelerators

The replacement of radioactive sources with alternative technologies has been identified as a priority by international authorities, due to the risk of accidents and diversion by terrorists for use in Radiological Dispersal Devices. Many of these sources can be replaced with the X-rays produced by electron beams accelerated to MeV energies. However, the size, weight and costs of electron linacs must be significantly reduced to be considered for radioisotope replacement. RadiaBeam Technologies, LLC is developing a series of inexpensive compact electron accelerators in the 1–10 MeV range for radioisotope replacement such as Ir-192, Cs-137 and Co-60 for various applications. The dramatic level of miniaturization and cost-reduction was achieved thanks to the implementation of such innovative technologies as high-frequency magnetrons, split accelerating structure fabrication technology and solid-state Marx modulators. Here, in this paper, we overview RadiaBeam's compact linac developments, discuss the enabling technologies, and report on the current progress.

Engagement opportunities in OECD NEA benchmark development

A myriad of opportunities is available to collaborate via international benchmark exercises and experimental data preservation activities. Many such opportunities abound under the auspices of the Nuclear Science Committee of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA). Key projects and activities of relevance to the development of advanced reactors design include the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP), the International Reactor Physics Experiment Evaluation Project (IRPhEP), the International Assay Data of Spent Nuclear Fuel Database (SFCOMPO), the Shielding Integral Benchmark and Archive Database (SINBAD), and The International Experimental Thermal HYdraulicS Database (TIETHYS), and various cooperative benchmark exercises. Interested participants are encouraged to contact the leadership and secretariat of the various Technical Working Groups and Working Parties to become more engaged. This paper provides a summary of the current benchmark exercises and experimental databases available for international participation.
